I'm thinking he wanted to say
"abject poverty", not "abstract poverty", but abstract poverty is an interesting idea

I read "Tropic of Cancer" when I was 19, and yes, reading it was one of those seminal experiences in the life of the young, naïve, burgeoning writer I was then.

Tom Waits must have read the essay by Orwell. He has a song "Starving in the Belly of a Whale"

A moment ripe for content: when James Joyce met Marcel Proust. An oddly comical meeting at a party

Is the narrator a robot? I got a giggle out of the mispronunciation of ennui.

Why did you white out his face almost 5 minutes in? I don't see the point, especially since his face is the preview image.

Long ago when I was a young boy, I had spotted The Tropic of Cancer on my grandmother´s towering book shelf. It was always that little blue book spine that drew me to the title alone, not the author. I didn´t read books before I grew into my teens, but I was fascinated by book covers for years. My young mind often asked What is this book ? What´s a tropic of cancer? Lol. Thirty years later, The Tropic of Cancer remains on my reading list after having found the a copy at my local thrift shop. Thank you for your critical analysis of Henry Miller´s seminal novel.

Forgot to mention that I hadn’t heard of this book before and feel somewhat guilty for a strange reason but then again I’m reminded of the words that it matters not what the book is about but the fact that your brain is engaged is the most important aspect, who knows what I had my head tucked into, could have been ‘Graves White Goddess or just as easily the Reader’s Wives section of Fiesta magazine, they all count.. 🫣😉📚

Fascinating piece on one of the great American writers and thinkers. I especially love The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy.
