1. Your passion is amazing
2. Your voice is amazing and you should start a podcast
3. You teach through these videos so wonderfully and it’s amazing and enticing and attention holding and amazing.
Wow, your note about how the song ends exactly how it starts is so brilliant, especially when you compare it to Being Alive, which starts so small and ends huge -- both of these mirror Bobby's growth. One is just false growth and circles back around, but the other is true growth. Great analysis!!
ur excitement and genuine passion is what makes these videos worth watching. Keep it up!!!
Awesome analysis! I love these videos very much! Company is my #1 favorite Sondheim musical, if not, my #1 favorite of all. I love talking about the show, and I've always been fascinated by songs like these. Especially this shows' finale song has changed four times. It started with "Marry me a little." For those who didn't know, originally, Bobby would supposed to marry Amy in the finale in Sondheim's demo recording, the original lyrics started with Bobby saying "Someone," then sings the song and instead of "I'm ready now, Someone," it was "I'm ready now, Amy!" Of course the song was removed but complete since at the time it was half done but Judy Prince, fell in love with the piece and he finished it as a gift. eventually having it finally be in another show, "Marry me a little" which was a Sondheim Revue. Along with the other songs, the original drafts still had Bobby marrying Amy and Sondheim eventually wrote "Multitudes of Amys." Eventually they took the idea off and Sondheim wrote the third finale song, "Happily Ever After." That song personally would've been a better choice mainly because of the lyrics and sort of the very honest truth about relationships. Crazy enough the lyrics from Happily Ever After are used in "Being Alive." You can hear a good recording in the "Marry me a little New cast recording" with Jason Tam and Laura Molina. I love that song and is we were very close to getting that song since that song was the intentional finale song and was performed in previews before it went to Broadway. Unfortunately this song might have been the reason the show got that infamous review saying "the show is for only old women and f*gs." Hal eventually said it's too dark for the show. It's crazy since there's also a draft where Bobby is sobbing in a park after the song and the cast are nearby him. Eventually we finally got the song, Being Alive. It's one of my favorite trivia history to talk about.
I had very little appreciation for Sondheim before going into this and our class is doing a Sondheim unit. You really instilled in me an appreciation for his music with this video. You’ve also given so much for anyone trying to perform this song to go off off. I’ll never listen to those chords in Being Alive the same again. Such a great analysis, thank you!
I could never quite connect to Sondheim's sound, Company and Into the Woods are the only musicals of his I sing along to, but I'm still very much in awe of him and his craftsmenship. The way he constructs songs and ties them together throughout the story is so thought out and mathmatical and yet feels so natural it's almost invisible! His work totally deserves to be studied
Wonderful Concept of the Song ---- I always saw it as the 1st half as him almost cynically justifying the things he hates about marriage - and the 2nd half as a realization of what he may want from someone in marriage - exactly what he has been fighting all along. It's the same thing in Being Alive (Part 1 being what he doesnt want and Part 2 a FULL REALIZING of what he didn't want is what he actually wants from Someone/Somebody/Marriage)
HI Mateo, I loved this deconstruction. I've just seen the London production of Company where Bobbi is female and it adds a whole other dimension to the show.
I literally flew across the world for that show!
THANK YOU so much for that analysis ! I saw this show on april /2022 and cryied a lot listening that song .... I live in Brazil and love BROADWAY SHOWS !
I haven't heard anyone else say this, but i think "company" has a third meaning right off the bat. "Company" as in guests. And, Bobby not wanting a surprise birthday party, the guests are unwanted as well. Mateo - dude - WONDERFUL voice as well as musicianship - playing and theory. Loved it.
I’ve just finished watching all your analysis videos and it’s so fun to fall even more in love with some of my favorite songs, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and passion! I’d really like to see No One Else from Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812!
Mateo, you've drawn me to tears with your superb explanation, your total analysis of this particular song and your amazing musical skills. You're a genius!!!
I love you so much!!! Your analysis is spot on and has helped me tremendously. I am singing this song as an opener and understanding the mindset of Bobby is key. Thank you thank you!
I really like watching these videos then listening to the songs you analyze. Adds so much more when I first hear the songs.
I could listen to you do this all day💕
What an interesting analysis! I first saw and fell in love with this show watching a National Tour in the early 1970s in the early years of my 49 year marriage, so until recently I had never heard Marry Me a Little. Although nowhere as in depth as yours, my reaction to the language of the lyrics was similar to yours, when I went searching to see if anyone else had a similar interpretation. You are very talented and I suspect Mr Sondheim would have enjoyed your passion for his work.
i was looking for performances of this song i hadn't seen yet and ended up finding this video, i absolutely love the analysis! there's so much that can be said about each song in this show, it's why i an never get tired of it
Just now discovered your channel but I LOVE talking and interpreting about musical songs, after having an education in music aswell.
The first time I heard this song was Aaron Tveit singing it and he made me believe it was the perfect yearning/love song (because duh, it's Aaron) but as you're explaining here aswell, it isn't at all in the story. And the way you point out the chords where he was scared OMG
Just- ugh love this. ❤️
Wow. I just watched NPH version Then saw this song by Raul Esparza.
YOU have made this song so present for me. Your passion and desire to bring your pupils into your sphere of knowledge is ...So Inspired.
During Pandenic ..our minds seek nourishment- which you provide.
Many sincere thanks.
This is such a phenomenal analysis from so many different directions! I thought I knew everything there was to know about this song but wow, I learned so much from the accompaniment that I'd never even noticed before. Thanks so much for this!
Mateo, This is the first of your videos I've seen and I'm beyond happy that I found it/you. You are obviously a delightful and very multi-talented man in your own right. I especially appreciate this one as "Company" has always been my favorite Sondheim show if not absolute favorite of all. After seeing Aaron Tveit's delivery of this song on Steven Sondheim's 90th Birthday tribute, "Take Me To The World", I haven't been able to get it out of my head. When I mentioned this to a client who is a deeply romantic person, they replied, "That's a very sad song." I am not proud to admit that I hadn't looked far enough into the song to realize that. I want to share your amazing, deeply insightful, and generous analysis here with him. Thank you for this.
Former Bobby here-- great breakdown (and voice! Wish my A was that effortless!). I really enjoyed the arc from "Someone is Waiting," through this song, and then "Being Alive." I still do this song in cabaret, and your analysis will help me do it better next time. Thanks!! BTW, do you know "Multitudes of Amy's" and/or "Happily Ever After" -- two other songs Sondheim wrote as finales before tossing them out? I love both-- the first for the emotion, the second for the way he uses the same lyrics from "Being Alive" to come to a conclusion 180 degrees different. Brilliant- thanks again :)
Could you do one of these videos but about Sunday in the park with George?
I didn´t know you channel until this video, but wow, what a video! Your analysis is great. Do more!
I know you haven’t done one of these in a while, but these breakdowns are so wonderful and educational for theatre people. I really hope we can see more of these!!
So, happy I found this; and you. Better late than never. So glad "Being Alive" got honorable mentions throughout.
P.S. I bet everyone who watches this wishes you would marry them a little. 😉
YES you're back!!! I love your analysis videos!!!!!!
Lovely video, you really hit the core of Sondheim's work and just the pure, raw emotion behind it. Will definitely be checking out more of your videos
YAY I just rewatch your 'If I didn't Believe in You' recently and thought you quit doing analysis video. Any plan for next video? I'd love to see you do anything from Dogfight, Bare, Into the Woods, Song for a New World.
Woah im so glad i found this channel - thanks for this, love it!
This was so enjoyable to watch! I love this show, especially the 2006 cast 🥰
This is an amazing analysis. I've always been captivated by "Marry me a little" and now I appreciate it even more. But really, your passionate delivery takes it even a notch higher.
Adrian Lester just completey blows me away with his brilliant acting as Bobby. Never saw the production in 1996 at the Donmar Warehouse, but wish I had. That said though, it brings me to sheer tears watching Adrian Lester. Absolutely amazing actor he really is!!!!!!
You're brilliant.
I love this video so much! And I love this song so much too! Gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it ☺️🥰
I'm about to play Bobby in a UK production of Company and this is SO helpful wow you're amazing
I’ve been checking back every month or so to see if you’d bring these back! It’s so interesting to see someone else’s breakdown of songs I love. I actually saw the gender-swapped production of company on the West End a couple of nights ago so I’ve been re-visiting the show :)
This is brilliant! Such an interesting explanation, and your passion when speaking is contagious! I recently discovered “Company” and it quickly became one of my favourite musicals. Sondheim really is a genius. Thank you for your passion and keep up the good work!
Brilliant! I could watch you deconstruct songs all day. You bring such insight it is just thrilling. I don't think I could have understood it so well if I had played Bobby myself!
This is such a brilliant video! Keep up the good work!!
Thanks. Love the analysis and your enthsiasm...so glad I found this. My friends joke that in lockdown I am doing my remedial Sondheim studies that as a gay baby boomer I missed back in the 80s and 90s
Absolutely amazing. Thank you for share it.
I love these!! Can u do one on a song from Cabaret the musical?
Posted a cover of this on YT and now I’m only seeing this.
Thank you so much for this! I'm doing this song for my voice lessons and this has really helped me understand this song better!
Loved this. Thanks!
I love your analysis videos! If you ever need any ideas, I would enjoy seeing an analysis of Stay With Me from Into the Woods or Nobody Needs to Know from The Last Five Years!
Genius! I would love to see you analyze Not a Day Goes By from my favorite Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along
this videos are sooo great u should come back to posting these analysis!!! so much love
I subscribed just in time! :)
I'd have to agree with you -COMPANY is the best Broadway musical I've ever seen. i was lucky enough to see patrick cassidy star as bobby with carol burnett as joanne in the1993 revival in los angeles. first time i'd heard "marry me a little" in the show since i had only listened to the original cast soundtrack which it was cut from for obvious reasons. your love for the material is palpable and infectious. looking forward to discovering more of your in depth commentary, lovely keyboard playing and terrific voice!
I love your analysis videos so much that I’m watching this even though I don’t know the musical (will deffo listen now though)
There're 2 versions of Company on UA-cam. One with Neil Patrick Harris and the other one with Raul Esparza. It's really great and funny show.
ugh thank you!
I love your analysis! Are u planning to do more of this?
I'd love to hear your take on "Far From the Home I Love"
iconic
I cant help but admire your low notes quite impressive for a tenorish voice.
