I noticed a funny pattern watching this video. Most of the guys with the lower speeds were roundabout guesses, but most of the guys with the faster speeds were more precise, many of which could recall the date and location too. Just goes to show how important those top speed numbers are to the real speed freaks out there.

My top speed on bicycle is 60 km/h. With mtb on downhill with tailwind on smooth road. 60 km/h feels pretty insane. Can't imagine what 135 km/h feels...

Similar to you I hit 65 on a mtb downhill on a road. I hit 67-70 on a road bike (depending on if you believe garmin or strava) not to long ago as well and have to say that the mountain bike was much scarier. The tires just get so loud and you think about hoe much damage they could do if they fell apart. The road bike has a really quiet freewheel so I think that also made the speed less apparent.

My fastest was 54kph (I know - wow), downhill with a following wind. This was on Manchester Road, Hyde UK.
I can't do it often as motorists overtake and turn in front of me to get on the motorway slip road. I could be costing them 3, maybe as much as 4 seconds so they have no choice.

What an excellent and interesting question. I really appreciate that you edited it so that the very first one was stated in MPH, then converted over - this gave relevance and a quick-comparison aspect to the entire video for those of use who use miles per hour. I have been clocked once at well over 50 MPH down a Pennsylvania run, and while the people who witnessed it and I knew it was fast (especially considering the hard left turn half-way down that really brought my motorcycling cornering skills into play, perhaps as well as me using my own body's strength to make the steel frame flex less (something I've even done on old steel-framed motorcycles in the turns)), I knew the pros did descend much faster... I just didn't know how fast. Those really are incredible speeds, and it really was an enjoyable episode. Good working, Dan.

55mph (88kmph) on a long straight road down into the village of Holymoorside near Chesterfield, Derbyshire. I had reached 49.7mph a couple of times on it and promised myself I would stop trying if I got to 50mph. A few weeks later, with a helping tailwind, I got to 51mph. But the time I got my record I wasn't even trying, it was just that the tailwind was so strong and in the right direction.Had to take a photo of my Cateye when I stopped at the bottom (pre-Strava days)

114 kph, Col Du Galibier, 1993 TDF race day (morning ahead of the race). Heading down towards Serre Chevalier on my new Kestrel SC200 when one of the Motorola team cars passed me, someone in the car shouted out the window (sounded like encouragement). I was a big Steve Bauer and Andy Hampsten fan so it all went to my head and I started showing off. I kept that Cateye computer with that top speed for decades to show off to friends :-)

I once passed a car at about 55mph descending Rim of the World Highway above San Bernardino in California. It just wasn't going fast enough. Incidentally in those days we didn't wear helmets during training, all we had were those leather tube ones that were fairly ineffective (though required during races). A problem with going that fast was that my mind would tend to wander and worry about how well I had built the wheels I was using.

105 kph/65mph, Palenville Mountain Road, (Catskill Mountains) Greene County NY, USA, this loop has the famous Devil's Kitchen climb. I passed 16 cars and 2 motorcycles on this descent, that was in 1985. Our team used to go there for mountain training 5 or 6 times a year. I got lucky that day as the road flattened at the bottom after a mile I had a bad puncture that ruined the tyre.

Hit 90kmh in Lanzarote last October. That was pretty mental. You had a tight technical section at the top then the road straightened for about 1.5 miles and you just flew towards the sea.

Every bike has a speed at which they oscillate. Mine ( orbea) is at close to 55 km/hr. It is fine above that speed ( or below it of course) . Very similar to a plane breaking the sound barrier. AT the critical speed things get bumpy. My wife has the identical bike and she stopped quite petrified one day. She had exactly the same experience at exactly the same speed but had no idea of what it was.

1996, going to the ferry in Tadoussac QC. I hit 106 kph. You should have heard the hum on my Cannondale 2.8 with an aluminium fork. I was riding in the third lane because of tire ruts in the first two, a semi was going up slowly, and the Winnebago right behind pulled into my lane, as I went by, it sounded like a big woof. Scared me so badly that I didn't ride my bike for a week.

Likewise, I think Central Mexico, with tall mountains, long, straight roads, and less air resistance, is a very good place for high-speed downhills. The only downside is that you must go with a well organized group, or only with big organized races. I kept my bicycle very austere, stripped down and with a very unassuming appearance in order to deter thieves...

Great listening to the speeds and places. I often go to Lake Garda on holiday and there are quite a few mountains around the lake. I found my top speed over the top of San Zeno. 63mph, the comp said, down Bradford Fell, I think, heading towards Clitheroe on a 1999 Haro Vector V1 MTB with knobbly tyres on.
My mate John said that I just disappeared ahead, and he was doing 50.
He called me mad, for some reason . .
I maxed over 60 a few years ago on the way from Princetown to Yelverton and down from Pork Hill on the way down to Tavvy; both times were on my Cannondale CAAD8.
I can't seem to get over 50mph these days; bottle's gone.

Mine was 52mph shortly after my messenger days in Toronto going down into the Don Valley on Danforth
Ave., I hit a bump in a cross wind and moved about 18" to my right and decided that I didn't really need to go that fast in the city where there is traffic much heavier than me and now often on the phone while driving as well. Now I'm old and I'm rebuilding the old 1985 Miyata 310 I was riding that time, great rigid triple butted chromoly frame and with carbon bars, fork and seat post along with a lighter crank and axle I can shave a little weight off of it. Very rigid frame good for 40mph 90 degree corners, you just throw yourself into them! Guess it's an antique now, me too. Now 30mph is as fast as I need to go.

I've been a bit above 80 - I think 82.5 - coming down Norton Summit in the Adelaide Hills, way back in the 1980s. There's a part where you round a corner out of a steep descent and come out of it like a cork out of a bottle. You can then go straight for just long enough to hit some fairly decent speeds, but nothing like these guys. I was also doing that on an old school road bike, of course, and it was plenty fast enough for me. If I'd gone over 100, I think it would have come apart or I'd have rolled a tubular. I remember serious racers at the time talking about their rims getting so hot in some descents that it felt like their tubulars were 'floating' on the rims.

Can confirm that California is a fast place for downhills, 110kph sustained for a minute or more and on a separate ride I had a 134 kph spike, per Garmin. At anything over 100, little things like the wind in your eyes, cross winds or imperfections in the road are magnified by a ridiculous amount. The only real trick is to relax because gripping the bars too tight or body tension will cause the bike to shake. I remember on a time-trail that had a long descent, hitting a bump in the road at over 100kph and losing my grip on the bars luckily, the bump popped me into the air long enough for me to catch the bars before landing.

I believe somewhere in the 60 to 65mph range. Since I've started using the Garmin regularly I've only hit like 55mph, but there were some descents I did back in the day where I know I was going much faster, and based on the fact that I was keeping pace with the cars around me on a 65mph speed limit road that would have to be my best guess. Not really my cup of tea though haha.

I did about 80kph down a pass in Switzerland once as a teenager, I had my jacket fixed to the rear rack of my crappy bike and a car was behind me, when suddenly the sleeve of my jacket dropped down into the rims of my backwheel and blocked the wheel. I somehow managed to avoid falling over whilst skidding and the car just about managed to avoid me. Scariest moment of my life
