I can't stop listening to this. Every few weeks I have to hear it to keep my spirits up and I am no relation or even fellow countryman to him and this video. It's just so pure and perfect and beyond words. The whistle is totally uplifting, so so beautiful.
I wasn't there, wish I had been, and I don't think you'd have to be to see the beauty and hear the meaning, but that's just me. George *spells* authenticity. How he, over time, has evolved this song, kept it alive, well I feel privileged to be able to click on an internet site and hear this. Simple for me: beautiful soul.
When I want to feel close to my Creator, I put this clip on and have a good cry.... GB was such a stylish genius angel. This wajela mourns him so much x
This is the first time i have heard George sing this in his Yolngu matha (language) glad i cliked on this vid, my Torres Strait mate John Barsah is singing along in the background, Rest In Peace George!
I've never even heard of this guy or band. That is the most beautiful man singing a beautiful song. I do wish someone would have booted that woman off the stage because she is ruining the vibe. Some nerve some people have!!
I just saw this on Anu's office website: "George Burrarrawanga was the man who first sung life into "My Island Home" when he performed it as the lead singer of the Warumpi band. He was the man who made My Island Home resonate in the hearts of the Aboriginal people long before the whole of Australia embraced it. In my eyes, George was Australia's original Aboriginal rock singer and a great Indigenous Australian. He will be sadly missed by the Anu family"
You could be very close to the truth! Lots of Indigenous artists better than most POPULAR "artists". Maningrida, Galiwinku, Bidydanga, Central Desert produce wonderful musicians! Well at least this whitefella thinks so!
i doubt you'd be able to pronounce them ;-) translated literally the words are quite different to the 'whitefella' version. RIP dahmul....we miss you SO much. What an entertainer this man was - especially in front of his people (which he isn't in this clip). I dunno if I'll ever got over the sadness of losing George.
hmmm - i had George's solo album once - but it went on holiday and never came back. canya tell me where i can get it again ...or download an mp3? i got it at one of his gigs. interesting - christine anu's version has changed a lot of the words.....no sitting around the camp fire with his brothers. George was so funny ...wonder if there are any of his comedy type clips anywhere? i think Geroge was victim to a Maralinga radioactive cloud - he was born when there was a cloud. R.I.P. Balla
Best version of the song I've found on UA-cam, but I'd really like to see the performance from the Big Name No Blanket documentary, where he starts off wearing a black cape and flings it off when the drums come in, to reveal the Aboriginal flag vest, pants, shoes and scarf. It's absolute magic! It really captured both the poetic beauty of the song (in Language and then in English) and George's incredible charisma, stage presence and humour. It looked like it was performed in a concert hall and maybe even the Opera House. It's a big stage and there is an orchestral string quartet up there. Anyone know where this was performed and whether there is a video of it outside of the documentary?

Jaahda Jinnah, can you get me a copy of the Yolngu matha words ? A mate of mine wants to sing it with me. We both used to work with Yolngu in the Top End. We’d be able to do justice to the pronunciation I think. Thanks, djut djut na
Interesting comments,Just for the Record all i can say is if George didn't want this on here it wouldn't have been put here in the first place, The Inspiration to do what i do comes from our Ancestors Burarrwanga's not peoples comments,
Thank you
Much respect 🙏

In my book, George is the Aboriginal Bob Dylan.
