- Four Americans face ammunition charges in Turks and Caicos, which carry a minimum penalty of 12 years in prison. Michael Wenrich, the father of Tyler Wenrich, who has been detained on the charges, says he was able to pay his son's bond Friday and get him out of jail until his court hearing.

Face the consequences of being irresponsible. Being American doesn’t make you immune to other country’s laws.
Who said it did?
@dcampbelldcampbell000 what a dumb question, the family, this news channel, and half the people in the comments.
@dcampbelldcampbell8000, I hear "But I'm an American!" outside the USA when I travel! Like it's a get out of jail free card!
The USA government should use its leverage with tourism to reduce the penalty to a more reasonable one.

Ridiculous that only is a “potential” fine for that!!🤡

The issue here is the general disrespect, ignorance and arrogance of Americans trying in idiotic ways to disregard the legal and cultural identities of other countries.
Exactly. If it were reversed they’d have no sympathy if it was someone in the US. We’d say our laws are our laws, don’t do the crime if you can’t handle it. Americans need to understand the rest of the world doesn’t cater to us. We have to respect their cultures and laws the same way we’d expect others to do here.

Was it smart to leave ammo in your bag and then fly to a foreign country with very strict gun laws??
HORSECRAP! Do people know about firearm violence in Turks and Caicos? Do people saying it’s inhumane feel the same about extreme sentences in the US?
I think it’s irresponsible to be a gun owner and have loose ammo in your regular travel bags and not have a clue about that! As a responsible gun owner, you SHOULD know the condition of every gun, and every bullet you own. That is NOT asking much of any gun owner.
FOUR Americans now are in Turks and Caicos with loose rounds, WTF?!?🤦♂️

Why is it inhumane? They broke the law in another country. They deserve to spend every single day of the 12 year sentence FOR BREAKING THE LAW.

It seems Turks and Caicos doesn't have ammunition manufacturing available and need to have to import ammunition and it seems Americans are transporting ammunition to an island to help the criminals attain ammunition. That is what the Island sees. And guess what, it turns out there are a bunch of Americans that travel there frequently and just happen to have ammunition.
My thoughts exactly
Interesting 🤔 I wonder if there is any truth to that, seems somewhat logical though.
If you go to a different country - it is best to know the laws, such as drinking laws in Saudi etc. You cannot be expected to know every single thing about that country, but it is logical to behave and not have contraband in your bag and on your person. why would they need ammo on a cruise??? Learning the lesson the hard way, for not checking your own bag. Isn't it the law to pack your own bag, and to declare that you have never left your bag with anyone.... while awaiting your flight/ arriving at the airport or to confirm this is a fact at the customs.
Really tired of hearing about this.
They knew the laws. They failed to check their own luggage to make sure that they had nothing contraband in it. The law is the law in that land. And they want their white privilege to get them out. And his Daddy's got to talk for him because he's too upset. 😢

I just don't get how you don't check your luggage nowadays. Especially after 9/11. I use the same bags I fly with for work and always makes sure there's nothing like knives or sharp objects. Even though in the US they just confiscate them and sell them for profit. Even this week I was contemplating whether a can of sardines was legal to take on a flight. I'd certainly check for a bullet

This is what happens when Americans call themselves “expats” and not “foreigners” when they travel.
One day us as American citizens won’t learn when traveling to other countries make certain you check your baggage to make certain you are not caring what is considered contraband in other countries. Tourists coming to the US are expected to respect the laws of the US. Aren't they?
Just stay in the US there are plenty of things to do and plenty of places to go.
If someone from Amsterdam came to the US and was Arrested for standing in a window with their boobs and vajayjay out, and a sign selling sex- I’d EXPECT them to have to go through our legal system. Prostitution in the US is illegal.
If you are a Citizen of the US and you decide to leave our country, YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE LAWS IN THE COUNTRY YOU ARE ENTERING. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to be aware of the laws beforehand. I’ll repeat that for the dad who is upset that his son wasn’t “made aware”, IT WAS HIS RESPONSIBILITY TO BE AWARE OF THE LAWS.
Furthermore, there is only ONE cruise ship that sails under the United States flag and follows the US Law while in international waters. 95% follow the laws of the Bahamas. I am willing to bet he isn’t aware of those either.
He can call EVERY SENATOR HE WANTS, every TSA rep he wants, and every cruise employee he wants- ZERO of them have the ability to preemptively warn his son about every law in every country that he may go into. The TSA also only screens in the situation provided. So, if you are boarding a boat in Florida they are screening your bag (FL) for the boat (Bahamas). They can’t screen for a location preemptively, it would take DAYS to screen the entire boat for the entire trip.
I don't think American jails have pillows either. It's a safety issue. Of all things to point out, using your shoes for pillows...
tough crap.....they broke the law and should be held accountable
If you don't take the laws in other countries seriously, are you so loose with laws in the U.S., too?
Yes. A majority of Americans disregard any and every law applicable. They ignore the ones they know and don't care to learn anything.
It's why 9/10 Americans do 20+ mph everywhere they go. They run stop signs & red lights as if they don't apply. They seriously disregard any laws or signs that indicate expected behavior.
All because "this is America. Freedom. I can do what I want" foolishness & nonsense.
I feel very bad for these four but they should really find out laws of where they are going.
I go to the gun range regularly and I specifically have a range bag/pack. Why would anyone carry ammo in their normal travel baggage. Either these dudes are really dumb or they're being set up.

People don’t seem to realize that two ‘rounds’ is two bullets that could easily slip into the creases/crevices of a suitcase. Or hide in a side pocket.
I recently cleaned out my husband’s suitcase, and I came across a zipper pocket that I didn’t know was there. It was full of ink pens and a super old package of mints.
