How Hard is it to Become Delta Force Operator?

  • Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta or ‘Delta Force” remains cloaked equally in official secrecy and popular legend. Becoming a member of this legendary group is no easy task.
Just how much torture is a person willing to undergo to get a prestigious job? Given that an average of 250 resumes are submitted for every job position in the United States, one would assume quite a lot.
But there’s writing endless resumes and then there’s running forty miles at night on an uneven forest trail while lugging a fifty-pound rucksack with more weight added upon achieving each waypoint.
And to even get into the application pool for that particular job, you first have to master the art of willingly jumping out of a perfectly functional airplane.
This refers, of course, to the admission process for the U.S. Army’s top commando unit. The Delta Force.

In the beginning you stated Delta Force is only open to US Army and that is incorrect, Delta Force accepted members from all branches who can pass the training, there has been numbers cross branch transfers, the most famous of which was Kevin Holland who was first in DEVGRU/Seal Team 6 Operator then became a Delta Force Operator, but Delta routinely accepts Marines and Air Force personnel too.

Kevin Holland didn't went from DEVGRU straight to DELTA.. He retired from the military and was a civilian for 5 years. After 9/11 he wanted to return to DEVGRU and they said NO and he found a weird path to DELTA by joining the National Guard. The military changed after 9/11 because the U.S. knew they were in 2 wars that were going to last a long time (20 years) so they changed paths, promotions and re-enlistments. If the war didn't happened the way it did for the long haul there wouldn't be a path from Holland comeback from civilian to Delta because they wouldn't have needed him.

People really can’t grasp just how difficult it is to earn something like your Ranger tab, where 70% of applicants DOR (Drop On Request), much less an operator. If you make it all the way through all of the training and get into a JSOC unit, you’re a real life ninja.
What’s really nuts is that OTC and all that is the easy part! Once you get into the Unit, you have to earn your place everyday. If you stumble, don’t perform or whatever else, you’re gone 😬

There are some inaccuracies in the above video, but in the short summary, the unit recruits the majority from Special Forces and Rangers (and we now know they recruit from other branches as well) who are hardened season special operations units that can already rival other SOF units ( granted they differ in roles, with GBs specializing in UW, Rangers in direct action est). You take that selected elite community and put them through some of the toughest training possible, with 95% of them washing out. There have been many cases where selections yield zero candidates, and that is just selections and not OTC.
Lets look at Paul Howes's selection for comparison. He said that out of his two classes of 120 applicants each (120 applicants from the 75th Ranger Regiment and US special forces (Green Berets)), an average age of 30, already combat proven, all above E-4 ), only 12 to 14 completed the selection. That’s only a selection. After training (OTC), only 6 * finally made it into the unit. And that is considered to be high. According to ex Delta shooter turned SOFREP writer, George IV, when he personally ran A and S, that session only produced two graduates. They were sent back to their Units to wait until there were enough graduates from A&S to run an OTC course. There was even one OTC that produced a single graduate.
Delta is about quality, with their operators designed to operate in teams as small as 2 members. One operator claims Delta had only 400 operators in 1991, which that means in 14 years, only 400 shooters qualified OTC. ( George E Hand IV).
I really do get blown away by this.

After having been i the military virtually all my adult life as an infantryman [I’m now 69] and having worked with SF Soldiers, Navy SEALS, Marine snipers as well as alost continuously with line infantry, I am acutely conscious of what I call "standards creep”. Induction courses to SOF units such as the current Marine sniper course, the Navy SEALS BUDS and Delta selection are extraordinarily physicaly and mentally challenging.
The question in my mind, based on my experience is do they really need to be that difficult? I think not.
Here’s why. During the war in Vietnam, then Captain then Jim Land USMC and then SSGT Carlos Hathcock USMC set up a Marine sniper school in country. It succeeded in producing a large number of fine snipers with an above average success and survival rate. Today, Marine Sniper School is exponentially more difficult than Land and Hathcock’s school. But no one EVER said that their school was too easy or that it failed in its mission.
One wonders how much ego drives the increase in standards that literally break guys? If ego is really a part of this - the ability to say “Our course is the hardest” we ought to re-examine how we are doing business. I happen to know the guy who was the OIC of the Rhodesian SAS Qualification Course during the Rhodesian Bush War. Sure, the course was both mentally and physically challenging but its objective was to produce capable soldiers not to simply say “We have the hardest military course in the world”.
During the war in Iraq and Afghanistan the Army wanted to train 1,100 new snipers a year but only had class seats for 725. They foolishly didn’t ease up on un-necessarily hard physical standards and refocus on simply training already proven top notch soldiers - and critically, not letting National Guard organizations with the necessary range facilities take up the slack.. The result was they never turned out snipers in the numbers they needed - and other soldiers who would have been properly supported by the increased number of snipers were needlessly killed or wounded.
Another example to prove my point. No one has ever said that the Gurkha’s are anything but among or the very best if not the best general infantry in the world. Are they fit? Certainly. And their selction process is as much school based mental as it is physical [read up on the Doka Run which is hard but doable] but once past selection [in 2012 something like 10,00 young Napalese men vied for about 700 open slots] and sworn into the service, the process is primarily the training of skills.
I’m not saying our “top tier" schools should be walks in the park but when your success rate is less than 50% out of a pool of proven Marines and Soldiers, some rethinking is in order - if for no other reason than that of fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers.

During Selection, on all of the endurance marches, you are never given a time limit to complete the course. You are simply told, "Do your best." That basically means you had better be moving your ass to the best of your ability and within the parameters of the distance combined with designated ruck weight. Think of it this way....if the instructors were doing the course with you, you had better be moving at a pace to keep up with them, or you're f@#ked.

@@WarHammer0595 the Unit is an Army culture after all. All branches have their own history and culture. Just because you put different operators together from different branches doesn’t mean they will be tight together on their first deployment. That’s why Devgru only takes top Seals with years of combat deployments in the teams for their Tier 1 because it makes the teams tighter and the Navy is the only branch with maritime warfare culture for centuries. What makes a team the tightest is years together in the same community. That’s the reason they only take SEALS and stay within the community . It’s for a reason. If it didn’t work they would recruit from all branches but they don’t. All branches have their own culture and ways of doing things. DELTA and DEVGRU are all Tier 1 under JSOC. Both are trained for counterterrorism, hostage rescue, special recon, direct action, small quarter combat on high value targets. The difference between the 2 tier 1 is the water. Devgru gets more intense maritime training due to their culture. The world is 25% land and 75% ocean.

Not exactly. Every unit in every service has prior service people. I began my service in the US Navy and then joined the Army National Guard and finally Active Duty Army. I served in Airborne Infantry Long Range Surveillance and Special Forces. You can try out to get into Delta Selection while still being in another service but in order to get into the actual selection course and join the Unit you must first join the US Army and get an Army MOS( Delta Operator Training Course OTC is not an MOS School unlike the Special Forces Qualification Course that gives one a new 18 Series MOS upon graduation..) Delta is both part of the Joint Special Ops Command and US Army Special Ops Command and both of those fall under USSOCOM. JSOC is exactly that Joint meaning it has SEAL Team Six/Devgru, Delta, Army ISA,The Ranger Reconissace Company,US Airforce 24 Special Tactics Squadron. Delta, RRC and ISA are however all US Army units and you must be in the Army to be in them. Just as you must first be a Navy SEAL first to be in Seal Team SIX/ Devgru. Devgru does have support staff that come from other parts of the Navy that are not opperators for example they on occasion get K9 support from outside the unit though that is less often now. They have Navy SARCS as there Medical Support etc. Like SF though you can join from any job or unit in the Army though 70% of Delta currently comes from the 75th Ranger Regiment and there are good reasons for that.

    • @Devin183

@@Devin183 I served in SF with former Delta guys. You cant even try out for selection until your an E4 promotable. When the Delta Recruiters came to my LRS Company it was prior to 9/11 and it was E6 then so you have to have quite a bit of prior service time reguardless. That prior service time could be from another service but still required. 70% of Unit guys currently come from the Ranger Regiment and another 25% from SF. So only 5% currently come from somewhere else. Thats not necissarliy by design and they dont adhere to those stats. Ranger Regiment is the Armys Premier Direct Action Unit where just about everyone specializes in Direct Action Missions. SF does Direct Action but as a whole they dont specialize in it. Ranger Regiment also regularly works with Delta and the 2nd Ranger Bat has a very good Delta Selection prep course and this close relationship has lead to drawing more candidates from the Regiment than anywhere else. The Unit was created by a SF Officer nsmed Col. Charlie Beckwith after he had done exchage program with Brittish SAS. Until the Blackhawk Down incident in Somalia they drew much more heavily from SF. You have some advantage based on stats and on already having some basic skills if you are coming from either SF, Rangers or at least the Infantry but its in no way a requirement.

@@joshualittle877 I never said it was requirement I said it’s highly required, basically it’s giving you a better chance at getting invited to go to selection. I seen a 82nd guy in CAG who won the Ranger competition with Thomas Payne.

the pipeline you have listed is almost so incorrect i considered clicking off. you just have to have seen action, lots of it. currently the best and fastest way to do that is go in with an option 40 contract into the 75th ranger regiment. then and only then, after a few YEARS of that or a few YEARS in special forces, you can apply for delta force.
