Still got my old Savage 25 from around 2004. Blew out the OEM engine years ago, but I recently dropped in a Big Red .28 engine and I've been quite happy so far. After just 3 tanks of fuel it's quite peppy and will do a wheelie or flip over with little input.
Price is definitely way too high but tbf hpi is still recovering from bankruptcy somewhat, so I'm hoping they'll lower the prices and improve their cars as they get better.
Agree, I understand why the prices are high and that's part of why I still support them. I want to see them come out of this on the other side as much as anyone.
The prices have come down alot, atleast here in Germany. You can now get one for 550€ on average, with some sales down to 500 sometimes. Which imho is a fair price in the current market.
The handling fix is 40 weight oil and the hpi sway bar kit, much improved and then to really wrap it up, the extended wheel hex widening kit. She's on rails then.theres always been these quirky things about the savage but it more than makes up for it with its legendary power and durability and that sound! You can't mistake anything for that savage nitro sound. I am disappointed that after all these years they finally do a re-release and don't address really any of the quirky issues that really wouldn't have taken much R&D to resolve. I can recommend the 3spd tranny upgrade IF! U have the patience to tune it and set it properly, it takes alot of time being you have to take the tranny apart to set one of the shifts(totally ridiculous hpi) but it becomes a speed demon once complete. The tires look like a good improvement but why HPI why didn't you extend roof skid rails onto the actual roof after taking the time to design a rollbar type rail in the bed area of body, the hood plastic pieces do nothing, they should have installed a stiffening brace inside body and skid rails as savage body's get just DESTROYED. Also no included wheelie bar? Come on hpi.i dont know if they did this "blow 'n go" re-release to gauge interest in the truck and then do a redesign but they only got one shot at drawing new attention to the platform and they failed on that part so tragically this platform will fall into obscurity again. Makes me sad as I had over a decade long love affair with this truck! Oh and p.s...still the plastic "melting" pipe included, WTF HPI, 700 dollar truck and no 20 dollar(RETAIL)hpi ribbed pipe included or the hpi purple performance pipe? This is type of shenanigans is why your going to fail again, COME ON HPI
Fuel tank doesn't block the LSN if you have the carb clamped in properly... That throttle slide should be in line with the linkage to avoid it getting stuck open.
@@RazorRC honestly the tmaxx 3.3 is so fun. It does have weak points like the bulkheads and maybe the shock towers (haven’t broken one). But so far no issues even when I landed underside down on concrete with no body. Also legendary aftermarket support
I’m working on an original savage .25 ss with a dynamite.28 big red in it. It’s my first nitro truck. They’re kinda a pain to work on but seem like a solid monster truck platform. So far I’ve got less than 100 bucks into it plus another 40 in the body I’m painting for it. Not bad for what they sold for new.
Hi thank you for your video. I was actually just getting ready to buy this truck. But now I have two questions if you have time. 1) Does the new metal pipe matter if it's left or right side made? I mean with the nipple on pipe to pressure tank. 2) Do you know of a fuel tank fix? The leaning and not being able to adjust low speed is a huge problem . Thank you Eric
I agree with that the value is way off for the savage. But the savage is one of my favorite nitro monster trucks because of the TVP chassis design because it mimics a tube stile monster truck chassis.
Im in uk and not really running nitros but checking eBay every now and then. You can get older savage in mint condition under 200£ used. Even if you dump 300£ in upgrades on it you will still be under the price of new and most likely with much better truck. Nitro is more tinkery so people aren’t scared to wrench on them. You say it’s a project car, 200£ eBay project ot 650£ “new” project. Dunno, that’s a tough one
Couple facts hpi savage came out in 2001 as a kit came as a .21 and I believe a .19. They are great trucks my dad has a original savage from 2001 and it rolls better than most new cars and just got my own older savage x and runs great
The Savage never came with a.19 the 1st savage back in 2001 was the Savage 21 and that as the name says had a .21 mill. I got my 1st Savage back in 2001, now at the age of 58 I have 11 of them in my collect and I must say the quality of the new generation since there relaunch is woaful. The parts used to be made in Taiwan and were pretty decent but since the relaunch it's all made in China and the quality has gone rite down the toilet. I still love these trucks but the old school parts were so much more durable.
Great review of the Savage truck and have got to agree with you about the composite exhaust, it is totally woafull and not siutable to be on a 4.6 mill. I have had 3 of these pipes just melt on me. The new one which are now made in China and not in Taiwan as the older one were aren't worth having. The last one to melt didn't even last a tank of fuel. They need to use ally pipes like they do on the 5.9 XL model. Aslo their after sales help is non-existent.
It’s fuel pressure, the more weight pushing down on the fuel at the bottom, the more fuel pressure you have. A tank that is big on top and smaller on the bottom has much more fuel pressure when the tank is full than when it is close to empty. A tank that is just a box will have less of a change in fuel pressure as the tank empties.
I own the Flux X v2 Gt-6 since Dezember and let me tell my pros and cons. The tires are crap The servo is crap The body will break fast The new hex screws are crap not metric and not inch The diffs of the first rollout of december need to be shimmed Every screw of the drivetrain including the motor mount is loose and needa locktide The housing the esc is sitting in is crap throw it away or your esc will burn Do the longer screw mod at the front bumper or you will need a new bumperarm every weekend It needs the center diff But This thing shimmed is bulletproof. I broke my first chassis after a lot of 12-15m high jumps and thats ok. With the centerdiff it can take 8s easily.
Premium brand?! HPIs downfall has always been premium price but less than premium features. Don't get me wrong, fun truck but, at that price, just not going to compete long term! Thanks for your thoughts, enjoyed the video👍
I think I'd rather buy the old one used. It didn't break as much as this new one and the improvements don't outweigh the downgrade in quality.
Is the downgrade in quality really that bad?

Cool! Associated should make the monster GT again that was the best handling nitro monster truck I ever had!
@Sergeant J's RC Adventures not opinion my friend, pretty much fact lol the Revo platinum is a close 2nd

Great review as always👍
The price is why I bought a Tmaxx 3.3. Spend the money I save getting better shocks, aluminum bulkheads and nitro fuel. Loving the Tmaxx
I need to get one of those!

@@RazorRC oh and the Tmaxx 3.3 is basically the size of the Savage X.
@@lastpally I love how you can build a T-Maxx entirely out of aftermarket parts
Cool RC and great review, have a great weekend brother
This or revo 3.3 I’m stuck and the jato
I’ll have a comparison with the Revo 3.3 soon.
Does this have reverse?

same engine I put in mine. It's zippy compared to the OEM.
What size bead are the tires?
I have Traxxas Tmaxx 3.3 and Classic model both have reverse in them. I prefer those instead of the Hpi savage. But still looks like a solid rc.
And I really enjoy your videos you're so knowledgeable about this how long have you been running RC's by the way
9 years

What did you end up buying? (Since nobody would answer your question)
How do you like the truck you purchased?
I agree with that the value is way off for the savage. But the savage is one of my favorite nitro monster trucks because of the TVP chassis design because it mimics a tube stile monster truck chassis.

How does tank shape affect motor being lean or rich. That makes 0 sense

Brilliant video mate nice truck mate 👌
Turn the carb , and you can reach the low speed just fine .
The gas tank issue is an old one - gotta just replace it with a different one 😅
💯💯💯
I own the Flux X v2 Gt-6 since Dezember and let me tell my pros and cons.
The tires are crap
The servo is crap
The body will break fast
The new hex screws are crap not metric and not inch
The diffs of the first rollout of december need to be shimmed
Every screw of the drivetrain including the motor mount is loose and needa locktide
The housing the esc is sitting in is crap throw it away or your esc will burn
Do the longer screw mod at the front bumper or you will need a new bumperarm every weekend
It needs the center diff
But
This thing shimmed is bulletproof.
I broke my first chassis after a lot of 12-15m high jumps and thats ok.
With the centerdiff it can take 8s easily.
For 750.00 one would think hpi would have fixed the half tank lean problem 🤔

yeah, their image is premium and I think that's why they charge more, but the actual truck is missing a few things when you look at it closely.
Hpi that last company making true monster truck with a center transmission, no 3 diff bullshit that causes the front tires to baloon
Yo brother I think you're a daylight dollar short on this one. But great vid none the less. Thank's for Sharing 👍💯✌
ha, well the nitro market moves so slowly, anything released in the past 5 years is considered new!

Gas is dead

Nitro buggy is still the second most popular class in racing.
The truck is trash and way over priced👎👎
I sold my 6s kraton for nitro savage 🤣 at least ot won't bend the chassis and strip diffs
