      Well, the Tesla and other EVs can be charged at home with almost no capital cost, meaning you rarely need to visit any public charging infrastructure unless you drive a lot. Home electrolysis hydrogen filling stations could be a thing, but they are expensive (home BEV charging stations are cheap). And a home filling station would use about three times the energy to drive the same distance as in a BEV. Hydrogen seems to only make sense in larger vehicles like trucks, ships, trains, etc

    • @meelo4597
      @meelo4597 6 років тому +11

      Siggen Yeah but the problem is charging times, when you drive a tesla you cant go OH CRAP and frantically drift into a gas station and be on your way in 2-5 minutes.

    • @SuperSiggiboy
      @SuperSiggiboy 6 років тому +3

      MEELO925 If I really go "oh crap", I can plug in for 5-10 minutes and have enough juice to get anywhere, there are fast chargers everywhere around here (Norway), so long road trips are no big problem, even with the tiny 30 kWh battery of the Leaf. And with bigger batteries like the 100 kWh in Teslas, it really is no problem at all. And the car is usually always charged up and ready to go at home, so there is no need to ever need to use public charging to sustain a daily commute, that will certainly save you some time in the long run

    • @Bryan46162
      @Bryan46162 6 років тому +4

      Again, that's a problem you DON'T HAVE since your car charges EVERY NIGHT in your garage. Why would you buy a vehicle that you need to go take time out of your day to make a special trip somewhere and buy expensive fuel? The only time that even starts to become an annoyance is when you're driving more than 500km straight. Even then, it's not a huge issue since:
      1. A 15 minute stop at a supercharger can get your Tesla an additional 200km. So 700km range (7hours of driving) with a 15min stop in the middle? How many people is that actually a dealbreaker for?
      2. Even in areas that have absolutely NO OFFICIAL EV infrastructure, you can still charge an EV if there is any form of electricity.
      3. If companies like Porche are to be believed, their EVs WILL charge in 5 minutes flat.
      4. According to green car reports, the #1 issue the very few people who own H2 vehicles have with those vehicles is that they can take HOURS to fill even when you can find a hydrogen station if you're unlucky enough to arrive just after another has filled and depleted the stockpile of hydrogen. The #2 issue is when you pull into the ONLY hydrogen station around and it's BROKEN, which leaves your $50,000 car SOL.
      5. You CAN'T make any kind long drive in a hydrogen vehicle since THERE IS NO INFRASTRUCTURE TO REFUEL YOUR CAR AT ALL. You're criticizing EV's for taking too long to do something that cannot even be ATTEMPTED in a hydrogen car. If you're assuming that the infrastructure will be built eventually, think again. A single H2 pump cost over $2M to install. Who is going to build all these stations when BEV's sales are exploding and dedicated high voltage charge points only cost a few hundred dollars to install?
      Back in the '90s hydrogen cars made sense. Today, the idea of buying a hydrogen car is the equivalent to buying a betamax after it was clear VHS had won the format war. Sure, the technology does work but you're not going to be able to do much with it and for what you can do, it is EXPENSIVE.
      Hydrogen may have a place in the grid energy storage world, or in big commercial vehicles but unless it can figure out how to handle the conversions between hydrogen and electricity more efficiently, it's going to have it's lunch eaten by flow batteries there too.

    I wish hydrogen fuel cell cars were more readily available throughout the UK. Their are only about 3 hydrogen models available here and most hydrogen fuel filling stations are in the south east of England.
    I would like to see some of these car manufacturers offer a service to convert a petrol or diesel engined car to a hydrogen fuel celled car. That might be more cost effective compared to manufacturing an entire new car. This would help drive the demand for hydrogen which would then eventually drive demand for brand new cars to be hydrogen fuel celled cars.
    Hydrogen fuel would have to be made more readily available throughout the UK as the demand increases.
    I for one would love to own a hydrogen fuel celled car and I would be happy to recommend anybody to have one.

    Just a mention i have here. A lot of people in the comments saying that it's very difficult to find hydrogen stations, it's expensive as fuel, the car with hydrogen motors are expensive 50.000 dollars the specific car of the review and that it's easier to charge an ev in your house. OK all good here. When it came out the first tesla remember someone of you guys? 2008 so we have the first production of ev before 11 years. In greece let's say for example they have 3 or 5 stations for charging your tesla. In Germany we have some more but still not easy to charge because they are not everywhere chargers and also all the people they don't have garage to charge the ev in their house. How many electric charging stations was back in 2008? Last mention the car of the review costs 50.000 dollars and i'm pretty sure it's not the basic model, how does it cost a tesla? 85.000 dollars the cheapest version and it can come to 135. So my conclusion is don't blame the new technologiy. The best for as is to have more options and if it's better for the environment or cheaper why not? Why all of you are so negative in something new i cant understand.

  • @kdrgaming3344

    It's quite naive to say that just because hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe that it's obvious we should use it as a fuel source. It's only abundant on Earth in the form of water. And you need to split the hydrogen from the water in order to use it in fuel cells. And that's the main problem. There are many problems with hydrogen, but the main problem is that it's terribly inefficient to split hydrogen from water to then use to power vehicles. Normal battery-powered vehicles are much more efficient and viable.

    • @xCptLegendx

    after watching a documentary of how EV car batteries are made, seems to me that toyota made the best choice (one more time) on how to move forward of fossil fuels.In a decade or maybe earlier, the cost to build a battery car due to lack of lithium, cobalt and nickel required for its batteries will be extremely high, but investing in an actually endless fuel as hydrogen( which by the way is not wasted during the operation but simply turned into water) is the only way to move along, dont forget that instead of private cars sector, there so many other sectors that this technology can be used, even ships can generate their own fuel while at sea by pumping and electrolysing hydrogen, well done toyota!!!!!!

    If you thought about it for a second, there are more sources of Hydrogen then the ones you pointed out. You just need a device to pump it into the vehicle (this device if installed in the vehicle rather than the refilling station would allow you to recharge from any low pressure storage bottle. Alternatively, a standalone unit could be carried in times where re-filling from a low pressure bottle is expected.
    Lastly: Massive advancements are being made in the Hydrogen production process
    that will greatly improve the energy efficiency of the process making it a much more cost effective and highly feasible to do on a house hold level. The house could be run on hydrogen from a unit consisting of a Hydrogen generator(s), reservoir and a storage tank for vehicular use.
    U nearly convinced me your advocation of EV’s is actually a review of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell car. Nearly....
    Why are you reviewing the infrastructure? Of course its not at EV level, thats because the UN council want to move away from dependance on foreign oil but still want centralised control of the energy source and EV is the logical choice...
    If you were being fair you would compare the implications of running out of energy in an inconvenient location in both vehicles. Conceptually, u can refill your Hydrogen car from a portable tank and pump in the space of minutes, not so in EV car.... U would compare the implications of long haul trips in both cars. Hydrogen car is the same as a conventional car, EV takes a liiittle longer (fast charge options are available but these are not good for battery longevity whatsoever)
    U would compare the ability to produce its energy source from home. EV car requires means of charging a storage battery of equivalent Amp hours, (big.... And thats 1 spare charge per battery equivalence) Hydrogen car requires means of powering a device that produces Hydrogen and a means of storing it safely and a means of re-filling your car. ADDITIONALLY, a spare tank and pump (or interchangeable tank incorporated into car design) could be carried for longer trips, doubling or tripling your range.
    AND you (every EV advocator) neglects to mention the materials required to manufacture these batteries and the need to dispose of them correctly at end of its lifespan. (Many forms of lithium Ion batteries but the most energy dense material used along side the Lithium is also the most toxic, so it is often used as a means to save costs)
    And what is powering the recharge stations? Fossil fuel will still be required to a degree but will not be require the complex transport network to refill the fuel stations.
    At the end of the day though. Only focusing on costs is extremely shortsighted.

    But what about the longevity of the rechargeable batteries? Don't they die after about 500-600 charging cycles? Will they last 2 years of daily use? Are the batteries not very expensive to replace? How long does it take to charge the batteries? As for station costs, say a $1 million hydrogen station can fully fuel in 5 min per car, so 60 / 5 = 12 cars per hour. If it takes say, 3 hours/car for a battery fully charge and to effectively serve 12 cars per hour, you would need 36 chargers so cost is 36 * 15,000. = 540,,000. Add to that, real estate costs, waiting room facilities, and value of your time. Seems cost of an electric station are comparable if not more. Blazing Dumpster first off your logical is flawed. It takes about 45 minutes at a Tesla supercharger to get more range the this crappy hydrogen car does. Also people have driven EVs 100,000+ miles and only lost 4-5 miles or range, the way batteries degrade is a lot at first and then they level at and take a long time to degrade. Also what do we know about hydrogen, after till will it wear away something in the car because of how cold it is. What happens if a part gets very brittle from the cold and the 10,000 PSI shoots back at you.

      Fuel cells degrade quickly and require replacement in 3-5 years at a comparable cost to replacing an EV battery pack. So to do their storage tanks. Hence why most lease terms offered are 3 years... Also, you're way off on your pack degradation rates. Tesla packs are now observed in the real world to last minimum 3000 charge cycles until only 80% capacity remains. This equates to about 15 years of driving for the average person. Could easily have to rebuild a gas engine twice before replacing your battery pack.

    I don't see much of a future in commuter vehicles for hydrogen, it's well to wheel efficiency is pretty bad compared to battery electric vehicles. It was a clever idea for a stopgap to lacking battery technology, but now batteries are catching up and going down in price, so it just doesn't make a lot of sense to take electricity to produce hydrogen for the hydrogen to be used to produce electricity, why not just run the car on stored electricity and cut out the middle man? But with that said, there is some impressive potential for industrial vehicles. I think Tesla's truck will be a bit of a market flop (way too heavy), so hydrogen seems like it would be a good alternative for semi trucks and large industrial machinery.

Imagine having to plug in 1-5 cars for hours while trying to get your AC to work? Now take 2.5 of those cars and multiply it by one block and tell me if you think our infrastructure is anywhere close to being able handle that much usage. @@LawrenceRhodes ah,yes. Let's compare new tech against something that was mainstream in 2008. Look, it's all down to personal preference. It is a fact that batteries and electric cars in general pollute when made. Batteries do last longer than fuel cells,but fuel cells are a new thing. We have to wait and see in the future,but batteries won't be as good as fuel cells as they are heavy and can't hold as much energy (and the charging time is atrocious) as fuel cells. The fact that the "almighty Elon" said that his business's main competitor is stupid just shows how good of a business man he is. If Teslas ran on hydrogen,he would say that batteries are stupid. That is how a good business man works, someone will become competitive and can reduce my profits,bash on his tech and say it is stupid,and every person that is an Elon fanboy will listen,thus reducing the cars bought,thus killing the Earth as you need to drive 80 000 km on 100% clean energy JUST to become pollution neutral. Hydrogen cars are automatically neutral as they can turn CH4 into C02 (CH4 is 21x worse when it comes to greenhouse gases) so it actually cleans the earth from CH4. If using electrolysis it is as clean as the electricity (if it's green,the car is green. The same works with BEVs). Jet engines destroy the O3 layer,good luck getting electric planes with batteries,as batteries pollute when made and are heavy. H2 planes can easily be made.
