- Released by H.I.M. in 2005, "Wings of a Butterfly" is an iconic rock song of our youth. Anaria has always had its roots tied closely to gothic rock and gothic metal, so it was a pleasure to put our modern rock edge on this '00s classic. The main music video performance was filmed at Est8 of Mind in Whitinsville, MA in front of an old pipe organ facade, which we found to be quite appropriate for a song of gothic origins!

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this video already and I need to add one more comment. Here's what I want to comment on, and by the way, I am not a musician by any stretch of the imagination. I have just loved listening to all forms of rock since back in the late 60's/early 70's. I think doing cover songs can be risky. Sometimes bands/artists will do a cover because its expected of them or maybe their label requires it. When that happens, the song may be good, the musicianship may be good, but it lacks...hmmm.. it lacks soul. And in those cases they not only fail to do justice to the original, they fail to do justice to themselves. To me doing a cover should be fun for the band/artist. Does it have to be note for note exact to be a cover? Not as I see it...the band/artist should be having fun with it as I said and they should be making it their own. I'm not saying that the band/artists should not have a sense of dedication, a sense of respect to the original, especially if the original comes from another band/artists who may be a big influence on them. But, I feel it comes down to being true to themselves, again, having fun and the end result I think would be that of making the cover sound like an original. And that is what I feel here. As I said in my original comment, Anaria made this song their own. You could see them having fun in the video, you could hear them having fun playing the song, and I had fun watching and listening. That's why I love this! That's why I love (and always have) this band!
Thanks so much for your well-constructed comment! There are indeed many reasons bands perform cover songs. For us, when we choose a cover, it is because we want to celebrate that artist and their songwriting which has influenced us in some way. Some people do fan art or write fan fiction for the people and content they love, and for us, this is the musical equivalent of fan art. Although we always hope for new and exciting musical challenges as artists, it is 100 percent about celebrating our influences, uplifting the source material, and connecting with folks who also love those artists/songs. Of course not everyone will love our interpretation, but hopefully they can appreciate our intent and commune with our mutual love of the artist/song. :)
