    I live 15 minutes from the factory. I’m going to purchase one with either the Kawasaki or Kubota gas engine for our property in SE Ohio. I mow around 6 acres of grass that’s very hilly with a zero turn & it sucks when it decides to take off Lol. We too have 150 acres with a Kubota L series, but with both decks as you have would be a win win.

    Diesel oil tends to go black pretty quickly in most. As long as you dont feel grit and its not burned, should be fine. If your worried, send a sample to a lab. Any autoparts store can sell ya the collection kit to mail in. Fill out the forms send it in, 2 weeks later they'll send you a form telling you whats in it and about how much life is left.

    So far, none of my "local" (hour and a half one way drive) dealers have rental implements for the Ventrac. I could really use a stump grinder on occasion, but not often enough to justify. Same for power rake, tiller, and ejtc, etc.... My aerovater with seeder is used about 4 days per year (that is sad) and the boom arm mower maybe 7 days of work in a year. That is a lot of dead time on expensive equipment, The tough cut, the groom mower, the power bucket with grapple and broom all get well used. The oil Kubota gasoline motor looks almost new at change time, but all of that soot suspended in your oil is indicating that the detergent package is working. Sooty oil much better than sludged motor.

    Another product you could try for soot filtration in diesels is a "bypass" filter kit, it lets the normal oil filter work and circulate oil, while whatever that regular filter doesn't pick up, goes through tubing / piping to be filtered out by a much finer micron rated filter.

    Engine oil. As a retired mechanic I would say never let your oil get that black. My personal equipment and vehicles get oil changed at manufacturers suggested intervals or once a year. Whichever comes first and I only use full synthetic oils. None of my engines have ever been damaged due to improper lubrication. From High performance v 8's to my lawn mower. I started using full synthetic when a NASCAR crew chief told me that petro based motor oil is obsolete for racing engines. I removed the oil pan on my vintage Toyota truck to replace the water pump at about 270 K miles and it may have had a tsp of sludge in a small area that wouldnt drain during an oil change. I used walmart, Castrol and mobile one since it had about 30K miles on it. WalMart oil has the same quality rating as the expensive synthetic oils. Changing oil frequently seems expensive but its not as expensive as replacing engines. Also keep up with all the filters. Air Oil fuel. No K&N unless you want your rings and cylinders prematurely worn out.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 місяці тому +1

      it's a diesel my brother......remember it's a diesel. 10 mins after I changed the oil...which you'll see in the next video...the oil was black as tar just like this. Just a diesel engine...oil gets dark quickly

  • @RobertJones-ey9qz
    @RobertJones-ey9qz 2 місяці тому +2

    If that diesel engine is like my semi, the oil turns black because of a little soot getting past the piston rings. That should be perfectly normal and it works as a lubricant too. After an oil change, my oil would be black after just a few hundred miles.

    That engine is a direct injection engine. (Don’t hook up a belt with engine running. Said “Two Fingers” the farm hand). I service my small diesels at 50 hours. They load up soot in the oil quickly. I have a 2200cc Isuzu turn on the generator. It is not so bad. I can go 100 hours on it. The difference is the turbo which boosts intake pressure and cylinder turbulence. Instead of sucking in the air. Dirty air cleaners make normally aspirated engines carbon up quickly too.

    Diesels have been called "oil burners" for too long for me to remember. Diesel is a high carbon fuel that burns dirty: not so much in its emissions as internally. Modern oils have additives to keep the carbon and soot "scrubbed" from the engine internals and hold them in suspension. If any of my diesel engine oils stayed clean I would be more worried about them not doing their job of both lubrication and cleaning than anything else. There are after-market filter add-ons that can be installed to filter out the soot and carbon but I don't see the benefit: regular cycle oil changes do the same thing.I run Rotella T 15W-40 dino oil in all my diesels. Road vehicles get changed every 5000 miles. Tractors every 200 hours or every 2 years. Small gas engines I use 10W-30 full synthetic. Those get changed annually. My gas powered welder I use same 10W-30 full synthetic and change it every 3 years (might put 20 hours on it in that time and it's stored in-doors.)

      she's no longer on the farm, been mentioned in a few vids now....but she's gone, she was killing the cats, she jumped up and scratched the crap out of my mother, roamed away anytime she was out, knocked over my ex wife and broke her arm, wouldn't listen and she bit a little girl. SHE HAD TO GO

    Can you disc the field and over seed a grass you want the cows to eat ? To faster recover the land ?

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer

      we have a seed drill here on the farm, however we'll simply roll out hay on the bare spots and the grass leaps out of the ground!

      lol....every time I hear someone mention Dexter cattle I know exactly who they've been watching.....and he's come here and put down my methods in the comments in the past.....I'm the most real person you'll meet and I'm not gonna paint a fake picture of making piles of profit on this small farm....it's taken alot of $$$ to build this and it's time the cows bring in profit

      I just thought a different cattle breed would eat less and still be profitable no disrespect intended, I started a small landscaping company 14 years ago took a few years to figure out how to make it profitable I’ve spent 0 dollars on advertising have 40 clients and a waitlist like you I’m in it for the long haul stick to your principles and go from there .

      the cattle business needs to stand on it's own two feet and earn, the equipment portion of my business isn't the "farm".....this is me working and generating content. Yesterday's video was about decision making on a small farm, hay expenses vs cattle sell off. I'm not going "broke" in the sense of business....but the farm portion has to show some profit. Equipment earns me a living....what you're watching earns me a living brother...the cattle....up to this point have lost money...until this year! Wooooo!!

    • @ky.gambler5281
      @ky.gambler5281 2 місяці тому

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer I understand the cattle need to turn a profit, basically what you do on the farm, 85% anyways, relates to the cattle imo. Some machines are cattle related expenses, hard to turn a profit when buying cattle, fences, machines etc when starting out. Good luck on the farm life..p.s. stop buying excess machines 😂🤣

    Diesels tend to build up a lot of soot and other bits of carbon in the oil and fluids due to how dirty petroleum diesel is and incomplete combustion. If the ventrac could run on a biodiesel blend that would help a bit.

    • @brianhillis3701
      @brianhillis3701 2 місяці тому

      Stay away from biodiesel if you don't burn it quickly. It goes bad in storage quickly and gets very corrosive. Put it in plastic never let water accumulate in the tank.

      he's almost worn off the smell...this is a farm my friend...pretty common for a dog to get skunked once in a while....he's smelling better and after about a week most of it is gone. Heck it took me a week to get the smell out of my house lol
