Mexicantown, Detroit
Mexicantown-Southwest Detroit is a down-to-earth neighborhood filled with informal restaurants offering traditional Mexican food, from tamales to tacos. Laid-back bars and tiki lounges serve margaritas; grocery stores brim with corn and plantains; and old-school bakeries sell sugary churros. Family-oriented Clark Park is a popular spot for baseball, while cultural center El Museo del Norte showcases Latino art.
History
Detroit's Mexican population began settling in Mexicantown in the 1920s. The Mexican community established itself on Vernor Street. The community was originally known as "La Bagley". The Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church began holding weekly masses in Spanish by 1969. At one point, the Lithuanian Hall building was renamed the Hispanos Unidos Hall. Waves of immigration came in the 1970s and 1980s, adding to the community. In the late 1980s, the neighborhood was christened "Mexicantown" as part of a public relations campaign. A wave of immigration from Mexico in the 1990s greatly increased the number of Mexicans in Detroit. In one period, Mexicantown's population increased with seasonal immigrations of about 2,000 people, while Detroit as a whole had population decreases. Benedict Carey of The New York Times said that Mexicantown was "on the rise" in 2005.
In December 2012, Ford Motor Company announced that it would open the Ford Resource and Engagement Center in the Mexicantown Mercado facility and spend $10 million to finance the operations of the center. Prior to the Ford center opening, the building was closed.

Why is it so darn clean!? lol! Are sure that's in Detroit?
Thank you for your time. Have a wonderful one
It's close to downtown.
Don't be stupid. Many parts of Detroit are clean and beautiful. Don't be a dummy. I'm pretty sure you're an adult. It shouldn't be hard to think logically.
Contrary to whatever your stupid/bigoted beliefs are Detroit has SEVERAL clean neighborhoods outside of the city center
Being Mexican isn't easy. It's a lot of hard work.
Thank you for your time. Have a wonderful one
3:35 Evie's is the bomb.. love that place.

My God I miss Mr Cordoba and El Zocalo They had the BEST Milenesa el capitalina and flaming cheese WOW Id give a thousand bucks for that recipe! I remember there was a line out the door back in the 1980s. This was the place to eat at in Detroit. Now I live in Edmonton Alberta and they dont have squat out here but curry cookers! Long live the hard working Mexican people and their FABULOUS recipes they have brought us all!
Thank you for your comment and stopping by. Have a wonderful one
Xochi's (Xochimilco) restaurant 2:56 . you still call it 'Xochi's' like we did in the early 80s when we'd stop in for a giant plate of 7-layer super nachos, topped with the 'infamous' carrot slice after a night of downtown debauchery. To the uninitiated, the carrot slice simply appeared like the colorful garnish it was. To an unsuspecting victim? Let's just say, after consuming said garnish, pickled in habanero and jalapeno brine as it was, he/she wouldn't be too quick to eat carrots soon after! LoL
Hello, thank you for your comment and sharing your memories.
Hope all is well. Happy Holidays and all the best in 2022!
Thank you so much!

First time we ever went to Mexicantown
I remember, we couldn't pay the bill, they got hot
And beat us down in the f[___]in' parking lot"
Very nice video. Looks very decent place to be, hard to believe it is in Detroit. Mexicans are very hard working people, maybe that explain the better situation.
Thank you for your time. Have a wonderful one
Detroit is full of hard working people. Don't let the media fool you. There are beautiful neighborhoods all over that you don't see. Boston Edison district, Indian Village, Sherwood Forest, Rosedale Park, Bricktown, Palmer Woods.
@@aaronflowers8881 No, Detroit is not FULL of hard working people. A lot of people living in poor neighborhoods don’t seek for improvements or development but instead of smoking and getting money anyway to buy luxuries that don’t matter such as good looking cars.
@@great-mighty9603 Don't speak on my city. I said Detroit is full of hardworking people and it is. I see it and I know it.
My grandfather on my pops left Mexico in the 1920’s to move to Michigan for GM jobs. My gramps on my moms side left Bastrop, Texas after WWII because of the racism after fighting for his country and they still treated him as a 2nd class citizen and settled in Saginaw, Mi working for GM
👍👍👍 ...from Illinois
