Turn the key and thump on the top of the cap to break the vacuum seal. Remove the cap and clear the vent. The suction of the gas being consumed with the blocked vent draws the cap down. Eventually the bike will not run because gas won't flow. If your bike stops running for no apparent reason, pop the cap, and if it runs again, the vent is the issue. Good video... thanks for making it! This is a common problem.

I just bought a 2007 Vulcan nomad and just could not get the gas cap open. I am sure that this will work to get it open. I am feeling much better now. Thanks you so much for taking the time to show this clip

Just tried it with a gas cap that's on a project bike I picked up. Your tip worked perfectly. The bike had been sitting for almost 20 years. I had tried Dry Lock Lube, Marvel Mystery Oil and Deep Creep, none of which worked even remotely. Thanks for sharing!

I just got my bike and this video is super helpful! Like yours, my bike has sat for a while and the gas cap is stuck.

I just stumbled across this video and it is brilliant! I had the same problem with a VN1500 Vulcan gas cap. After watching this video it took me about 3 minutes to get it open. Thanks!

Hey man, we just got a 2002 VN800A. Stuck gas cap. Had a feeling the cap was just locked up from old gas. Followed your video and had the cap off in 5 minutes. Thank you for this video, it was exactly what we needed.

This video was the only one I found as short as it is it's very informative. Bought a 2000 vulcan nomad that had been sitting for a long time it was definitely the beating on the cap I had to get rough with it, but I got it. Thank you so much for this video🙏

As a mechanic, working on everything from trucks to tricycles. I've tried every spray known. Hands down, the absolute best is Kroil.
A bit pricey but worth it. The best degreaser by the way is B52. Even at 25% is still stronger than purple power.

Thank You so much for this video. I've had a 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan for some time now with the fuel cap stuck firmly in place. i didn't want to snap the key off so I just didn't mess with it. tried your method and Bam worked like a charm. Greatly appreciate you!

Thanks for posting this video! This method really works! I had a stuck gas cap on my 03 Kawasaki Drifter 800. Bought some PB Blaster and used a liberal amount down the lock opening after taping the tank to prevent PB over spray. Was patient and with the screwdriver for increased leverage/torque was able to open the cap. Removed the cap, cleaned off the crud and corrosion, reassemble and lubed everything and SUCCESS! Thanks again!

Thanks Jeffery, I had trouble with my 2000 VN800 fuel cap as the bike had been in storage for around 5 - 6 years, it wouldn't budge, and I had soaked it with penetrating fluid but still no good. Thanks to your method I got it open in a few minutes. I went in on the opposite side to the spring flap so it still closes over the key slot when the key is removed.

Thanks Jeffery! I've been trying to get into my, new to me, 1996 Vulcan 500 LTD. The original owner bent the factory key in front of me trying to open the tank. I soaked the lock cylinder in PB Blaster and was able to get it to turn about 45 degrees. I took the tank off and after draining the tank shot some PB blaster into the tank. I added Marvel Mystery oil as well. Each time I added solvent I turned the tank upside down to get the solvent over the cap. Nothing worked. I had a couple spare keys made and after hours of trying to open the cap, I bent one of the spares a bit jiggling and trying to persuade this thing open.
This bike was last titled in 2000 and I could only get it to turn as you showed on yours. I was planning on drilling mine out, but fortunately, I saw your video. I destroyed the key and lock cylinder getting into the tank, but now I can finally move forward. Lots of varnish in the tank, but I'll get that resolved and order a replacement cap with keys since this one is totally crusted over and now has a destroyed lock cylinder.

Thank you. I went in from the other side of the key so my flap still half works. Goal achieved.

Thanks, I have a 93 Vulcan, and one day the gas cap decided it wasn't going to open. Will do what you suggest. I have a problem with the vent too. Somehow it's clogged and the tank runs out of air and thus no fuel to the engine. Just like a vapor lock.

Awesome the screwdriver trick worked but I put the driver on the side of the key without the flap ( when key is in ) and the flap still now works.

Does it matter which side of the key you put the screwdriver in? And can I just have one extra key made and use that one key with the screwdriver?? Or do I really need to make several keys made? Thanks

    • @jefferymerrill5006
      @jefferymerrill5006  4 роки тому

It is a double sided key so either side should work. One extra key should be fine, I usually make two or three because I will invariably lose one or two over time, and prefer to use the replacement key to preserve the stock key.
