    Congrats Chris, you're making this "Fuji Buttons & Settings" series super interesting and easy to comprehend. What's weird is that your info is fundamental to the proper operation of the camera ... how is it possible that Fuji doesn't cover this in a comprehensive product manual?!? The way you 'test' to gather and confirm facts separates you from the rest. You're winning minds and hearts ... please keep going.

    Thanks for showing this i have bene wondering similar things and trying similar things lately. i am not that crazy about the flat look the strong dynamic range setting gives out of camera in LR but have definitely noticed the increased noise. perhaps i will go back to just using the 400% which seems to look more pleasing straight out of cam and less noisy.

    Thanks to that video. I never understood really what that setting should be. Now I know.
    I have an addition to this: If you set DR Priority to Strong and you're in the ISO range of 320 up to 640, the camera stets it automatically to weak (and it switches the whole thing "off" if your ISO setting is below 320). I think that's important to know from the usability side; especially if you have a camera with a physical wheel for the ISO settings. In that case you can set it as preparation and switch it off via ISO.
    Finally, we have to find out what "Auto" really means. My guess is it will use the setting automatically according to the histogram (activate it if there are too dark or too bright areas) and Auto ISO settings together. Higher ISO settings do lose dynamic range, so sometimes it is better to use lower ISO settings over pushing the dynamic range. At least that would sound a bit smart. ;-) But I think that's hard to find out really. It would make sense that Fuji would explain that to the users a bit better. It would be another useful tool if we would know better what it really does "automagically".

  • @longboardfella5306
    @longboardfella5306 3 роки тому +5

    The Auto DR priority sounds useful because Auto dynamic range is limited to 200% as you've previously explained but if Auto DR can dynamic select Strong then that's similar to 400% but with the benefit of allowing camera to select lower floor iso if scene is not high contrast so you should get richer colour. I will experiment with it. I use LR and Topaz Denoise so can live with noise but lower iso preserve richer colour which is decreased if floor is 640or higher. So this sounds a great setting

    • @roachinfest13
      @roachinfest13 3 роки тому

      Surely it won’t make a difference? The RAW should still just be a RAW, the DR settings are just post processing the highlights and shadows of the JPEGs in camera and giving you a preview in the evf.

    • @appleskyTIA
      @appleskyTIA 3 роки тому +4

      @@roachinfest13 take a look at it's old dr video.

    • @HenriPierreChavaz
      @HenriPierreChavaz 3 роки тому

      DR is a trick that make the dial ISO 2 or 4 times the sensor IS0 (BTW this explains why you need to dial at least 320/640 ISO for camera with sensor from the X-Trans III, and why it was 400/800 with older sensors.
      Thus raw files are affected by DR but not how one would naively thinks.

    Very good video and explanation! Keep in mind, the camera meter only knows 18% gray, so it depends on what metering mode and what the meter is looking at. You have to know exactly what your meter is looking at and adjust for middle gray with your exposure. Also note, when you are using your exposure compensation dial (when in the automatic mode), you are not setting it to underexpose or overexpose the image....what you are doing is "correcting for proper exposure" . There are professional photographers that don't understand this. With digital cameras you can just use the histogram and adjust accordingly. Makes us old "Zone System" guys dinosaurs!

    Thank you so much. I finally understand all those DR settings in Fuji camera.
    To sum up, to preserve most highlights, you should shot in RAW and set DR Priority in STRONG, and bring up the shadows in LR/C1 as you wish.
    For jpeg, I would set DR to 400% instead of setting the DR Priority. Yes you will not be able to preserve as many highlights as the DR Priority, but the overall image looks much more contrasty if you use DR for jpeg.

    Very intriguing. Thanks for making it so clear. It is interesting to me ( as a Fuji RAW shooter) how much effort Fuji has place in getting JPEG out of camera that look as a finished product. Does not necessarily appeals to me but I can see its usefulness and I don’t think that other camera companies have put as much effort into their own cameras. I was also intrigued by what happened to the RAW file when using this adjustment (I am not fully sure what happened there with the RAW file). Also the difference between Lightroom and Capture One is mind blowing. Would love to see a further deep dive into that story.

      I shoot RAW+JPEG with some of the FUJI X BLOG presets dialed in on the JPEG... often I find myself chasing the colors and look of the in camera JPEG when I go to edit the RAW file. With the Fuji it's possible to get a very stylized look in camera and often I don't even consider editing the RAW files anymore.

    • @icogicog8287
      @icogicog8287 3 роки тому +1

      Understood. Many way to skin the (poor) cat. I do prefer to do my own RAW edits. On the other hand I love to frame my photos using the Acros plus red so not to be distracted by color. Works very well for landscape photography. The issue I had with doing JPEG/RAW is the amount of data (especially with the GFX 100) that it generates and the number of files to go through. But each one of us has our own style and needs and it is great that Fuji manages to satisfy many

      This! Not used software on a RAW file for a while now as I shoot my Fuji camera RAW+JPEG with custom film simulations, JEPG straight out of the camera now. The RAW is for if I want to go back to the images and apply a different film simulation in Fujifilm X RAW Studio to *EXACTLY* match the camera output.
      I spend time getting what I want while shooting and using whatever film simulation I think would work in that situation, like loading different 35mm film for differing lighting and colour reproduction. I find myself thinking about colour a lot, something that I never really bothered with on my dSLR as I would choose the colour long after the shot when sat in front of a monitor. I now think about where I am going to shoot, the possible light etc., and then "load" the "film" into my Fuji.
      LR was tiresome and I grew bored of photography. I got into the mindset of having RAWs to process and could not then be bothered to post-process them. I enjoyed capturing images but not processing them, hence I now shoot JPEG.
      I've gone from LR user back to being a photographer. I get the itch to shoot because Fujifilm make JPEG so easy and there is instant upload to share with family. Shooting Fuji JPEG custom film simulations gives me the benefits of "film" without the hassle of using film.

    I have noticed that DRP seems to only work well in AF-S mode. If you touched on this, I missed it. Thanks for the thorough review!

    Hi Chris, Thank you for making this video. From my understanding, the DR priority tool have a RAW file to protect more high light and then raise the shadow to display the detail of the low light, so the result is more noise and lost detail in low light, however, the Dynamics Rang setting trend to neutral. Personally speaking prefer to use Dynamics Rang setting only.

    Thank you for the informative piece of information. The thing is if DR-Priority is selected, DR is disabled. Which would be the better option given a moderate to high contrast environment?

    Thanks Chris for your very informative video's. I learn a lot how to use my Fujifilm camera. My X-T5 actually allows DR 400% and D-range Strong settings already from ISO 500 (instead of ISO 640). Maybe Fujifilm lowered the minimum ISO with some firmware update, which is positive. Greetings from NL.

    Very useful as I carry my X-T2 around with me daily and try and shoot to where I can use the jpegs and not rely on the RAW files to have a quick turn around on the images by transferring to my phone, slightly editing then posting online.

    with the release of the new style brushed in capture one 21 im wondering about the selective lifting of shadows in Cap1 vrs the D rangen informing whole image. i would love to see how the end result shadow noise would be post edit! in fact im gonna try it out today! thanks PAL2TECH!
