Great episode, well done Andrew for securing that interview with Sainsbury smart charge product director - very knowledgeable chap. I'd second other suggestions to add the network to the Octopus Electroverse app. Good to see the Nectar points bonus. Hope they'll start to offer xx pence off charging with Nectar in the same way they do for their petrol stations: as a Sainsbury's shopper and an EV driver of nearly 7 years, it's always slightly riled me when the 10p-off-a-litre-of-fuel chitty is printed out at the checkout
We visit Norfolk on holiday and usually stop at the Sainsburys in Kings Lynn as it's normally lunch time and a good place to stop, eat and pick up bits for the holiday ahead. We used their new chargers recently and they were fantastic. Great to see a supermarket leading the way
Really enjoyed this interview and encouraged by Richard who is clearly the sort of person you want rolling this out. Government need to sort DNO and planning constraints and make the VAT 5% ASAP in my view. They also should have removed the five pence freeze on fuel duty at the last budget instead of increasing bus fares. As a result of watching this I am now planning to visit a Sainsbury’s Smart Charge this weekend when driving from Kent to North Wales as it is fast and likely to be operating along with chance for a break in the shop. 👍
Great that Sainsbury's have taken the initiative. My area is a bit poor for public charging so if the main Sainsbury's here pur 8 or 10 reliable chargers in it would make a difference. 75p isn't going to encourage people who can't charge ar home. The government needs to change the taxation regime to make sure public charging is cheaper than petrol or diesel.
This type of facility is ideal for those that can’t charge at home or for people travelling on holiday where they can’t charge at their destination. Well done Sainsbury’s.
Fantastic to see a supermarket take the initiative. Very poor parking in the background! But very pleasing to see someone wearing denim, green and brown. Quite the fashion statement!!
All round great episode. Really natural. Great questions. Great quality. Great editing. Great machines. Great news that one of the major supermarkets are taking this seriously, but I'm surprised and disappointed that they aren't offering some good discounts if you spend more than say £50 in store. It seems like they are using the petrol station model of being in-line with the prices of the competition, the difference with Electricity is that most of us have access to it at home a lot cheaper, unlike petrol!
Bravo Sainsbury's for planning for the future now and to Mr. EV for making this video. Just 2 questions I'd like to have seen asked: Q1. What is Sainsbury's policy on combustion engine vehicles using the bays to park and EVs using the bays for parking but deliberately not plugging in? Q2. Can EV drivers park to charge outside of store opening hours without receiving a Parking Charge Notice?
Excellent questions. The number of EV charging bays that are ICE'd at my local shopping centre is horrendous, often 50% or more spaces are taken up by ICE vehicles or by EVs not plugged in.

Excellent video thanks. So refreshing to have a company representative who actually knows his subject. I have to say the only site I’ve witnessed is Christchurch which was set up but not working for many months. Such a shame about the outrageous price.
I've honestly heard really good stuff about the Sainsbury's Smart Charge network and it's great to see that they're enthusiastic and invested in it. Hopefully they can roll this out to more sites over time, because my local store has these now, but I also have a 7kW home charger, so it's going to be far more useful at other sites of course where I'm likely to be travelling or on holiday. But this could also be very useful for people who don't have access to a home charger at making EVs seem less daunting. It's also good to know that the chap in charge of this project actually seems to know his stuff - it gives confidence that the job is going to be done right.
What impressed me about the latest Kempower chargers is they display on the screen whether the charge speed is being restricted by the charger or the EV. This should hopefully stop the endless moaning that the chargers aren't supplying full power when in actual fact it is the EV that isn't allowing the full charge power.
Good interview. I couldn’t stop laughing at the stereotypical BMW parking behind though, and the one that rolled in at the end doing the same thing! 😂😂

Interesting interview. It’s great to see these being added and they’ve clearly thought carefully about the implementation 👍🏻
Very informative interview. Was watching another UA-cam channel recently which claimed that all supermarket, and other large retail sites were not owned by the retailer. Sainsbury's obviously have the land and are making good use of it.
Definitely the right way forward, and the charger units are great. But until the prices become even remotely competitive, I just can't see myself using them.
Bravo Sainsbury, feels like you have a lead on the competitors & the accessible bays for me being disabled make a huge difference and I would make these stores a destination for charging over other choices. Well done Mr EV
Good to see UK supermarkets are moving into the 21st century. For several years here in Tenerife all supermarkets, large shops, shopping centres and main public carparks have had free AC charging and many have DC too.
I didn't realise these were so new, I've only had my EV since July and have used the Sainsbury's chargers at their Bridgend and Newport stores - very handily located just off the M4 junctions and a cheaper alternative (in terms of food at least) than stopping at the M4 services. I did notice how good the experience was at the time. Keep it up Sainsbury's.
Good to see Sainsbury’s taking charging facilities seriously. Obviously there are other supermarkets with charging but often it’s one or two charge points, often out of order or tucked away in a corner ICEd. Kempower satellites are a great choice as well, small form factor, easy to use and informative. I’m looking forward to seeing more of these popping up in Sainsbury’s across the UK. Thanks for this video, fantastic stuff. Also, amusing to see the BMW in the background living up the the stereotype and can’t park properly despite the generously sized bay!
After Hotels and restaurants (or close proximity to) and service stations, Supermarkets generally have the parking space to install chargers. IMHO, i think you need to have access to toilets and if possible, snacks ...while you charge. Other than the "do it yourself" option that Sainsburys has done, is it up to users to suggest locations? Tesla certainly have a "suggest a location" on their website. Networks: Electroverse, Charge place Scotland? In fact, the more the merrier for us users. Well done Sainsbury for taking the initiative.
Not sure if you know this but you can use Electroverse cards with Charge Place Scotland charging stations. I think it happened in June/July this year and it made the CPS card that I got, but never got to use, redundant. I only found out when the chargers showed up on the Electroverse app. 😄
I agree. With my bladder the size it is, having facilities nearby is essential! I've suggested a few locations to different operators in the past and I've been told why they can't do it each time. Usually it comes down to the hundreds of thousands it costs to put in a hub (or even just a couple of chargers!) and they'll only do it if it's a busy site. What CPOs are always on the lookout for is land owners as it's so difficult to find people with land that'll happily lease it for 10 years. This is where Sainsbury's have a massive advantage.
That was a well worth watching video Andrew and good to see Sainsbury’s taking a positive step for the masses. It’s also good to see you can pay like you do at their petrol stations without using a fancy card system! I have wanted an EV for a long time but been held back by the faff and my wife’s range anxiety! 🥴
We have had chargers at our Sainsbury's for some time and I have noticed how often bays are ICE'd. It would be interesting to know if Sainsbury's actively do anything to stop this such as making in store announcements to offending car owners.
I just don’t get why people think it’s okay doing that. I never would do this, but can you imagine how it would go down if you parked an EV at petrol station pump and left it there for 30+ minutes. The same type of person that parked in the EV charging bay would be raging. It’s not any different but I bet it is in their minds!
Used the Sainsbury's at Bury St Edmunds this past Sunday. Bays were available, good size, very accessible, contactless payment, pulling 120kw, popped into the store for a coffee and snack whilst charging, QR code allows you to view charging status whilst away from the car. Exactly how charging should be.
Great interview, really informative and Sainsburys should be applauded for their foresight. It'll invariably lead to it's competitors having to make similar provision and logically you'd also expect it'll prompt a degree of downward movement in charging cost to the punter as a result.
Great interview and so illuminating, I feel there is so much potential knowledge to be gained from this, like the power infrastructure and all the difficulties in setting up a hub that the Govt could listen and learn. also what a great advert for EVs where you can charge up while doing your shopping.
I'm in Sainsbury's a couple of times a week but if the majority have charge points going forward it's a very convenient place to aim for . Very informative. 👍
Thanks so much Mr T for producing this info on the sainsbury charging network, I have been looking at the ones in the south. The one at Chichester is in status coming soon for almost 6 months. But as discussed there are over 60 sites to choose from around the country.
If that were 500 stores I would agree, but the desert that is the south of England regards chargers it's abysmal. Can they not do more than one site at a time?🎉
This implementation by Sainsbury's is hugely impressive. Quite frankly if all the main supermarket chains implemented this kind of infrastructure at all their larger (i.e. not high street ones) sites then it will be a massive boost to the availability of EV chargers for those who can't charge at home - and those that can.
I think that this is the true answer for those without the ability to charge at home. A weekly charge at the supermarket whilst shopping has to be the answer.
It’s great to see Sainsbury’s taking the lead. They really have an opportunity to be market leaders if they can reduce the price. 60p a kWh is what I’d be willing to pay. It would be nice to see them partner with Octopus Electroverse.
Great video and congratulations Sainsburys for finally tackling this. Weekly supermarket charging seems like a great solution for those who don't have home charging. But as ever 75p makes EV's a tough sell to those who don't have home charging. Do all your stores have roofs plastered with solar, if not why not? Also maybe a buffer battery so you don't need such a big grid connection?
A great video Andy. I was very excited when I saw Sainsbury's were finally getting on the EV charging train. At present our local stores are not on the list, but hopefully they will be soon. The one in Wrexham has plenty of space for the units and the power units, not sure about the local connections. I agree, greater visibility of chargers helps potential buyers see just how much infrastructure is actually out there.
Great interview - covered all the bases 😊 Glad Sainsbury’s are putting in decent ultra-rapids as most existing supermarket chargers are 7kW and a complete waste of time 😢
Very interesting video and great to hear of some of the difficulties from the operator persepective. Electroverse support please! PS Great to see the blue BMW in the back of shot keeping up the reputation for great parking...
Refreshing to see a supermarket installing rapid chargers. The slow 7kW chargers the others install just don’t make sense. A 30/45 min shopping trip would give you a full charge on a rapid, where a 7kW unit, only gives you a few percent. Good video 👌🏻👍🏻
IMO 7Kw does have advantages. For the same investment most of the car park bays could be covered and slower charging may encourage more frequent visits, which would be good for the supermarket footfall. Upfront cost would be far less so each Kwh could be cheaper, given this was one of the reasons given for the high cost for fast charging. Most people will have travelled a very short distance to be there anyway. I will admit that combining a weekly shop with weekly full charge, for those lacking home charging, is a compelling argument though.
I've used Smart Charge 3 times when I've been away from home and I've always had a really rapid charge. It's a much better experience than using charging hubs at motorway services or petrol stations. As I do 95% of my charging at home, price is not such a barrier when I'm on the road. Obviously I won't use Shell, BP or Instavolt because their prices are ridiculous but 75p is OK if I can get food at supermarket prices to even out the overall cost.
Great video Andrew and well done Sainsbury's..👍🏻 Also why can't people park properly, note to the lady opposite you in the BMW but living up to their reputation of course..
Yep, no charger at home, waiting patiently for the Sainsbury's right next to where my wife works and where she parks to get some chargers.... Is there a list somewhere of which sites are next on the list to have chargers put in, i wonder, must check that out? Hope they will go on the Octopus Electroverse list. We found the local BP Pulse at Premier Inn came back on line after being told they were no longer going to be available, odd but such a relief. Great interview, Andrew, the only thing I was wanting the answer to was: why dont they put solar roofs over the charging bays to help with the expense and power draw on the grid? It always seems like such a missed opportunity not to use solar but I assume there is some technical or practical reason why not.🤔
The chargers look good, and have used once before without a problem. Something reassuring to know that if I go on a long trip I can look for a sainsburys and be able to find a rapid charger that is available and works.
What you said at the very end is the key - visibility. Non EV drivers need to see that there's charging in convenient places, and every large supermarket and motorway service station would be a great start. A standardised EV charging station symbol on motorway signs would also help. The network is large now but often hidden away - this needs to change and quickly.
This is really good news. I am so hesitant about going back to an EV, partially because I hated the public charging experience. If Sains are going to have these all over it will make things easier.
And an easer way to add your Nectar card, as it is quite incontinent, having to go in to find out your number then past it in. ie scanning or swiping the nectar card.
Really good to see Sainsbury’s installing rapid charger hubs. I hope they deal firmly with anyone ICEing the bays. I really enjoyed the Bimmer in the background parked across 2 parking spaces. Do the BMW dealers teach you that when you get the car? 😉
We have these in Harrogate - same great set up and facilities. At 75p they are no use to me or others with home charging but its right next to the Yorkshire Showground and Event centre so will be useful for the hundreds of people visiting those.
At some point in the next few years we'll have to work out queuing systems for EV chargers. For example, an electronic ticketing system that notifies you when a charger is free (and you're next). It can also notify car owners when their car is fully charged (and time to move off the charger). The Monta app already has this functionality, and others must do too.
Used for the first time today in Kendal. Really good signposting and availability. By far the best chargers in a large radius. Not the cheapest but not too bad value overall.
Follow up question if you have ongoing contact. Do they have any plans to put Solar Panels over parts of their car parks? Bifacials over the charging bays would be a great start!
Great interview. I tried to write to Sainsburys about their new network and especially their PRICING which is appallingly expensive. As expected he tended to fudge his answer about pricing. Way more expensive than Tesla, so I always try to use Tesla when away from home. I feel an idiot paying double the price elsewhere! Pity as otherwise it is great network. I believe a true, fair and competitive price should be around 50p/kWh. Especially as it would attract EV drivers and this improve the spend in store.
I wonder whether they'd make any profit at 50p/kWh. As it stands, I'm not sure they would. Tesla's advantage is they make their money selling cars so they can manage to have a network of Superchargers without needing to generate much profit.
@@MrEV Allow me to rant! After being a EV 2 car family now since 2017, the EV market is DYING due to social media rubbish about the failings of EVs and for me the public cost of charging. And now governments and car manufacturers are starting to row back on the EV push. If you do not have a house and driveway, (home charging)you would be MENTAL for even considering owning an EV and using the public charge network. You would be far better off with ICE. FACT. Cheaper to run and far less hassle. With domestic rates at around 25p/kWh how can any company justify rates of 79p/kWh and even higher? Yes I know the capital costs are huge, but we are all being forced in to EVs whether we like it or not. (Supposedly) Tesla SCs are incredibly busy now (DPD drivers/EV minicabs and the the EV public who now know better!). Shell/BP are all multi billion $ companies. They could easily compete on price with Tesla. Wonder why not? (sarcasm) But Sainsburys and Tesco are in a prime position to compete with Tesla on price but are shooting themselves in both feet due to pricing. They are and will be mostly empty. And they are mostly empty - the ones I have seen. Nicely laid out/well lit. But empty! And then they will withdraw them a few years down the line due to them not being used! Would only consider them in an emergency. PS- my nearest hub is a Tesla- Anywhere from 28p-37p/kWh with membership. And 22p/kWh at some places for overnight rates. Fill up costs £11-£13. With Sainsburys that would be £40-£50, or almost as much an ICE car but far less range especially in winter. I have home charging (and solar/battery etc). But f I need to travel far at short notice, Tesla is my go to for a quick fill. No way I am paying 3-5x the price elsewhere even if Elon has turned a little mad recently!

Very good interview Andrew. Clear and informative
Good interview. Spoiled at the 19:10 point where you can see in the background not one, but two BMWs unable to park between the lines. :o)
Love what they’re doing and hopefully they will keep rolling stations out.
Thanks so much Mr T for producing this info on the sainsbury charging network, I have been looking at the ones in the south. The one at Chichester is in status coming soon for almost 6 months. But as discussed there are over 60 sites to choose from around the country.
6 months?! Ouch - that must be a hold-up with the DNO then.
0-500 is a year is absolutely amazing. Great video Andrew!
🙌
If that were 500 stores I would agree, but the desert that is the south of England regards chargers it's abysmal. Can they not do more than one site at a time?🎉
Great interview 👍
This implementation by Sainsbury's is hugely impressive. Quite frankly if all the main supermarket chains implemented this kind of infrastructure at all their larger (i.e. not high street ones) sites then it will be a massive boost to the availability of EV chargers for those who can't charge at home - and those that can.
Great interview, really insightful and something a bit different. More like this please.
I think that this is the true answer for those without the ability to charge at home. A weekly charge at the supermarket whilst shopping has to be the answer.
Great initiative by Sainsbury's.
Can't help noticing the typical BMW parking in the background toward the end of the video 😂
Thanks for highlighting this - useful to know, esp for trips away
Well done Sainsbury's. Hopefully my nearest branch get these chargers installed cause my Mum has an electric car so it would be a great help
Forward thinking company well done sainsburys keep up the hardworking 👏
From talking to them about it, their list changes every day so you may be lucky with your local store soon!
Great to see progress like this 👍🏼
Great interview - covered all the bases 😊 Glad Sainsbury’s are putting in decent ultra-rapids as most existing supermarket chargers are 7kW and a complete waste of time 😢
Very interesting video and great to hear of some of the difficulties from the operator persepective.
They got this company doing charging in Watford and it’s been fantastic.
Don't forget to collect those Nectar points Nigel 😉
Great to see a supermarket getting on board with EV charging a good payment partner for me and all other Motability drivers would be Go Charge
Electro verse would be a good team to be with for Sainsbury's for charging
Great video Andrew and well done Sainsbury's..👍🏻
Also why can't people park properly, note to the lady opposite you in the BMW but living up to their reputation of course..
It always seems like such a missed opportunity not to use solar but I assume there is some technical or practical reason why not.🤔
Fantastic to see this sort of content!
Great video Andy. But I was permanently distracted by the parking of the blue BMW!🤣🤣🤣
And then the grey BMW drove in and parked in exactly the same way as the blue one!!🤣
Thank you! Lovely to hear from you. Amazingly, all the time I spent editing and I didn't notice it!
@@MrEVlol It just leapt out at me and then I couldn’t unsee it! Great to see you getting such interesting and varied content these days.
A great option for anyone who can't charge at home, but at 10 times the cost of an off-peak home charge 😮. Still a big headscratcher .
Excellent interview
Great video. And well done Sainsbury's!
This is really good news. I am so hesitant about going back to an EV, partially because I hated the public charging experience. If Sains are going to have these all over it will make things easier.
Electroverse network please :). Great interview and i want Richards Job
Crikey. That’s an impressive development speed. Sainsbury’s can be rightfully proud of that rate. Others could learn from their experience. ❤
Good video big all I could focus on was the blue BMW parked over 2 bays 😂
And an easer way to add your Nectar card, as it is quite incontinent, having to go in to find out your number then past it in. ie scanning or swiping the nectar card.
Good interview I wish we had a supermarket like this in Australia
Great info, checked my local Sainsburys, and there are 10 new rapid chargers, Wasn't aware ?
See you soon hopefully 🙂
Really good to see Sainsbury’s installing rapid charger hubs. I hope they deal firmly with anyone ICEing the bays. I really enjoyed the Bimmer in the background parked across 2 parking spaces. Do the BMW dealers teach you that when you get the car? 😉
In the Whitby area there are no ultra rapid chargers fastest 50kw there is however a bloody great big Sainsbury’s the area needs this
We have these in Harrogate - same great set up and facilities.
Good interview Andrew.
Used for the first time today in Kendal. Really good signposting and availability. By far the best chargers in a large radius. Not the cheapest but not too bad value overall.
Sainsburys have been late to the game, but credit to them it's been done really well. Well structured, shot and edited A
Great content Andy!
Follow up question if you have ongoing contact.
Do they have any plans to put Solar Panels over parts of their car parks? Bifacials over the charging bays would be a great start!
Positive stuff here. Hope we see more of it.
