Transformers Alternators Smokescreen was the reason I started collecting Transformers as an adult. I am car person/guy, so I bought Smokescreen on a whim in 2008. Fast forward to today, and I have two bedrooms full of my Transformers collection.
Ah, yes. The version of Ravage who donked up Japanese G1’s timeline so badly to the point where it resulted in an alternate (Alternators? Alternity?) timeline that ended up as home to the Wheeljack and Prowl who appeared in The Headmasters and Victory. Also, I’d love an “Alternators Universe Shockwave” (from Legacy Knock Out) and an “Alternators Universe Wheeljack” (that could be repainted into a Cybertron Donwshift) sometime in the future.
Alternators is the closest thing that modern transformers ever got to what Diaclone was trying to do originally, accurate vehicle models that could transform into robots.
The Tracks mold always did have really stiff legs. It's because that's where the diecast went in the Binaltech version and the plastic thighs in the Alternator didn't have the tolerances adjusted quite right.
surprisingly they got the engine block correct on the corvette! down to the cylinder count (v8) and the red valve covers found they did really well with this guy and that makes me happy as a corvette guy. thats why this line appeals to me so much that i felt inclined to purchase this guy and tracks mint in box after watching! thanks for the video.
I only had Grimlock and he wasn’t that bad. It was mostly clearance issues. I’ve been thinking of getting him again, along with the two Ravages and Hot Rod.
I recommend tracking down the other version of Alternators Ravage, where the toy transforms into a Jaguar car. I love the synchronicity between G1 Ravage and a Jaguar car alt-mode!
One thing about the vettes, the way the engine looks is correct, it's just in the real version, the engine is right behind the front axle rather than between the front axle like the toy (as in the actual car is front mid engine rather than only just being front engined). The Honda S2000 figures (Windcharger/overdrive, Decepticharge, and arcee) is the exact same issue going on
7:59 well you can pretend it's the sun visors because that's usually where they would be on any car, granted they should fold forward instead back but the idea works good enough.
No, that's actually the correct direction for the sun visors on this model (either that, or every Corvette C5 Z06 convertible owner posting pictures of their car online is doing it wrong)
^Transformers Alternators Windcharger was the toy that brought me back to the Transformers franchise after dropping out in the very early 90s. I picked up a lot of Alternators after Windcharger and I still have them all and proudly display them next to my TF Animated figures.
I still have the Alternator Shockwave knocking around somewhere, and it was definitely one of the most complicated transformations I'd ever come across. I still can't do it without the instructions!
I so, so, so wanted, and still want, an official VW Bug Bumblebee. Back in the day, as I understand it, Volkswagen said no because of their anti-war stance. Of course, they go for it these days, but no Alternator line anymore.....
Are any of the Alternators toys worth getting/owning these days? I've had my eyes on the Smokescreen mold in the past, but I just kept never getting around to them
Smokescreen is pretty solid honestly. Most of them are probably a pass though. I personally really like the Alternity guys that came out after alternators in Japan. Alternity Convoy in any of his colors is a very fun toy in this style. Id give smokescreen a try since he’s pretty damn good, and since you have interest in him. If you like him, you’d probably enjoy some of the others.
On the subject of Alternators homages popping up in Generations. We still have yet to get Loudpedal, the black repaint of Tracks to happen from the Kingdom mold. Hasbro could, include an alternate Battle Ravage head, the way they did with Creatures Collide and SG Magnus.
I have Grimlock, Ravage and Hound from this line... Both the Grimlock and Ravage have 'synchronized' front wheels, and Both have the plastic 'push/pull' apparatus Hound's front wheels don't sync, but they do have spring 'suspension'
I don't know if this was intentional (probably wasn't, since the screw holes aren't filled in any way), but those tabs on the windshield are in just the right spot to be the sun visors on the real car.
I kinda consider Binaltech as "Masterpiece - the Prototype". Really high end figures at the time with licensed vehicle alts. I do however find the line to be one of the worst aging in the line, I will keep my Binaltech Smokescreen though, very nice looking.
From what I can tell, they're roughly Voyager size. But the ultimate goal was to make the vehicles modes 1:24 scale, so the robot height may not be 100% consistent.
As someone who owns the 'Le Mans Blue' Alternity Megatron (and actually likes it), oh yes, clearance was always a big issue with these guys, even later in life ^^; This does look really cool though! Did you get most of the transformation done then? It looks like there's too much kibble for the knees to work ^^;
This was a great fig. But when they came out with the Jaguar that became the jaguar known as Ravage, this guy needed a retooling. So I took the head from an Alternator Prime and put him on this guy. Thus creating Optimus Primal! The colors & weapon placement all matches! So cool!
Don't get me wrong I keep all the boxes but I always open the toys even quote-unquote holy grills for some people they were meant to be held and played with and admired not to just look at and set on a Shelf case-in- point 80 a toy fair one year before the toys hit the Shelf Optimus Prime still in box open that bad boy up ASAP

I always do
The engineering in these toys over the years of always fascinated me

An omega supreme figure would have been really cool.

I had a model of this exact car, the engine was pretty similar actually, so this is one of the few figures that got kinda close.
this and wheeljack were some of my first transformers
I still have my sunstreaker alternator from around 2012.
Ah, Alternators. The platonic ideal of, 'they were good at the time'. ;)
Xena: (Gasp) "You removed it from its original packaging!"
I for one would love to see Alternators/Binaltech redone with modern engineering. Could be something really special!
The Tracks mold always did have really stiff legs. It's because that's where the diecast went in the Binaltech version and the plastic thighs in the Alternator didn't have the tolerances adjusted quite right.

yup LS1 baby

This last summer I finally got myself an alternators Shockwave, still in box. I absolutely adore that thing.

Yes, one of my favorites from the line!

8:41 Well duh, they're nos tanks so Vin Diesel can body slam cars at 2000mph for family safety.
No, that's actually the correct direction for the sun visors on this model (either that, or every Corvette C5 Z06 convertible owner posting pictures of their car online is doing it wrong)
@@OptimusPhillip okay thank goodness, I looked up some pictures and your right. I legit thought I was going insane for bit there.
I have Alternators GRIMLOCK, to be fair, is not difficult to transform, but the balljoints are too loose so the doors pop off every time
Alternator's are what got me back into transformers.

I can do it blind folded

I can hear the screams of the MIB collectors as TJ cut the figure out.
Me too
Not really. Alternators Battle Ravage is one of the most common Alternators figures.
Swerve was worse due to the GPS he had in the legs and arms. I had to Frankenstein him with Tracks to make Swerve complete.
Perfect timing since I just got tracks in the mail the other day
This 1 is on my list to pick up. Thanks for the review!

I still have Swindle somewhere. These were also meant to scale with the MP 1 Optimus Prime
FYI Alternators Tracks' mold never had magnets in the front tires, it was plastic

Both the Grimlock and Ravage have 'synchronized' front wheels, and Both have the plastic 'push/pull' apparatus

I hope they’ll revamp them for the Legacy toyline.

The closest we had after alternators was the human alliance line from the movie line. I miss that line...
Good old Ravage Three Bodies Evolution
Best Transformers Tomy Takara ever made
I kinda consider Binaltech as "Masterpiece - the Prototype". Really high end figures at the time with licensed vehicle alts.

Those knee joints were sooo tight on mine. The pieces are so tight they feel like they aren't supposed to move.
I got some alternity 1/32 scale transformers and those suffer from similar transformers problem, i got Dai Atlas and banzaitron plus gt maximus
The Alternator I got was Rollbar, the only one that didn’t have turning front wheels or an engine weapon.
I love the intro
Going back to car mode was the worst for these
If I may ask, what size do these Alternator toys scale up to? Voyager? Leader? Because hearing 1:24 scale for this means jack squat to me.
From what I can tell, they're roughly Voyager size. But the ultimate goal was to make the vehicles modes 1:24 scale, so the robot height may not be 100% consistent.
@@OptimusPhillip Oh, I see. Thank you for the info.

Very enjoyable video
I have all of these except 2
Bro I just went to Acme lol
Hi 👋
This was a great fig.
But when they came out with the Jaguar that became the jaguar known as Ravage, this guy needed a retooling.
So I took the head from an Alternator Prime and put him on this guy.
Thus creating Optimus Primal!
The colors & weapon placement all matches!
So cool!
Oh hey, an Alternator! I've got Sideswipe I really love, I wonder what TJ thinks of that one!
Oh.
Oh...
i had sideswipe too bc the viper is my favorite car , i ended up selling him bc over time i ended up agreeing w tj its not a good figure
