Very true, many incorrectly assumed his politics just from the artwork on an ideal for living. I don’t think anyone will ever truly understand Ian and his influences with joy division giving just a short glimpse into his thinking.
Good informative video. A band of teens together only for 3 years and only released only 2 albums (unknown pleasures and closer) could still be such an influence of rock music 40 years later and have songs covered by multiple artists Rip Ian
It's always such a joy to see a new video of yours pop up. You and Professor Skye both bring such a wonderful perspective to pop culture by involving literature. So excited for what is to come from you in the future!
What a great, well presented documentary on one of music’s most underrated poets/lyricists. I’m appreciative of the scope and focus you’ve put into Ians’ writing. Yet, another great presentation. Thank you.
well done, very interesting research! I'm a massive Joy Division collector & they are my number 1 band & have saved me through troubling times i had to endure. No other bands music have given me the feeling of being saved from constant pain & a place that gives me freedom of chronic anxiety. I owe the band a lot of gratitude. Weird that i share the same love for the same literature except Burroughs whom depicts peadophilia in 'naked lunch' which has graphic rape & hanging of pubescent boys which was so degenerate, that the german edition didn't translate but left it in ,in original language. A pity,Ian didn't find bukowsksy, one of the best writer of the past millenia.
Its definitely one of the best music biographies out there. Very condensed and informative. I got a lot of information from that book that proved useful in this video.
I remember thinking at the time of release of Unknown Pleasures that they had taken the imaginary environments of Philip K Dick, JG Ballard and other new wave SF books and made a soundscape. Texture and lighting were key inspirations.
One of the best summations of Naked Lunch, given here to examine the themes of Ian's lyrics, but having read the book a few times I feel I understand the book more for having heard the brief explanation given in this video.
@@LIFEAFTEREVERYTHING His writing is important , because when he was writing his books no one else was talking about what he wrote about , this being the conservatives 50s , we was also part of the generation called the beats , and inspired other artists around him at the time ,
Rowan Atkinson's serious film role turn,. ala Man on the Moon, or Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting, was an Ian Curtis bio pic, the timing is long gone now, but with full respect to both I think it could have been great.
I love the writings of William Burroughs but I hate the way he always has characters hanging themselves. I think this may have influenced Ian in a negative way. JOHNNY 23 is a short story collection by Burroughs and Ian wrote a poem with the same name. One book which I love is ENVIRONMENTS AND HAPPENINGS by Adrian Henri and it really shocked me that Ian had this inspiring and interesting Performance Art book in his collection. If Ian had lived he could have also been an actor or a director. He did acting workshops at school. Ian's writings are very vague because he was a young writer striving for his own voice and visions. He could have became a great British novel writer in his 20's never mind his 40's or 50's. His writings have depth.
I made the mistake of going to watch him live, I think everyone who’s watched him knows what I’m talking about and he was not even attempting to show any effort and every time I’ve watched him live since he did the same, half the shows he barely managed to speed read the songs… Now having said that I also remember the very moment I heard New York 1989 and Rock and Roll Animal 1972 so fair play for the best of his albums but boy did he drop some dreadful stuff 😂 Rest Well Lou baby.. 🎵🙏 I hope he’s found peace and life without air to breathe finally discovered who made the trees who made the sky and the rest of the questions from Tripatinas Speech Who Am I? Off The Raven. 🚬
I really hate how we take everything an artist who ended their life wrote as a clue for why they did it. People like Curtis, Elliott Smith, and Nick Drake were complex individuals and treating their art like it’s just a confessional diary is very disrespectful.

An all around athlete of art. I think episodic severity would make it seem like death is the answer. No, guilty pleasure needs to end. He was most likely transgressive and acting like it was a breakthru. A breakthru is honing an art and not taking dares and playing with noteriety. I guess a 23 year old would not be able to understand that.
It is an old English past participle form, which is why it’s used in America while the UK has for the most dropped it. But it’s not incorrect in the UK, it’s just fallen into desuse. Both forms at the end of the day are correct though. Former English teacher here.

Great video man. Thank you
Ian was such a misunderstood person, but it is through his lyrics that we can barely get what was going on in his mind.
Very true, many incorrectly assumed his politics just from the artwork on an ideal for living. I don’t think anyone will ever truly understand Ian and his influences with joy division giving just a short glimpse into his thinking.
Ian Curtis seems to be an insightful individual. The impact he has left behind made an eternal mark on anyone who could be familiar with him.
I guess you could say...The Eternal.
'who could be familiar with him'?... on anyone familiar with him.
I always felt that 'Atrocity Exhbition', both title and lyrics, fitted really well with David Lynch's 1980 film, 'The Elephant Man'.
I am not an animal, I am a human being..
Good informative video. A band of teens together only for 3 years and only released only 2 albums (unknown pleasures and closer) could still be such an influence of rock music 40 years later and have songs covered by multiple artists Rip Ian
honestly a book by ian curtis or even a book written in his style would be so cool

This video deserves WAY more views I know you worked hard on this
This video and your one on Lou Reed are fantastic!
Great insight/essay! We need more analyses about the relations between pop/rock music and other arts, literature among them.
YES! Also, highly recommend his wife's biography of him. Very interesting read for insight on their marriage particularly

A true artist
Superb documentary. Very well researched and put together.
Thank you for this. I just filled out my reading list for the foreseeable future.
Wonderful archive footage, super documentary 👏
I remember thinking at the time of release of Unknown Pleasures that they had taken the imaginary environments of Philip K Dick, JG Ballard and other new wave SF books and made a soundscape. Texture and lighting were key inspirations.
Very well put together documentary. Keep up the good work.
Btw it was actually Bernard who had the House of Dolls book and suggested the name. It was Benard with much of the other Nazi stuff too
Very well made video, thank you. I love Kafka, i love Curtis
Ian Curtis, Morrissey, Ian Brown and Mark E Smith are the most literate guys who came out of Manchester in my opinion.
Mark Burgess as well...
John cooper clarke
only the Gallagher Brothers don't read.

I don't know why but this but it seems like the more decrepid your body becomes the more pure and expressive your art becomes
Disorder is the song on repeat that represents the soundtrack of my life.
Great channel love this on Curtis.
Syd Barrett, Jim Morrison vids would be awesome 😍😍
William S. Burroughs = One of the most important writers of the 20th century.
Rest in peace to him and Ian Curtis

My entry point to getting interested in literature especially JG Ballard and William Burroughs
Rowan Atkinson's serious film role turn,. ala Man on the Moon, or Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting, was an Ian Curtis bio pic, the timing is long gone now, but with full respect to both I think it could have been great.
That would have been interesting.
I didn't know that Ian Curtis was a Nektar fan. That's pretty cool. Then again, that shouldn't be too surprising givrn Isn's interests.
Thank you!
Since you brought up Anthony Burgess, could you do a video on his military service and post war teaching career?

you made me cry with that "he could've be..."
bc it's true... he could've be, he is already but he could've be more, he could've DO more...
Very good. I enjoyed that. Great work. I'm wondering right now if Curtis was Marco Corbelli's psychic twin..

amazing video thank you

I wonder if Ian ever read the book by Tadeusz Borowski.... This Way for the Gas Ladies and Gentlemen. ???

Shame he killed himself
Feels very AI. A JD listener certainly wouldn't have made these song choices. And any living brit can pronounce "Burgess". Ambitious, though.
Yes I choked....Aĺso knowing the band peripherally nothing sounds like a reaction of any of them.

Joy Division/New Order/Sex Pistols would of been cancelled in 2023 , now do you understand kids.
Ironically perhaps, it's Roger Waters that doubtless understands this all too well.
