I have 97' 2500 v10 4x4 extended cab. for the world of gas engines, this truck does really well for low end torque. every time something goes wrong, we just fix it and it always starts up, no matter how long it sits or how cold it gets. Take it up hunting in the thick brush and who cares. get firewood and beat the shit out of it, and who cares. Its one of them good old gassers everyone should have that live in the country or on a farm
You are 110% right. They are the ultimate farm truck. -40 cold start not an issue, they run on bad gas, and all kinds of off the line grunt like you say. The only major downfall is they are hard on fuel.
The engines in these are very low compression plus i’m at minimum 3500 feet so premium fuel is not needed here unless it has no ethanol in it which then would be a bit of a benefit i’m guessing. I sold the truck over a year ago couldn’t afford to feed it lol
I call bullshit a healthy 14 duramax will drag 11 000lbs around like its hardly there I do it all the time and I once owned a v10 dodge the Duramax out works my old v10 in every way including mpg doing that work the V10 was a oka truck was much better after i swapped in a nv 4500 but still doesnt compare to a duramax.
Prolly about 40k grand more expensive for a newer duramax and a regear would prolly bring a v10 dodge into its league. Thing about power is that it can come from the engine or the gearing and every old 4 speed pickup was geared too high. Slap some 410 or even 456 gears in and all the sudden you got a 8k pound muscle truck
I got a 95 dodge ram v10 dually 4x4 love the truck. It was my grandpa's truck I think he bought it new been pulling trailer since day one. Now I got it and i love it, but right now getting fixed becuase I blew a head gasket and now got the engine torn apart replacing all the gaskets. Then I found out the valve body in the transmission is burnt out. Now I'm debating on get the transmission in the truck rebuild which is 6,600 dallors to rebuild it with all the upgrades or buy a "new" trans for 2200 dallors. I got the older 47rh transmission. Other then those things I love the truck it was my most reliable 4x4 till the head gasket blew.
@@bryonsusedautos I live in crawfordsville indiana. I was using that range as a buffer. I always are 100 to 500 on an estimate to make sure I'll have enough because you never know. I ended up having my uncle help me put it in for 450. It's still running like a horse.
I have 2 of these trucks a 2500 srw and a 3500 drw I'm scared to admit I have towed way more with both of them than what they are rated for. But yea going uphill or in my case up the passes is an acceleration struggle. But I wouldn't trade them for anything. My dad's the 2500 which I now own is extremely high miles and the 3500 has now 279,xxx so still a baby I've had her since December 2020 and I bought her with 236,020

Ya My truck is a beast has some rust but it seems very reliable (knock on wood) lol It still pulls better than a V8 would up in the hills and it’s a super smooth engine. It’s just the gas it guzzles that I don’t like. I like the Cummins better for off roading it just has a nicer power for that but the noise gets annoying. My V10 rides a lot smoother on the bush roads as well vs the Cummins trucks i’ve had.
Are yours automatic or standard? And do you know what gears? I was thinking of building up this V10 strictly for towing and lowering the gear ratio. I have 3:55’s and that is not great for towing at all.
@@Indeewoods miles, both unfortunately are automatic I would much rather have a standard trans. Yes both are the V10 my fiance has the cummins 5.9 24v and I hate his truck with a passion it's an 02 with 395,xxx and has been the most unreliable thing on the planet. I'm not sure what the gear ratios are as I've never really looked into it. They both have the Dana 80 rear ends though as far as I know. Both are 2wd though I'm toying with going ahead and doing 4x4 conversions on both. The Dually is an extended cab long bed and the 2500 is a regular cab long bed. Though I'm thinking of making the 2500 a flat bed since the bed on it is toast. Cab I as rust free on it but the bed has had a few fights over the years with backhoes and fork lifts in attempts to load roundbales into the bed. My dually is from Mexico city and Missouri areas so not to much to talk about rust wise, besides a bit of surface rust on the hood. Besides that nothing. Jasens truck which was an Alaska truck then Canada and finally Washington truck has quite a bit of rust but someone tried covering it with fender flares and the chrome trim for the doors and parts of the bed. Not to mention trying some rhino liner on the cab corners...
Ya I offten wish I had a standard but mine has a shift kit so it’s not to bad. Love to do a 6 speed swap if it could be done that would make for a fun truck.

@importantwill3224 you will hear people tell you that they get 13 or 15 miles to the gallon but they don’t get any more than 8 mile per gallon usually and if you’re just cruising real slow speeds like off-road driving they get about five they just drink fuel like no other but I mean there a V 10 low compression engine they were designed to run on poor fuel and they’re very reliable. There’s no issues there. Very smooth. running engine just hard on fuel. If you want a real engine, that makes lots of power and gets great fuel economy just put a 12 valve Cummins in that thing and be done with it.
@@Indeewoods yeah, I have a 2001 V10 4wd auto, with 4.10s and it's a beast. However, I think the auto transmission kills the performance overall, even with the 4.10s. I test drove a 5spd with the 3.55s and it felt like it had so much more power, despite the taller gear ratio. I might actually go for a 5spd swap someday.

I got, new O2 sensors, intake manifold gasket, valve cover gaskets, all new plugs, new fuel sending unit pump, new air filter, new motor oil, new trans oil and filter, new oil in both diffs. I was told my transmission needs overhaul, due to worn clutch bands. It down shifts on take off when given throttle, so I have to gently apply throttle or else it down sifts and shutters and revs high on rpm as it up shifts hard into second then sometimes slips. My V10 has power when driving 40-50 mph but gear hunts 2-3 when OD is off and 3-4 when OD is on. It does up shift and down shift fair, it goes into OD at 55-60mph on highway but I feel like when holding the throttle half way I feel it gradually losing torque. so in basic terms...my transmission is tired... :(
@lesterpittenger5992 I have no idea what you’re even talking about because you never said, in your first reply to me. Be a little more specific please. It sounds like you’re referring to some thing I said in the video you have to realize I have over 650 videos I don’t remember each one lol 4th gear is OD. When you take it out of OD it drops to 3rd and locks until it see’s to much load then it unlocks to save the torque converter clutch but that also heats up the transmission pretty quick.
@lesterpittenger5992 like I say I don’t know what you are referring to in the video. I’d have to watch it again to try and figure out exactly what it is you are getting at. Are you saying OD is 3rd gear? This is a 4 speed transmission not a 3 speed if that’s what you are thinking.
@@Indeewoods I had one I sold in 2020. I've been kicking myself ever since. It was just a single cab Long bed half ton 5.9 V8. Good for around the yard, cutting wood, dump runs etc. I sold it because I was buying new truck and retiring my 2009. Unfortunately the 2009 got destroyed just after I sold the 2001. So now I have to use my new truck for that stuff and I really don't like doing that.
I hear ya. The new trucks are just not the same either for that kind of work. Not sure why but thevold trucks just seem better. That old V10 sure gets around the bush. Loves her drink though haha!

I need a temporary truck anyway so maybe I could make it happen. Would be a fun experiment
@davidtweedy8036 I think they had a couple of bad years in the beginning but after that they were stone reliable they were actually built really well from the factory, but I think they had issues with electrical are the injection system. They drink feel like no other, though just brutal on fuel mileage
Haha that made me laugh. I guess it’s an easy enough mistake to make if one is used to mph. When I talk speed/temperature I usually throw in Fahrenheit and MPH for my USA 🇺🇸 friends. All good 🍻
I’ve owned many Diesels. I love the power I just got the truck cheap and used it while I built another truck. I do like how quiet it is but then again if one wants to spent 70,000 I supposed I could have a quiet diesel.

P.S- I had the same truck but a 98 quad cab with the 12 valve and that thing would still not pull that heavy of a load locked up in those hills. If I had a lock up switch on that truck it would have though where as there is no way this V10 would have that much torque.
@@Indeewoods I have a 98.5 24v with a ZXT tuner 7 .08 injectors and the trans is built. With 10k lbs in a trailer I let this thing lockup in overdrive with my foot to the floor. And while it’s locked if you floor it it doesn’t unlock it just powered through.
Ya there is mo replacment for diesel power especially when modified slightly. That V10 cost me 500 bucks though so I suppose that is why I bought it lol

Those dodge V10s are pretty strong. You should use premium gasoline when towing 11,000 pounds.

my dads got one of these and it outpulls my uncles 2014 duramax. we towed an 12,000 lb mini excavator up a 9% grade hill.

If you don't have emissions testing, get some All Flow catalytic converters. Let that V10 breathe and pull hills even easier.

I switched it out. It’s rated for 17,000 with equalizer bars or 16 ,000 without although i’d never tow that much.

3:55. 4:10 would have really helped it out but was suprised how good it pulled with 3:55. I have a few videos on that thing towing.

They are a bit sluggish at hwy speeds when the fuel pumps get weak.

And also when the 02 sensors are dirty and old. Run only NTK Oxygen sensors and check your fuel pump pressure or replace the pump
