Recently the Czech people headed to the polls to select a new parliament and a new leader. Yesterday and handover of power finally happened with a coalition of parties who dislike current PM Babis joining forces to kick him out of office. So in this video, we unpack what happened, why Babis was kicked out, and what this new disparate coalition could mean for the Czech Republic.

"Far right SPD" is something that to me, as a German, just sounds odd. But i guess identical acronyms can mean vastly different ideologies in countries that don't speak the same language.
Hey just think of how it sounds to us in the USA. most "Far right" political groups in europe barely qualify as right wing to us. And even that is mostly because they just want some sort of limits on immigration.
Yes, its funny from the Czech side too. German SPD is Social Democrats, while Czech SPD is "Svoboda a Přímá Demokracie"/Freedom and Direct Democracy Party. However, especially in English, its can sometimes be a bit confusing. Very different ideologies from one another too. The Czech anti-immigration SPD is also, funnily enough, led by a half-Japanese politician named Tomio Okamura. :D

In Czech Republic politic party similar to german SPD is KDU-ČSL. Czech SPD is conservative nationalist and populist party, with wery controversional opinions (for example denying holocaust). It uses desinformations as propagation. Definetly something else :D
EDIT: I've got the names wrong. KDU-ČSL is a czech version of CDU not SPD. Something truthly smilar to SPD in Czech Republic doesn't really exist (maybe ČSSD, probably not).

I know nothing about this party in particular, I just know that most parties in europe that get the "far right" label are mostly "We should do something about immigration, We spend too much money, and Maybe we should decentralize things a bit" All reasonable positions that just qualify as center right.

The coalition should agree on a limited number of urgent political measures and keep their differences and fights behind very closed doors. If they manage to do that, they manage the pandemic and they approve the next budget, they could then go for new elections.
If they fight openly, Babis will be back.

This is a coalition that won't last two years. We've seen those opportunistic coalitions in Poland before and none of them made it full term. Once they run out of things they can agree on, the government will simply collapse. They should use this time to push through the most urgent matters, and gather enough support before the next, early elections. Generally speaking, those who achieve at least some of what they promised, and call for early elections first will be the winners.
@@B3RyL I don't think that's the case here now. First, Czechs generally hate anybody who calls for early election and sink them disregarding the other circumstances :D Second, there are so many non-ideological issues that need fixing right now, that the government shouldn't run out of them in 4 years. Third, all the parties are very much aware of the Babiš's threat if they do not act like saints and cooperate without bickering. Overall, I'm optimistic about their prospects, if they can get the government past the president.

Well, I am not sure... But it seems to me that, because of this political sistem these czechs had to dialogue (and make a political alliance) on a way that Bolsonaro - nor his three politicians sons - would never learn in his entire life.

Many times it is much easier to watch or listen to Austrian politics than things about Czechia.
Sometimes it is even easier to watch here about the king in Liechtenstein than about the Czechs and their life.
For me it is very sad and not fair.
Very well made video. I can confirm that everything is correct factually, especially the fears about the new coalition's cohesion. However, they do agree on some key parts, like funding infrastructure and reforming the judicial system to disentangle it from the Babiš's empire. My biggest fear is their budgetary plans, which I don't find very realistic. They are adamant on not raising taxes and cutting bureaucratic expenses to save the sinking public finances. But that is always much easier said than done, and I expect them to change their position on taxes. The populists before put them too low in my opinion, and the country famously has trouble meeting even its regular expenses like govt employee salaries or pensions.
Though to be honest, unless there is broad public support, raising taxes is fundamentally political suicide mostly in capitalist countries especially when businesses benefit from very low taxes. Again, you'd need broad public support to get them to specifically raise taxes in order for them to at the very least reconsider. Emphasize how low current taxes are, and you have a strong argument. You just need strong publicity and support to make raising taxes in this case look more like a political success rather than political suicide.
@@kioshi-4588 it will be political suicide, Babis owns the largest media conglomerate and czechs havent felt this wealth in a long while. sadly i can see a harder populist swing in the next election if Babis runs again and smaller parties wont have the power to stop him from turning Czech authoritarian.

Bulgaria is currently trying to agree on a 6 party coalition(one of the parties is actually a coalition of 3 different ones, thus they are 6 rather than 4) in the midst of record inflation, lowest vaccination rate in the EU(only 22%) and still having to battle the mafia that the previous government(still very influential) has left. So it looks like a interesting time for European politics.
I don't think they are as divided as they seem. Pirates were the biggest potential troublemakers, but now they don't have the power nor incentives to sabotage the efforts. They have two ministers, which is insanely high number since they have only 4 MPs so they should be content with that. And if they aren't, they can leave the coalition and it would still have house majority so they have no blackmail option like the communists did in the last government.

Pirates and Mayors had a coalition agreement concerning splitting the ministerial seats and the Mayors don't want to break it so they exerted pressure on SPOLU to give Pirates two ministers. But I agree with you that two ministers for 4 MPs is too much. One would be more than enough.

Here the billionare with all the possible media advantage and all the possible conflict of interest was Mr B himself.
He was narrowly defeated by a huge coalition "L'Unione" that did not agree on anything.
B took it so bad and personal.
He ended up destroing the government in less than 2 years, forcing another election, and then getting his biggest electoral victory ever in 2008, just before the Big Financial Crisis, when he mismanaged the ship so spectacularly we almost defaulted.
Good times.

Babiš (ano) lost because no other party would join him, so he didn’t have enough seats. The president would have chosen him over any other party if he had a coalition. Babiš is still very popular with the public (it’s the way he talks) and will now probably run for the Presidency with support from the current president
Thats what happens with populist parties in europe, in Finland the social democrats made a big coalition with all the other parties instead of working with our populist party, somehow the greens got both interior and foreign affairs minister.

Two problems with this video: 1) President Zeman has not been specific about who he has a problem with nor what the problem is. It is presumed that it is Pirates candidate Lipavsky, but no one confirmed that officially. 2) The new coalition has quite a big overlap in their programs. Only Pirates are somehow different but they are not even necessary for the coalition to have a majority.
Might want to check latest "Otázky Václava Moravce.". Can't remember the name right now, but the identity of the person was revealed there.

As someone born in Saxony I wish to know more about Czech republic and all things there. I am very grateful for this video and I wish to know as much as possible about a country that was once the infrastructure and industry core of Austrian Empire, then 8th world economy as Czechoslovakia, under communist regimes it was pumping so much money to all the communist countries and their allies like Cuba! Now it's even more mysterious place and I know so very little - and I am now in Prague, but can't read newspapers or watch news. I am asking people and getting such fantastic bits and pieces of informations! I don't know what's a truth and what is just rumour. I would like to know how is it really with Okamura party, that true hardcore Stalinist party, president and those two expresidents of Czechs, various Mafias influence over the country, Velvet revolution, society and public opinions or its relationshiop with Poland, Slovak and Hungarian republic. What is with that trend to have old-wreck type of guy as a president? They are the least concerned about environment and actuall long term progress. Why would anyone vote for them?
Just as many can go the opposite way you know, old men not long for the world often look to leave some sort of lasting "legacy" behind.
He's serving his second (and last by the constitution) 5-year term. Also, he did a lot in politics since the fall of the communism and is great at one thing - pissing off people. There are a lot of people here who feel (often times rightfully so) that they lost in the transformation and pissing the winners off is a good aim for them. Those are the people who he successfully targeted.
Because he was very openly anti-immigration and vulgar and people had known him for decades. That's literally it. There were billboards like "I'll protect you from the migrants" all over the country and his opponent from academic background was labelled as an out-of-touch puppet representing the "Prague café" (an anti-intelligence slur invented by Zeman).
That's unfortunate. The Pirate movement gaining ground would have been absolutely huge.

Please do more research on pronunciation, if people from east can do that in english, You can do that for couple of words in slavic languages.

This is not fair. Everyone learns English, so most people speak two languages: their own and English. This doesn't mean that English people should learn ALL other languages. I would like to see you try Dutch names/words, for example. Sure, it would be nice if the pronunciation was 100% correct, but it is not essential for the video.

It's not like the examples here would be difficult for a native English speaker to pronounce either... the czech š sound is the same as the English sh sound, and the o in Ano is pronounced like a flat o, not as a 'u'.

there is other reason as well. They had 2/3 of candidates on the vote ballot because in preferencies they were mutch biger party than Starostové a nezavislý. But here you can either cast the balot only or you can circle you desireble candidates on balot. (its calld preferencial votes) And basicly local mayors and other regionaly known personalities from that movement outjumpt them. ( you have 4 pref. voltes and candidates who got more than 5% pref. from all votest for the cand. list can outjump candidates above.) Pirates voters usualy vote for whole list without pref., starostove a nez. voters usualy used perf. votes for their candidates. So they gaind so mutch form the system. (Last election, they nearly didnt made it to the parlament with 5,1% and now they are 3rd biggest party in parlament.

Opposition forces from across the field joining up to take out incumbent corrupt right-wing regimes seems to be a bit of a trend right now. I'm from Bulgaria and that's what we've been trying to do for the past 8 months, so far without much success
The new government is Right-wing. ANO is the center and in coalition with ČSSD, they were the center-left government. Also, this is the first time in history when we do not have any true social left-wing party in parliament. I truly do not get why the west has the need to call left and right everything as in the stupid US dual-party system. In Czech politics, we use terms left and right only for economic affairs. ODS is right wind, conservative, slightly nationalistic (because they are eurosceptics) liberals. And in fact, they are closer to ANO than to their coalition partners. The biggest difference is that ODS represents rich Praguers and ANO is more social and represents more countryside.
It's hard to pull things to the centre when the far right mobilized and successfully shifted the Overton window

Can someone knowledgeable about Czech politics explain what in the world the Communists and social democrats doing supporting the Babis government?
Well they did loose the election, because of that....
I think its because few others would work with him, to stop him working with the far-right and because he was willing to meet them halfway on things they supported. Babis is seen is relatively economically left-wing compared to say the new government, even if he is a bit conservative.
The Social Democrats did it to prevent the Babiš coalition and the extremist SPD and the Communists, because Babiš promised them things that he did not fulfill
Slovak here, but it's pretty similar to Czech politics around here. In our countries, communists and social democrats are more like populist conservative parties than leftist pro-worker parties of the West. They mostly use communist nostalgia among the population and poorly thought out social policy to attract voters to stay in power for as long as possible, meaning they are very often pretty corrupt.
They claim that it is their duty to stop Babis from governing with the conservative center-right parties. But it is clear that their representatives are power-hungry hypocrites and wanted the seats in the government and the parliament for themselves. The social democrats governed with Babis from 2013 (they had the PM at the time) to 2017. The communists have lost most of their older voters to Babis (so it was a mistake for them).

This could've been worded better. It's not clear whether the President is seeking to get rid of the Pirate nominee because the Pirate nominee is anti-China and anti-Russia (I assume this is the case from context), or because the President is anti-China and anti-Russia (and the Pirate nominee, implicitly, not that).
The minister managed to block Chinese and Russian companies from signing up for expanding one of our nuclear power plants - The president is salty about it since he would like the country to be part of Russia :D
Pirates are for human rights, so they don't like Russia and China. But President Zeman is pragmatic so he wants to keep good relations with Russia and China

The new parties might not be the most stable, but if they all truly wish for the best Czech future, I believe they will do at least somewhat well.
All of the parties in the current coalition are rather well established with the two newest (TOP 09 and Pirates) being founded in 2009 and all having some experience on all levels of the political ladder with the exception of Pirates not having been in the governmental coalition yet (but were a decent opposition last term).

Yes, because they have 10 percent support. Mayors and Independets have 33 seats only because most of pirate voters didnt bother to choose their prefered candidate.
They are much stronger party in reality than on paper. I dont know how it works elsewhere but here you can pick specific candidates to get your votes when you go to the ballot.
Pirates and Mayors had a single ballot list so by default you split it 50/50 when you put it in. However if you pick candidates from one side the vote goes to them. Most Mayor voters circled Mayors only while Pirate voters generally didnt mind Mayors so they just didnt circle (my case for example) this leads to the outcome being 75% for Mayors and 25% for Pirates provided there is even split on voters (which is likely). As such they cant really treat pirates as unimportant.
The other thing is that Mayors and Pirates went in with the decision to split evenly on everything no matter what (they even talked about switching PM half way through the mandate) so it would be very bad advertisement to not keep to it when the tables turn, which the Mayors wouldnt risk as they are currently possibly the "cleanest/trustworthy" party in the politics for general public
A few things to remember.
No country should be run by a government of just one party. Such systems are for countries like North Korea and China and sadly also for some English speaking countries.
No country should have just one or two parties.

From my point of view the biggest core problem is Babiš himself. If he´s not in the politics, then the parties return to their normal programs, competing left wing vs right wing, liberals vs conservatives and it will again become normal democratic competition, not with this idiotic Babiš, Czech Berlusconi doing populist bad short-term destructvie politics and anticorruption while he's one of the most corrupt politicians himself. Its incredible how one person can cause such a chaos in the whole country just by his presence. If he cared about our country he would step out from the high politics, because he sees how it destroys the country.

You know, they really cover a blind spot on the social / political spectrum, which is not covered well by existing parties - elwctorate of traditional social parties based on unions is 50+ village bumpkins, and conservative right parties of Margaret Thather style surelly dont cover young, liberal city folk, with quite leftist opinions, who see a big corporate and laissez fair more as a threat than opportunity , and, sincerely, quite failing system. It is the same people who would vote for Bernie, for example.

This reminds me of Israel's political situation quite a bit, where a bunch of political parties even more diverse, ranging from communists to far-right islamists but mainly dominated by center-right and leftist parties united as one massive coalition against bibi. They managed to govern pretty well at least until now, so I hope czechia will also be able to govern competently.

@@phongduong7486 ra'am, the far-right islamist party that was too radical even for the joint list, a part of Islamic movement and strongly oposses things like zionism or gay rights. They were very often blamed to be connected to terrorists, and while they probably aren't they still are very favorable towards them. In my opinion the Israeli Left's reliance on Arab voters as a counterbalance to ultra-orthodox voters on the right is not very sustainable, and they should try to get more voters to move to them rather than to ally with the Arab parties. For instance, many communists vote for the Arab joint list instead of the Jewish leftist parties, since it includes hadash, which is a Marxist-Leninist party. They should try to get those voters back rather than rely on a demographic that will eventually outnumber them and is strongly opposed to many of the Israeli Left's core values.
There are no leftist parties in Israel. It's a right-wing shithole.

On the left there are parties like the aforementioned hadash that are so anti-zionist and communist they oppose the existence of almost any state let alone Israel, and on the other side of the spectrum you have far-right religious extremists, both Jewish like otzma yehudit and Islamic like ra'am. Israel has more political diversity than America or any European country by a long shot, and while I don't think it's a good thing since it legitimizes some horrible people but it is absurdly wrong to call it a one-party state.

there is other reason for Pirates poor reason as well. They had 2/3 of candidates on the vote ballot because in preferencies they were mutch biger party than Starostové a nezavislý. But here you can either cast the balot only or you can circle you desireble candidates on balot. (its calld preferencial votes) And basicly local mayors and other regionaly known personalities from that movement outjumpt them. ( you have 4 pref. voltes and candidates who got more than 5% pref. from all votest for the cand. list can outjump candidates above.) Pirates voters usualy vote for whole list without pref., starostove a nez. voters usualy used perf. votes for their candidates. So they gain so mutch form the system. (Last election, they nearly didnt made it to the parlament with 5,1% and now they are 3rd biggest party in parlament.
