- One of the remaining available videos shot of the Plasmatics May 17, 1980 show at the Calderone Theater in Hempstead, LI of an the early Plasmatics classic “Sometimes I (Feel it When You’re Down on Your Knees)”. The show was the second show where Wendy blew up a car on stage (which can be seen to the left under cover behind guitarist Wes Beech). Wendy is seen here wearing her trademark “black electric tape over the nipples” which was copied by so many other female rock performers looking to be cool years and years later. The group had just been signed to Stiff Records in the UK, but had no album out at the time, only a series of original recordings on Vice Squad Records which had been formed by Plasmatics creator Rod Swenson for the sole purpose of getting recordings out before the group had an outside record deal. This song, ´Sometimes I´ appeared on the 3rd of these EPs, the 12” “Meet the Plasmatics” EP which was designed to look like a Japanese import, but was actually produced in Brooklyn, NY.

Wow! Did you know Bob Farina? He was president of the fan club too. As a 7th grader, I used to write them all the time and he would write me back. I met him at the Boulder Theater in Boulder Colorado when they played. I was first in line and front row center for that concert on the Metal Priests tour. Got back stage that night to meet Wendy and my guitar idol Richie Stotts. Wendy gave me a kiss! In 7th grade heaven! My name is Peter Steinhauer. I'm on my wife's UA-cam account.

The sad side to this video is that it was recorded just hours before Ian Curtis took his own life. They both gave some great music to the world .

Historical Context
One of the most powerful and certainly the most disastrous volcanic eruption in American history, Mount St. Helens exploded on the morning of May 18, 1980, killing 57 people and destroying the surrounding area.
The eruption was the culmination of about three months of increasing volcanic activity. Earthquakes and magma reaching the surface of the volcano had created a large bulge on the mountain's side. On May 18, an earthquake caused this bulge to collapse - the largest landslide ever recorded - and an eruption column burst 80,000 feet into the sky.
I’ve seen them like a dozen times back in the day. RIP Wendy.

Idk why I've never looked up plasmatics or Wendy but hot as she is this a great song. I can hear a slow stooges/deadboys vibe but there's a chord in there like a 4 chord (maybe?) that makes it stand out from those bands. Awesome.

Other women who also covered their nipples with tape were NOT copying Wendy or even trying to be cool. Even today nipples are seen as "indecent" so it's a simple way to get away with going topless if you want to. Which is quite freeing. Men go topless all the time without any thought.
