Brian May and Ford....My favourite guitarist and my favourite Car brand.....it doesn't get any better...massive Queen fan and drive nothing but Fords...🚙
Personal preference. This tune is aggressive, it grabs your attention. It's hopeful, enthusiastic, aspirational, everything a marketing nut could hope for. It's perfect.
I remember seeing this ad the very first time it was aired... absolutely astonishing at the time to see an ad that was so long. It just kept coming at you with more rock, more power chords, more solo, more rally cars. Back then the Cossie was *the* dominant sport saloon.
My old childhood friend Jonathan was the biggest car fanatic I ever knew. He loved cars in general but he had a soft spot for Fords in the UK. His Dad drove a Sierra Cosworth at the time and he even named his dog Cosworth. But man....this was his favourite song and whenever it came on, he used to jump up and down complete with rocking out with his fists pumping and shouting out the chorus. On a side note, Brian played all the instruments on this song.
At the time I was a staunch ford disliker at the time (though oddly I adored the mk1 Escort and begrudgingly liked the mk2 and mk5 Rs2000s) I thought this was one of the coolest car adverts I'd ever seen! These days I can appreciate just about any car going but despite my BL/Rover and Renault leanings I developed a gigantic love for Ford and Vauxhall motors!
Brian wrote driven by you and asked for Freddie’s approval and said he should sing it and Freddie said it’s beautiful and said brain you should sing it
This came out when I was building my Westfield using mostly Ford components in 1992. It was great coming in from the garage to have a rest, sitting down with a mug of tea and watching this. I was a bit obsessed with cars back then.
This really is a mini classic - the ad and the song. It's quite an achievement to craft either, let alone having both fitted together with perfect precision. Neat how they address almost every Ford demographic. The tagline is one of advertsing's best actually in itself, so simple yet so clever. 'Ford. Everything we do is driven by you.'
Goose bumps. It seems like yesterday, not only for the advert, but for the vehicles being around, too. Who didn't want an Escort Cosworth back then and who still wants one today ,32 years later in 2024 ?

I bought Back To The Light a while after seeing this ad, and can't help thinking that he wrote the song for Ford and then used the funds to release the album, although I know it was years in the making. The lyrics to Driven By You make more sense in the ad than on the album!
Sadly 6 years later, there are thousands of them on the road - the Transit "Custom" - which sounded the death knell for proper transit vans in SWB and MWB
Now, I worked for Ford at the time in their European headquarters and I'd love someone to put me right on this but this was a rushed job to replace the ad that WAS supposed to come out. We had been given a preview of it and it was on another level of wow than even this. A montage of all the great Ford rally cars put to the Pointer Sister's I'm so Excited track. Problem was, the song had been grabbed by a chocolate bar or something for an advert and somebody in the marketing department hadn't realised so they couldn't use it. If I'm wrong, it's he passage of time I can blame. If I'm right, I wish there was a version of it out there to watch.
Cannot confirm or deny but sure 'I'm So Excited' was indeed used for the Cadbury's Flake around the same time! I'm guessing though it wasn't a case that they weren't allowed to use it butore that people would have associated the two adverts via the music which would have been a bit odd! I think this song is perfect and the so is the advert. I wish Ford would make a celebratory advert again like this and use this EXACT song and not feature some embarrassing rap type rubbish.

I do like the idea of a rally car montage but I think 'So excited' (good as it is) would have been a terrible choice. The best song won out, thankfully.
the 90's were the best years when Fords were manufacturing proper cars like the Fiesta, Escort and Sierra unlike the over priced plastic tonka toy crap you get these days,
That's great man!!! Mines had one owner from new, 27,000 miles, 21 service stamps from the same Ford main dealer (serviced every year) with all bills/receipts, no rust anywhere, mint condition and like a new car!!!
He's talking shite mate. Maybe his judgement has been clouded by nostalgia? He fails to acknowledge that when you take inflation into account, the base Escort from 1991 is MORE expensive than the base Focus and the Focus has more equipment as standard.
The 90's Escort blotted it's copy book by performing 1 star in the EuroNCAP crash tests and potentially putting the driver and front passenger at serious risk of potential injuries to legs chest thighs feet knees etc.
This ad's cool; the Sierra was a fine car, as was Escort; shame the US didn't get the same Escort as the UK did. The Sierra was a great road car; the US had it as the Merkur XR4Ti, and what a car it was.
