  • Chatterley Whitfield Colliery is a disused coal mine on the outskirts of Chell, Staffordshire in Stoke on Trent. It was the largest mine working the North Staffordshire Coalfield and was the first colliery in the UK to produce 1,000,000 tons of saleable coal in a year

I hope they can get the funds to preserve this pit if it's still there as it was a great part of mining history of the area .Good video man

It needs preserving for the future so that children feel and touch

Should be preserved. Went down the mine when it was a museum think it was about 700ft in those small cages shown at the start. At the very least those wonderful winding engines and cable drum should be saved.

They used to show people how mines worked back in the day I believe and that's what the drift mock up was .

Coming from a mining and quarrying family and having spent 45 years in transport and engineering I would advise anyone to be extremely careful in and nesr these redundant industrial sites. There are many hidden dangers. I followed in the footsteps of most of my relatives in South Wales , North staffordshire and Lancashire and Yorkshire in what are commonly seen as hazardous industries and occupations. I was lucky. I made it to retirement. Others were not so lucky!

Used to play up there as a kid I still live in fegg hayes to and walk past it everyday with my dog. They also did the loyds banking with the black horse advert up there in 2018 I think

Shame to see the place falling to bits. After it closed as a colliery in 1976, it was a great mining museum. I went on one of the tours down the 700ft pit when I was a kid, down in one of the cages with the brickwork rushing by and our ears popping, wearing a helmet with a light and carrying a self-rescuer. Amazing to think you could do that. One of the older mine shafts there was 2000ft deep.

It’s hard to believe how clean the engine houses were at pits, honestly you could eat ya bait off the floor in those places. Wouldn’t think it to look at that place now, what a shame, needs saving especially that steam powered winder.

Great video mate. It's really sad to see how it has been left to rot. I hope someday the funds become available to restore the colliery or at least part of it for people to view and learn more about our history.

Brings back some memories, I remember when the visitor centre was open, think it was about 19 86 ish they did trips down the mine. I've even still got the sticker of proof.
