Great job! Your info is the best scoop yet on Ionna! Thank you! Hopefully this will ramp up fast. Doesn't look like they are going to have the big splash before the end of the year like they initially announced. Glad to hear something is starting to happen. Ionna needs to step up their social media and start telling their story.
Cheers! I suspect they're planning a regular drumbeat of news now through Q4, possibly culminating in a grand opening before year-end (or very early 2025). Expecting to see Alpitronic officially announced in the next week or two, followed by new site confirmations and some distinction in site types: "Charging Hubs" vs. "Metro Rechargeries", perhaps. They're developing some interesting style and symbolism, from a promotional perspective, so I think it just comes down to timing and what they're able to officially share.
Yep, it's a promising start but time to move beyond the press releases now... usual suspects as early locations, which probably means New England will see IONNA action in about 2028!👀
Timely report & love the completeness of your presentations. Exciting times to see them start to stretch their wings finally. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching.
The address for the Ionna in Corsicana TX looks like on Google Maps to be in the parking lot of a Pilot FlyingJ Travel Center. Interesting given the EVgo relationship.
@@plugandplayEV ...Actually, I am seeing the address on the permit to be an open field at 235, but the address of the Pilot dealer is 4750 S. Interstate Hwy 45 West. I find that to be too much of a coincidence so will keep the PIP in place to see what comes of it., unless you feel otherwise.
Thanks for the video. Frankly, I'm (pleasantly) surprised at the speed they're doing this. Most times, a consortium like this has trouble getting things started. You probably know by now that Walter did a video on the Apex, NC site.
Yeah, I'm excited that there's one close to the HQ and within Walter's reach for the channel. Eager to see turnaround time and, eventually, see what News Coulomb Site Score he'll award.
That's what it all comes down to: consistently reliable charging, in convenient locations with appropriate amenities. And an entire industry watching... no pressure!
Good to see them getting off the ground. I'll be more interested once they start to fill in areas that don't already have alternatives. Of course more handles is going to help with peak capacity and turn-over.
Well, that could save me the better part of 400 miles travel, thanks! Don't see any network listed but the location is in Plugshare, so I'll do some permit Googling around that. Thanks again for the heads up!
I'm excited about it. This is what EV charging should look like. I like the idea of Rove charging stations a little more because they have a combination of different types of chargers and more of them....but I love the direction it's going!
Certainly having Owl and the Hyperchargers is promising. I am still hesitant until I see sites opening in a fairly quick succession. Also, I am not aware of the Hyperchargers being used in warm climates like California and Texas so I’m very curious to see how resilient they are in those environments.
Great point. I'm sure southern Europe (they're based in Italy) gets more taxing temperatures, but nothing on the scale of North American desert conditions. That said, their proving process appears to be rigorous and they have US-based expertise, so it would be surprising if excessive heat hasn't been fully tested.
Love this. The link to metro transit (where it exists) also fascinates me. Many of these early sites serve metro locations that would potentially benefit all kinds of electric transport and attract new customers with suggestions like yours.
L2 , especially 48amp+ would be great for non fast charging cars and topping off, or anytime someone wants a little boost and has time. Doesn't make sense to wait in line to fast charge when you could be AC charging
All I know is that you will 99.9% sure be before Massachusetts... I think they're all scarred by the fact that EA started here and assume we're cursed. Here's hoping they convert one of those old Western ghost towns for your first. Seems like a fitting spot for a Rechargery, no?
Awesome! I'm in Pickerington OH, on the south side of I70 - just 5 minutes away from Reynoldsburg. I look forward to watching this Ionna site get built out. Steve, would you happen to have the address or street name in Reynoldsburg for the site?
Great to hear! It's at 2727 Brice Rd, Reynoldsburg, OH 43068. If there's anything interesting going on when you visit, I'll gratefully receive photos via plugandplayev@gmail.com :-)
@@plugandplayEV Will do Steve! I did find the future Reynoldsburg OH location on Brice rd., south of I70. It has a car wash to the south and a Waffle House to the north. I'll get some pics this weekend, then provide additional pics through the progression. The existing bldg for the CNG business looks to be in good shape. I'm not sure whether or not Ionna will try to standardize their facilities, or use a combination of new construction plus existing facilities. The site is about 1/2 mile off of I70, so it should easy enough to get to. In contrasting the Ionna approach with that of Pilot Flying J, however, the PFJ's are visible from the highway and are easily accessible. They also have a consistent appearance and a convenient store / restroom facility. There would be a lot of utility in having consistent amenities among the Ionna sites. In any event it will be great having access to 30,000 new DCFC's
The biggest delay will likely be with transformers and local electrical utilities. I really hope Ionna was able to procure a lot of transformers or fast-track with the electric utility.
True. Hopefully with so many corporate benefactors filing their coffers, IONNA will have the funds and sway to secure the hardware and capacity they need.
Great update thanks. While more DCFC stalls is a good thing (quantity), the more important aspect is their quality. I hope this is a huge success, but I am always cautious of "committee" work. Trying to get 8 big companies to agree and make good decisions is tough. I would suggest another perspective when reviewing any new non-Tesla charging sites- what are their goals relative to Tesla supercharger charging experience, and how do they plan to achieve the goals? I am NOT a Tesla owner but have two EV's- one that is NACS capable. My east coast CCS experience is terrible 46% of my charging sessions have issues. My early Tesla experience is ZERO issues so far. And their density provides a much more predictable availability. So how will IONNA deliver an experience as GOOD as Tesla? IMO most of this has little to do with construction (a one time event hopefully) but with management, service, monitoring, app, billing, etc.
I’m excited to see Ionna break ground in Apex and others coming soon. I think they’ll be quite the player in the U.S. charging scene. I especially like seeing them converting old gas stations to EV charging locations.
The symbolism is great, but I wonder if there's also a cost component? Existing structure just gets a lick of paint, new signage, and provides a secure place for vending machines. Could be quite cost-effective compared to a dedicated new structure. Bathrooms aren't quite as easy, I suppose, but it's interesting to compare the existing site to the render and see how close the structures are.
The ROVE site toured by Mach-E Vlog got me thinking: in metro areas, these might not need to rely solely on EV charging customers for retail custom. If you think about c-stores, it's becoming much more than a gas station. Chains like Sheetz/Wawa over here and Kwik Trip/Casey's in the middle of the country have loyal followings based on food/snack/grocery offerings. Not saying that IONNA will be able to service that model but there's no reason that an EV charging site in a highly visible location couldn't appeal to a broader audience.

You've filled in many of the blanks for me with IONNA! Looking good. Can't wait for this network to rollout nationwide.

I'm seeing IONNA at exit 235B but not seeing a Pilot there... one at exit 227 though. Is that the one you're referring to?

For sure. Metro charging and additional redundancy is nice, but filling gaps or bolstering extremely limited locations is a priority.
If you are passing near Scranton. IONNA is pretty far along with what I believe is a ten stall at the Dickson City PA Sheetz.

A back in 10 stall, I guess, is not as photogenic for a press release. Conduit appears to be all in.
Can you post pictures of the site in progress?

Just took pics of Apex site today. Mix of ccs and nacs crated alpitronics are on site. Pedestal conduit is in the ground and close to pouring
I don’t see how 10 stalls supports a staffed C-store location, especially if it’s not along a high-traffic travel corridor.
