That is so neat , i learnt in an 1954 c.170. When i first flew an 185 , absolutely loved the grunt. I would love to spend time sitting in the right hand seat while you flew into these places.
Yeah they are in the RP. You're correct that they are 100% visual, no flight plans, no nav aids etc. It's old school VFR. Because we're in the mountains and usually well below the terrain we don't go IMC enroute or on approach. Staying VFR in deteriorating tropical weather is by far the most challenging part of the flights. It takes some pretty good knowledge of the terrain, weather patterns and experience flying clear of clouds. It's a lot of fun but gets stressful at times.
It's a standard IO-520 with a three blade prop (not the 86" Black Mac). So standard in the power department. We have the Robertson drooping aileron STC, a Sportsman leading edge, ART wing tip extensions and VGs on the wings.
@dondycluck We use GPS supported by sectionals and knowledge of the area. A new pilot is required to do a thorough checkout before he can fly here. It's often in marginal weather in the mountains so you have to always know where you are (especially if the GPS fails) and how you can get yourself out of it if the need arises.
@axs12345 I couldn't agree more about the benefits of big tires. The bottom line is that we don't have the money to do it just yet, but it's on the list of mods to add. It will save money in the long run too cause of less shock at the gear attach points. Trust me, the day I can put bigger tires on, I will. For now, the tires digging into the mud on landing actually helps get the plane stopped, and soft field takeoff technique keeps it floating just enough for a good takeoff.
I used to do that in the Central African Republic and on takeoff I prayed my engine did not even skip a beat...!!! I did 50 hr inspections every 25 hrs and 100 hr inspections every 50 hrs... on the engine, not airframe... it got its usual...!!!
@kenjordans As you approach and fly past/over the ridges, your actual height above the ground is always changing. Sometimes you are 2000' above ground, sometimes 10.' However, the height you are concerned about is only the height above the touchdown zone. In addition to all that, the first half of the runway is significantly downhill so a normal approach looks like you're too low when in fact you're angle is right on. You have to use creative cues to help overcome the illusions.
After talking about this video with some guys in my squadron we were curious about your flights. This looks to be somewhere in southeast Asia, I'm guessing the Philippines. Do you file flight plans at all? How are the approaches flown? GPS? Sectionals? 100% visually? There can't be any nav aids in such remote places like that.
why dont you get bigger weels like they use in alaska they float better on the mud and you get more lift under wing in take off meaning you can take off in shorter fields and land in shorter fields but nice terrain and good flying
Great bushflying vídeo. Thanks. As far as I understand, you work - or have been working - in Philippines for NTM (News Tribes Mission). Am I correct? Where has this video been shot, exactly? Do you fly only Cessna 185 or NTM fleet includes other aircrafts?
Yea the big contis are cool , not so keen on the small ones like 0200 , 0300. In fact the lyc 0235 really makes the 0200 look so old. Also like lyc io540
Of course $1000 would help! We're a non-profit organization that operates off of donations so ultimately the funds would need to come from donors. We are trying to save money for mods out of our flight hour billing, but it's a bit slow going.
I had a former NTM flyer instruct me in the 185. He was truly a master at his craft and an excellent teacher.
Creativity is not something I thought would be required in bush flying. Being wrong could have major consequences! Thanks for all you do out there!
I'm a 5.5K hour pilot form cloud covered Ballarat Victoria Australia, so take it from someone who know..... your got big balls man .... You rock !
Fantastic Video bbpruett, you make difficult flying look easy. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. May God continue to be your co-pilot.
Reminds me a lot of the series "Where not to be a pilot" in Indonesia. Really cool footage and great flying!
Awesome flying!
You’ve got a lot of sub, nice oh and great vids

Great work. I used to deliver C180's, 185's and 188's from Wichita to all over. I miss that fun job.
That was some gutsy flying sir, that mud bath and tail wheel shimmying just some of the dangers, many thanks for this insight into your daily work.
Been to this one in the Helio too! Airdropped supplies at the village across the river for months until the airstrip was ready for service.
WHAT AN AMAZING FLYING SKILLS 😊
Came from the IH8mud forums. Nice flying and thanks for the Prado weight data.
And to think I ever used to say trapping on the boat was hard. Those are some damn hard looking approaches.

Great pilot skills and very hard work went on to make this video look great , thanks for the video .

Bold method had found your video. Let's the views skyrocket!
Legal esse vídeo a visão em geral, só um lugar de difícil acesso.

Solid flying mate
Not too much room for error. Very well done.
Awesome ,consistent flying... made possible by CESSNA /Continental and McCauley...!!!

To applaud the pilots who land there, there are lots of guts, risk their lives.

Can you share the location of this strip?
what s the name of the airstrip? wanna do this in msfs 2020
Wow amazing,from indonesia
Looks like typicsl MAF landing. Front gear only. Thats how you do it!
It's my dream to fly over a tropical jungle at dawn...
Impresionante el riesgo de experimentar un paro de motor. Felicidades al piloto!!
Thanks.

Amazing video!
Also wondering if you have ever been caught in IMC while flying those approaches.
This awesome. Hey, upload some stick movements.
Nice, almost touch belly, if it was a 2 blade prop, it would be worst ah?
They are tough indeed, but at least they aren't moving.

genia !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Should install that ALASKAN EXTRA WIDE TUNDRA TAIL WHEEL...!!!
Awesome Brian! MOst interesting takeoff/landing sequence I have seen. What was the optical illusion from?

Did the wheel bend at 4:20?
Because the wheel got high

Skillful flying, that mud is no joke to handle as for the weather, how do you even find these airstrips ?
Very well done! Good old Continentals, as long as they're not GTSIO520Ms.

I’d have a SIGNAL GENERATOR installed on that air station so I could navigate through all that nasty cloud stuff...!!!
very Rangerios.....
AL pie de la butaca..!!!
That's awesome!
Thomas Zhang
Impresionante en toda la expresión de la palabra!!!
Could you please state the exact location if possible ?? Thanks :)
I see Wing-X extensions.
Is the plane a standard 185, or do you have a more powerful engine installed?
how can i dolnate
impressive
1:29 that short engine cho.. wtf
Insane
are you from maf
post more videos soon!!
Top...
What tribe? Looks familiar. Can PM me if there would be a problem with saying names. :)
Jesus...
I half expected to see a pterodactyl fly across in front of him after he took off.
nice
Crazy
I hope you keep your insurance paid up..!
Be safe up there.
insurance doesn't cover that xD just liability
Lotsa fl-un ;)
Are you a Pliot/Engineer?
No tail wheel deserves this kind of abuse.😝
You can get a 310 in there no problem...🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s a short airstrip
will 1000 dollars help
Draw near to The Lord and He will draw near to you. Don't think my Cherokee 140 could do that. There are easier ways to get close to God (:)).
