When I'm into a run and not really feeling it, I try to think of being grateful that I can still run and train at 64 , while so many people who I know would love to run, but just can't or won't do it. There is a certain pride that comes from toughing a run out when you aren't at your best, and yes, I always feel better having done it.
Hi Thomas, at 63 it is good for me too to still be able to do 5 and 10 km runs at a fairly good time for a person that not really exersize during the week. Keep it up
The mantra is a really good strategy. Mine tends to be "I've done tougher things" because most of the time it's true. My other strategy is to divide the race up into smaller distances. I just think of a half as four 5Ks. Then it's not so daunting.
@ about7:28 "Don't let social media, or Strava fool you, I've had to pull myself out of some deep dark places to get out and run." As a new runner, this is me many days! Thank you for your authenticity, Morgan! Great video!
I have kept a training journal for 20+ years. When I hit a lull in my training in June, I went back and saw that same lull in each of the last few years - in mid June. Its at least reassuring.
There’s nothing silly in knowing how to talk to yourself in a kind and reassuring way! It is of the utmost importance to know how to convince yourself to do the best you can! Good video!
My longest distance is a 15k, which I trained about 1 month for… had previously only ran 10k, now I’m training for the coveted half marathon… a challenge for anyone who is still somewhat of a beginner, I’ve been running since my teens, but have only gotten into longer runs in the last 2ish years… I’m 29 now, so, I feel the challenge, but man is it rewarding at the end!
Put me in coach. I did my 20 miles a couple weeks ago, not too bad at all I was right at 3 hours with a pace of 175 spm. Now adding road cycling to keep myself from Injury of all the impact on the joints. I did 20 miles on the bike yesterday.
When I ran my first marathon I felt that 5k was tougher. More because the 3.1 miles was something I felt I could "sprint" per se and I knew I could go slower and pace myself in the marathon. I still struggle with the 5k pacing.
AT FIRST, I AM NOT ENGLISH USING SO SORRY. I HAD BEEN INJURY TO IT BAND AND RIGHT KNEE 8MONTHS. 1WEEKS AGO DOCTOR SAID YOU ARE RECOVERED. SO... I RAN 5K AGIAN. AND TODAY I READ THIS VIDEO TITLE TO GET HOPE. THX MORGAN. I LOVE YOU♡
Listen I went to 5k did two 10k last two weeks and today ran a half marathon, I’m 17 stone, I felt like my breathing and body adapted to the run at miles 6-7 but the last couple of miles was really tough. Push on keep going
This is so motivating, Coach Morgan! These principles could be applied to my triathlon training, too. I'm going to watch this several times throughout the following months for consistent motivation. Thank you! Happy training to you, too! :)
Currently training for a half and its been really rainy here in the UK. I actually like the rain though I think its refreshing, especially because I get hot and sweaty when running!
Good point with the weather! I feel like some of the best-feeling runs come in the most questionable conditions. I’m from SF! Some of my favorite runs are on a damp, foggy night up near Skyline or on the Great Highway
Very insightful (and entertaining). I think discipline is absolutely necessary too. I tend to go hard and far in my runs coz I'd feel energized and excited even tho I need to keep it easy and simple.
Hello Coach Morgan. Thank you for your honest perspective especially on slowly building. I don't want to inadvertently cause myself injury because I over did my training. Love the idea of keeping a running journal. 👍
Thank you! I am currently training for a half marathon, and you had some really good tips. It is encouraging to know that even elite runners sometimes have to drag themselves off the couch to go for a run. 😹
No way 5k s at race pace are a lot harder den half marathons. A half marathon once a nice confortable heartbeat and pace is established it’s all smooth sailing
5Ks races are all out effort 90 to 95% VO2 Max. This is utilizing the unaerobic system which is a recipe for disaster in racing 13.1 miles. I think a better title is “essentials for Half Marathon training” because all she mentioned are important to have a successful training and racing. ✌️👍
Good video coach Morgan, yeah that’s true about getting use to rainy conditions, teaches you to get the right shoes gear for all weathers, I enjoy the odd times running in rainy cold, but not all the time, don’t think it’s any good to be hammering & torturing the body higher chance of injury, I think best thing for people training for first marathon is just concentrate on finishing the half marathon don’t worry about time, that’s true about start out slow, but I have to say, my best time I got in a half marathon was last year, took off fast as I could at the beginning & did my best time, but did a really good warm up before the race started 👍
Is it realistic to think I can run a half marathon with 8 weeks of training? I have run a full marathon in November 2020... in June 2021 I'd had 2 consecutive brain surgeries and woke up from the second one completely incapable of moving my arms and legs... I've since; FULLY RECOVER praise God! That being said; I'd LOVE to sign up for the race coming up in November 19th! I just got clearance to train again and bought a new pair of shoes Yesterday! I'm chomping at the bit to train again but don't want to get too far ahead of myself and end up hurting myself! Any advice?
Living in New England and absolutely despising running in winter (I switch to hiking) could you share those personal opinions about winter running? I'll need all the help I can get keeping it going this winter.
winter running makes you tough, it’s more mental than anything else. we tend to think that an hour run out in the cold will be the worst thing ever, and yes it can seem that way but it’s not likely that it’s SO cold that we’re going to be frostbite or hypothermia. warmup before, make sure you have the proper clothes, pop in a good playlist and plan out a hot meal for when you get back.
I winter hike in our beastly White Mountains, and I'm guessing Chad is familiar too, since he snowshoes? You get used to the layers and emergency gear... it's the running I struggle with. When I was 14 I was training for a 5k, slipped on ice and fell on my back... right into a steaming pile of dog crap. My waist length hair was FULL. I seriously haven't run in winter since, and it's been almost 30 years! Lol I'm determined, this winter is the one!
@@Kelly_Ben Kelly, the ice is the worst and worrying about slipping and risking getting hurt. You have some real with the White Mtns, I'm out in the Berkshires in Western Mass.
Thank you for your good advice🙂 You can afford to live in San Francisco as a single person it's not that hard to train for a half marathon. Just called back and forth across the Golden Gate Bridge a few times just save all kinds of money.lol
I'm a beginner, I do a 5k 3-4 times a week, I say that but (full disclosure) I walk and slowly jog for must of that time. With a few Sprints here and there. My question is, when I do my long run, should I be running more in that 5k and try do it faster and walk/jog less? Or should I do the same pattern but for a longer distance?
No thanks! 5ks are about pure speed, which I don't have much of. That last mile is pure torture for me. What I DO have is stubbornness, which works great on longer slower distances.
Did not get any information on form ,the drills to do for 3 months , the exercises to warm up or to build the stamina for marathon . The video is such a disappointment. Only empty talk .
My 5ks feel like half marathon

This one speaks truth.
Haha yes
So true 🤣
I am at the point where a mile feels like that. Just starting out. 😂

I struggle with depression and Fibromyalgia, man sometimes it is very hard to go for a run but I know I will feel better after! Thank you Coach!! 🙏🏻😎🏆
Have you tried a ketogenic diet?...
John M yes I tried it just not for me, but thank you for the recommendation! 🙏🏻
I'm surprised you can run with FM. Does it not exacerbate the problem?

Plenty of athletes (and ordinary people) use self talk and visualising.
what about a video on how to make a 5k feel like a day on the couch
😁😁
@@brennankaplan8225 everything is relative.
@@brennankaplan8225 nah, it depends on the person there are a lot variables, you can't generalise on that

Run some 200km ultras

Is great to know that most of the runners have the "I don't wanna run" feeling.
Thank you. This is exactly what I needed to hear to get my butt off the couch. Going for a run today and I will use your expert advice.

I always look at 5k as a race "race" it only last for 20 mins....so yes go all out.

we’re talking more about the distance of a 5k, not necessarily the speed 😃
definitely in camp "5k's suck more than halfs" haha
I was about to make a similar comment, along the lines of "but 5ks suck really bad, why would you want to do that to yourself" lol
we’re talking more in terms of distance here 😃

“12 week to 3 month training plan” isn’t 12 weeks equal to 3 months?
Will this also make my marathon feel like a 10k?

5k's can be nasty, as many people go harder on the shorter distances. Nonetheless, good video !
