The Atman is the Brahman that have been wrapped by one human being Self for a long time with an unclear consciousness and attachments and ect . It will be called Brahman again once it's free from one human Self . In Mahayana Buddhism of East side . All beings are sharing a same one " True Self " but in different form . True Self is like a big universal NET , ones shaking , the less shaking too . Even though it looks different in between us , but basically we are same and sharing in one True Self . True Self is emptiness , no any kind of phenomena , beyond the emptiness and again in any phenomena . It beyond our thinking , act ...ect . You and I having it , it always here and there and never leave us eternity . Amitabha !

Well studied and well articulated , Neti Neti, They muddy the waters to make it seem deep. Atma literally means breath. Do look up the etymology .
In this way it is possible to have atma (breath - life force) and still anatta the nonexistence of a soul, essence, or any other enduring substantial entity. All is brahman.
    Shanti Bhai

Prana - is closer to breath and the method - of pranayama - is precisely that - with breath.
Prana is also - the vital energy - in the universe.

Thanks Jason. You explained a lot for me in this video. Recently i have understood that the 'awareness' within is not 'me', not Brian. It is, i believe, a 'spark' of God. Your explanation of the Atman/Brahman resonated with me. I can see what you mean. And again, your description of Ananda leapt out.
I'm not sure what kind of creator Brahman is, but the universal fine-tuning rules out any physical interference in the world.

    True!!
Now let me try to explain Atman and its journey
    So lets define something
Atma - A subtle non-destructible energy temporary residing in a different shapes which we call it as a body, observer , just the observer of what is done by our driver that is mind in physical mind .
Atma is like lord "Shiva" watching the flow of life in calm and composed manner as it does not affect the supreme energy .
Body - What we see the reality and once it destroys-everything ends a very superficial approach of how we see things .The very idea of the life ends once the body is destroyed.

Another beautiful video :) 5 years ago I changed my name to Atman with the intention of getting rid of all identities and letting go of the past completely. The pure intention behind was creating the possibility for Pure Self. I realised identities are the only obstacles in front of Truth and Liberation. Now I am Atman and I enjoy being in Atman :) Thank you for the video and clarifications :)

Actually there some minorities of buddhists believe in existence of Atman.
To me Anatman is kind of Neti-Neti concept. To say "Anatman is A, B, C" implies Atman is not A, B, C. Not denial of existence of Atman.

this is so weird but for me all of this has come so naturally. I had this urge to reach enlightenment since the age of 12 or 13, and now that i see it more than 20 years later it feels like i achieved most of the things jason talks in this video, i became selfless my friends even joke around me telling me im not even human. Little do they know about that i actually might not be human as im no longer my born-self not this human experience and so on and so forth. Another thing that came to be really naturally was this bliss thing, there was a month when i couldnt walk for a whole month because of an injury and i decided to "meditate" or whatever that was, and i deprived all of my senses for a whole month, no light, had my earphones blasting binaural beats 24/7, and bare ate. And after lets say a few days i was able to shut by mind and got rid of my anxiety and my attachment to time. I have adhd which makes this things almost imposible as my mind always wants to jump from one thought into the other and do stuff all the time. So i had like this urge to do things and i the passing of time gave my a huge amount of anxiety, as i wanted time to pass like really fast. So after a few days i was able to erase my anxiety, my attachment with time and my inner voice was shut. I spent who knows how long in this way until i reached this "bliss" thing. Its awesome cuz you feel so happy for no apparent reason and you can feel like things popping in the darkness that give you alot of joy and happiness. Its hard to explain but, all you need is to follow these simple steps to achieve this.

Fascinating. I like a true experimenter. I never saw myself as quite human as a kid. My hero was Mr. Spock, and my nickname was Bekoid. I was obsessed with Star Trek and Star Wars. I dreamed and wondered about other realities which included are we who we think we are? Are there beings made of pure energy? Can we access other dimensions? What is God made of? Try this: Take two magnets and have one in each hand. Hold them near each other so that you feel that strong pull towards each other. Slowly move your hands apart, and feel the pull getting weaker. Move your hands as far apart as you can but still feeling that pull. It will be subtle at this point. As you do it, you will sense the pull further and further apart. What is really amazing is how you feel after doing this. You will have the senses of a cat. You will feel invisible energies all over the place. (from people, electrical gadgets, and ambient energy around you).

@@TheEmpressPalpatine Hello! i love that you liked my comment! and i love that you also shared your own experience i love when people do that, i didnt know you could do that with magnets deffenetly gonna try it out! owww i love cats! i have this things with cats that i experience true love with them and they love me and i kiss them and touch em we are in so much joy. I even do this with stray cats, and one thing that i find interesting its that cats often avoid people but with me they stay where they are and let me touch them and are really happy to be around me, and literally im the only person i know of that has this connection with cats. Anyways going back to your comment yeah Spock has something about him that resonates inside me too i can not tell exactly what it is but that character has something very interesting about him and starwars... what can i say about it... i believe the force and the darkside and everything starwars speaks about its 100% real, and i love the teachings starwars gives you, since i was i dont know 12 or 13 i became a buddhist and the teachings joda and the jedis give are so much alike. I dont know sometimes starwars feels as a religion (and i mean that in the good way not the aweful things humans have done with religions) itself, its so full of knowledge and things i can relate to. I live in Argentina if you ever come on vacations let me know ill show you around where i live my city its surrounded by nature, plus argentina its dirty cheap nowadays if you earn a salary in dollars. I send you much blessings and i hope everything is alright in your life and if not i hope everything gets great soon!

@@aicelsmash1168 I am so glad you replied to me. Well, if I ever go to Argentina, I'll have to look you up. I am definitely a cat lover. I grew up in a Christian fundamentalist home. Approaching the divine was all rules and regulations. Star Wars was a relief from all that; and yes, it has been sort of my religion. Back in the early 2000's, there were tons of web sites where people who considered themselves Jedi or Sith would have discussions. I was on a certain Sith site where we discussed all sorts of esoteric and magical lore. I love Nikola Tesla and consider him an enlightened person. If you ever get near a Tesla coil, you are likely to have a very interesting spiritual experience.

20.44 As I understand it 'we' do not align with the Atman. By letting go we clear the path for the Atman (Brahman) to be realised through us - we as an ego can become a conduit by letting go of control and the inner divine will set about the process of change and purification within ourselves, so that which we are without the baggage collected both internally and externally, all the schema I mentioned earlier drops away to allow us to know the essential of what we are which is Brahman.

Very interesting. This concept of "Undifferentiated Consciousness" also exists in Mathematical Physics, the "Dirac-delta" or the "impulse" function which has zero width in time but infinite amplitude, and having an area of 1, when transformed into the frequency or vibration domain has infinite width with a constant amplitude of1, which means that the impulse function is composed of infinite vibrations, which sounds like the ultimate reality.

I think that is the importance of the spiritual disciplines as well, to experience the Brahman and to understand the Jiva causes a lot of the negative feelings you have in regard to the Brahman not the other way around.

First of all - l will like to thank you for the great efforts in explaining the doctrine of Hinduism * Especially this difficult topic of ( Atman ) Very complicated topic - Buddhism rejects the idea totally and the western world too = but the idea might be true or not * and when ordinary folks gets in to it. he or she might have a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings of the spiritual workings and miss their part to the truth for ever ** Thats is the reason l disregard this topic and follow the advice of the Buddha == In one of its text that says ( A fly can go miles and save energy without flying . if it hangs on to a traveling bulls ) = Meaning * that one can just devote and worship a true guru or saints who knows the nature of ultimate Braman and has liberated his or self like lord Buddha * by so doing and with good Dharma . the devoty will also achieve liberation ** Engaging in difficult and misconceptional Spiritual practices and doctrines will only lead people astray = not achieving anything at the end ☆☆

    Dear Jason,
Good subject. Very relevant at the Tarainstitute where I have chosen to study the concept of the journey; rather than the destination in line with what the Buddha, himself taught. It might not get me to a point first or foremost. But I will progress as a person with the right teacher. I mean :I am not saying the destination doesn't exist. But it is as important that I help others while I am on my path. The Lammas of the institute teach the goal as liberation. The path is dhamma; the rule, is karma. The Tibetan Buddhist ' Book of the Dead is the main text; of the Lammas of Tibet.🙏😎🍌🎸🙏Yours Sincerely, Derek Rocha.

@Jason Gregory I loved this video ! I’m new to all this information but over the passed couple of days Something happened to me that made me become very interested in this subject.
So first let me just say that now after what I experienced
I think I have a deep understanding that I am not my body.. I also understand that I am not my “intellectual mind” either.
I’m pretty sure once this body dies..... that’s it. No more body pleasure....No more active mind.... And No more ego. All that remains is the “ Undifferentiated Consciousness” as you called it.
Now let’s say because things in nature are “simply” complex that reincarnation IS what happens when the body and mind DIE and the Undifferentiated Consciousness gets put into another “body”
How do I remember what happened to “the body” my Self was in last (like me now ) ? How do I connect to my passed bodies .... my passed Jivas ? (The bodies that lived before)
what I don’t understand is when growing up and heard about “enlightenment” and people that are “enlightened” that seems like something they can do.
I even once heard a story about a guy when I was deployed that knew exactly when he was going to die.... even more it’s like he chose the exact time ! He woke up early one morning and finished a panting after that he woke up his whole family walked them up his favorite hill and as the sun came up he smiled, fell down, and died.
The Priest Of the town said for a man to die like that it takes more than cleverness and spirituality to achieve that.
It seems to me what you said and what I think I understand this video is like the prerequisite to the first step to enlightenment.
How do you think they did stuff like that?
Is there more steps than the two you listed? Or is there like a book you’d recommend for me ? Like I said I’m very new to this but after my experience from this day forward My self thinks it’s a Jnani and my Self i think is pleased with the decision..... in the sense that it’s ready for the ride or journey.

It really all depends on your own understanding of the Soul and Atman. I use both these words interchangeably because it is the closest word that we have in English that describes the Atman. The Soul is already whole and one with THE SUPREME BEING. It is pure Undifferentiated Awareness.

  • @petesweet8504
    @petesweet8504 2 роки тому

I see and agree with the View you are explaining. Words are so difficult when one is trying to explain what One Sees. Thinking is not Seeing. Thinking uses Words where Metaphors are best used with Sight. The words of Unassociated Consciousness, Disassociation and Renunciation along with the core of Abide as the Atman as the Self in which everything that is seen is Brahman, Brilliant! I follow your Insight and have a suggestion with the words you used toward the end of your talk about Brahman that may be clearer from my vantage point. I’m sure you will agree with my view or hopefully you can point to me what I am missing. When you use the words You’re or You are in for example, you’re just Blissful, you’re just Happy or You are in Pure Bliss this may confuse those looking.... that the “You” will gain or attain something. Maybe better to say that One sees that they are Bliss it-Self, Happiness it-Self and Peace it-Self. I am aware this is what you are pointing to by Unassociated. Hope I am not being semantical here as words are so clumsy.
“Bliss is not something to be got. On the other hand you are always Bliss.” SRM

Jason this may seem a little too late but i was just listening to you and imagining an analogical comparison between 'levels' of human spiritual awareness and a user of a program running on a computer IE hardware, embedded controls, operating system, programs,GUI,user ...it's in there somewhere

I just stumbled onto your page and I have to be honest, I don’t know much about Hinduism. I have a very basic understanding of it and I used to practice “westernized” yoga but never really went deep into it. But your videos have really grasped me and I feel like I’m actually learning something so thank you for that.
Now my question... and I don’t expect anyone to even have an answer for this so we can call it “The Great Question”. But why if this is our true nature, why is it not just our default? Why is it so hard to naturally fall into what is “right”? This is where I have a hard time with religions and fully believing and having faith in them because they seem to kind of go against human nature. Humans are imperfect and make mistakes, are we supposed to be constantly at war within ourselves to be in harmony with nature?
I have considered myself an agnostic anti-theist for about 13 years. My personal belief is that I don’t know anything so therefore anything is possible but religions are created by the ever flawed man as a tool to control the individual.
I’m not saying I’m right I just feel like this is the most logical explanation I can come up with as someone who has studied the sciences and as someone who questions everything.
I guess I could go on and on but I have been really feeling some resonance with Hinduism and I’m just interested what someone like you (who clearly is deeply knowledgeable about the religion) thinks about my opinion. I’m feeling very open to learning right now so anyone who takes the time to read this feel free to add your 2 cents. 🙏🏻

Hey there Heather, it's a very late reply but I hope this reaches you.
When you say why we aren't by default in our natural state, i.e. Brahman or the undifferentiated concoiusness, you are speaking from your mind..thoughts, not from your True "Self" (not self). YOU ARE BRAHMAN by default!!!! You need no change. You percieve yourself to be not in the right atate because of ignorance and the fact that when you say "I", what you really mean is your mind..body..thoughts..desires all of which are not your true self but just an illusion (Maya). By default you, I and everyone else and everg object in this universe is one..i.e. That one ultimate reality! But mind you do not fall for neoadvaita. While the knowledge of Advaita Vedanta can be the most liberating thing ever to touch a human mind, it needs to be understood under great Gurus.
I have a lot more to share! (Btw I am a novice in this myself) If you want to, feel free to reach out on 1spiderson2@gmail.com 🙏🙏🙏🙏
      Om

I believe in a creator, but it's not a Religious God. Universal fine-tuning precludes any of the Religious Gods.
I agree with you on "why is it so hard...". My understanding is that the awareness within is born with us but is purely awareness with no inherent knowledge or information.
One must believe it exists, or the possibility exists, or one cannot be aware of it. If you're unaware of something it doesn't exist for you.
I think we are two things. Robot-vehicles for the selfish genes (body/mind) and vessels for a spark of God ( Atman). And that spark is in every human.

Is the Atman closely related to the experience of looking out through the eyes? I also observe that followers of Brahman believe it exists beyond the realms of Earth, time, and space. Additionally, in Buddhism, individuals achieve a state of awakening through meditation and meditative travel.
As someone who is perpetually gazing out through my eyes, it deeply troubles me to think I might never experience rebirth. Unless I find some hidden way to ensure my return. How often do people ponder this when they look out through their eyes? We also need to consider words that are closely related to our thoughts and feelings

15.00 - my understanding is that we are not 'identified' with the Brahman, we develop to experience being Brahman, as we are it. Brahman is essentially who we are.

We are threefold. So far as I'm concerned, we are Atman (Self); Soul; and personality (self). This is based on my esoteric readings. These three areas are different vortices of energy. It is said that when we become one with Atman (the Self), we find it more compelling than the most powerful drug. Christians claim that God is three-in-one and we are made in God's image. Yes, the different terminologies of the different religions can be confusing. I like Jason's explanations.

I am not clear about several things and I have some questions
Is there an unlimited number of Atman's and living beings?
were they ever created in time?
how do they move through space?
were they all created at once?

This is actually very clear. Thanks. I like the way you integrate different teachings into one understanding.
I'm curious about your own experience... it seems obvious that you are active as a "character" in the world, with a certain direction to your actions, and even certain "agendas" (as the wish for this channel to thrive, for example).
Would you roughly say that there is just an allowing of the personal tendencies to "run" as they do, and still abiding "at the center of the circle" (as they say in Tao)?
I really am curious to hear from you more about this ...

As the Jiva I can say that I have experienced the Self many times. The more we dip into the Self the easier it becomes. For me I just have to remove "I" or self from my mind and the Lord appears. My experience of God is:
The true Self is the true controller and its not a you or a me. It is the inner man the true person that is beyond identification with body, mind or emotions. It is the image of God within us. It is what all true religions point to because humanity is of divine origins and yet we are deluded by the ego which is our body, mind identification. We have to let go of the "I" by recognizing that we are not the doer. The means by which we come to this realization is our spiritual path. There is no "I" or self or ego in anything in reality. Ego or self is an illusion that doesn't exist that the mind overlays onto whatever is happening and claims it for itself. To see the truth we have to come to the realization that God is the only doer and that everything is predetermined and that we have no control whatsoever. We are powerless. We are not the doer of actions or the thinker of thoughts. We don't have a body, mind or a consciousness. We don't own anything and we don't have anything. When we come to that conclusion all that is left is pure awareness itself without an "I" attached to it. That is the realization of Brahman, the true Self of all. The more we come to this realization the more we merge with Atman, which is the eternal Brahman. The Atman is like the drop in the ocean of Brahman and the entire ocean can be seen within the drop. The macrocosm is reflected in the microcosm. We are each the reflection of all that is. We are transformed by this shift in perspective from a perspective that is focused on "I" to one that is focused on Brahman. It is a revolution of the mind.
    Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om.

You explained very well about pure consciousness ( Atman). Atman is the True Self. Atman is not the soul in the western sense.
When Buddha said "Anatma " or no-self, he actually meant your ego. How can he deny the ever-present witness consciousness, that is the atman in Hinduism? The sukshma sarira ( subtle body) somewhat corresponds to the soul in the western sense. and not the atman ( pure consciousness)

    Can I say,
    Brahman is the Headquarter,
    Atman is the branches,
which attached with every individual Jiva.
If Jiva is getting well connected with Atman, then Atman will connect with the Brahman the Headquarter.
This create the situation of "Aham Brahmasmi" (i am one with Brahman)

I stopped at 13.47 - I dislike the term Self, although I understand it as meaning that which we are on a fundamental basis stripped of the baggage that we collected when we became aware of ourselves, when passing out of childhood (infancy). I prefer the explanation of Atman as the universal consciousness immanent within ourselves, which due to our mental schema (see psychology) we are disconnected from psychologically.

When you mention Brahman Taoism came into mind... The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao; The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The Nameless is the origin of Heaven and Earth; The Named is the mother of all things.
