Hi Lao! Pelikan is very popular in my pen club due to most of the members attending the yearly Pelikan Hub meetings that happens on September 22 all around the world. So happy you are trying non Leo pens😂…Pelikan are known for their piston filling system and their nibs but that’s why Pelikan pens will last decades. One of the pen club members will be bringing his Pelikan pens for me to try and he wants to get into more modern Pelikan pens. But for me I love the the classic Souveran…hunting for a Brown Black and a vintage Green black. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, Arlene. Yes, I have ALWAYS wanted to try these Pelikans out, but the shiny Leonardos really just distract me from saving and purchasing these beauties. I always knew Pelikans were good...I just didn't know they were THIS GOOD :D And I can see why the giant price tag on these now...but...so expensive!!! Can't wait for you to try them at your pen meet! The Pelikan Hub here in Minneapolis was...private, so I didn't know where it was. I know you had to register, but some hubs allowed the public penthusiasts to join if you forgot to register, so I was very sad I couldn't join mine. However, my friend's hub was public and they had tons of extra goodies, so she got me some Pelikan hub goodies!!
Wonderful pens! I too have less pleasant handwriting at the bottom of the page, especially when my journal is in my lap. I have 13 Pelikans in total. One more coming for Christmas that I’ll share soon. Pelikan is my absolute favorite pen (pen brand) of all that I own. There is so much to love -the cap, piston, and especially the nibs. I do love the weight and size of my m200/205, m400s, and m101n blue grey with a 14k nib. Of the thirteen pens, five have broad nibs. Enjoy your Pelikan writing experience!
Well done on these two pens…. My small hand would love the M 600 but I doubt I will ever go to that price point, so it’s nice to watch your video. I can’t write well at the bottom of a page either 🤪
Thank you, Jean! And yean, I agree. If the M600 could be 250 dollars, they'll get more buyers, but they probably might not make the profit they are going for. Absolutely stunning pen if it was 250 USD. But 450-600 for an M600 with how small of a pen it is, it is sad and unaffordable for most of us. Hope you can try one out someday, though! It's such a cute classic looking small-medium-ish sized pen, and that much I enjoy about it aside from the writing experience :)
That 605 is tiny! 😲 your size comparisons are fantastic; thank you. If I were persuing a Pelikan, it would be the M1000. The size is much better, cleaning is easier, and the nib is beautiful. Congrats on another grail and thanks for sharing with us! I hope you share again after it has been bedazzled with raden. 😍
Thank you, Amy!! I'm happy I was able to portray the pen for what it truly is. The way the pen looks really makes it seem more of a regular sized pen - but the more I use it, the more I get used to its smaller size :) But knowing me and you, M1000 is the way to go, but alas, the price!! xD Try one out someday at a pen show if you get the chance ♥ And I will be sure to post an amazing video showcasing all the work done on my Raden M1000 in the future ^_^
My Kaweco medium nib os my favorite, and right in between a Lamy fine and medium. It looks like a Pelikan EF may be pretty nice. Thanks for the great video!
Hi Creed, you're very welcome and thank you so much for watching and commenting!! I love my Kaweco mediums, too. Such a lovely line width for every day use. Glad the video was helpful for you!
Woohoo!! :D Thank you, Katie!! I will definitely be enjoying them! I have now obtained 3 grails outside of Leonardo xD (Visconti HS, Pelikan, and ???) I will share my 3rd grail soon!!
Very good comparison. The M605 is a great pen. It´s not really tiny. It´s the same with wrist watches. Over time they got bigger and bigger and once you are used to the bigger ones, what was normal in the past looks tiny today. The Pelikan M800/805 is the sweet spot for me in the Souverän line, it has a comparable size to the Lamy Safari. And I agree, Pelikan nibs sizes are rather on the bigger side. I have several ones and F is more like like an M.
Thanks, Bo! You're right, we've become used to larger pens and prefer that as time passes. As I'm using my m605 more now, it feels pretty normal! I just couldn't get over how small I perceived it to be the first moment I opened the box. I am now on the hunt for the perfect first m800 to add to my flock of Pelikans. They're very great pens! And because of how broadly their tipping gets, I believe I will only be collecting EFs and Fines. But I'll definitely like to try out broads and double broads at Pen shows just to get a feel for them.
Great comparison. From my experience, The TR paper makes the lines look thicker, kind of like the onionskin paper. If you try the same pen on Clairfontaine paper, you'll find it does write much finer comparatively. Another thing I have noticed from my experience is that the tines on the EF m1000 easily get out of sorts, making it write much broader, or toothier. And it is hard to put back together. I have learned overtime that for F and EF nibs of M1000, I must exert pretty much no pressure. That is how I can get a fine line from M1000/1005 EF. Cheers.
Hi Shak! Thank you for your lovely words!! :) I do have clairfontaine paper as well and I agree with you, the coating on that paper makes my lines so much thinner! It's fascinating haha! But I do like the way TR paper absorbs the ink to make the lines thicker. Clairfontaine paper can make some of my pens not feel super smooth (hence, the line width decrease), so I don't really like that sometimes. Thank you for sharing your experience on the 1000, I do feel like that could definitely happen for me, too. I do hope they don't misalign for me anytime soon, but I do love the line variations that it makes and I'm not too bummed out about it being thicker than most Fines. It's an experience I have accepted :D I have many other EFs to work with if I really need a thin line, but as you said, no pressure at all is also a possible way to use the m1000 for lovely thin strokes! :)
I don't have a Pelikan but I'm thinking of saving up for one. either I buy a Pelikan or a Vanishing Point in next year's pen show. I want to feel them both first. I love this review I think an EF for me is best since I have small handwriting.
Yes! It's always great to make sure you feel it in your hands first, especially if it is going to be a very expensive purchase! I'm glad the video helped you confirm the nib choice for your future Pelikan :D and hope to see you in a future pen show! Are you thinking of going to the SF Pen show next year? Gorgeous duo!!! I just got my M1000 too, it’s coming in the mail TODAY!!!! I got the green stripes. I have M800 and the M805 both in black, so I wanted something different for my 1000…. I am so excited
@@deniseplasse5126 oooo let me know if the green stripes have tiny sparkles in them!! I've been told and seen that the black or brown stripes have very pretty small shimmers throughout the stripes.
I agree - The Pelikan EF is just the perfect line width for me and it's a very lovely daily writing nib size. The ink in the Sailor is the ink that was made for the pen. Summer Rain is the Sailor, the ink is Sailor Shikiori Zaza (torrential rain sound). Hope that helps! It's a lovely deep blue!
@@psunemi17 Yeah, it's pretty much a blue black! But it's a wet ink, so it writes pretty dark in my Sailor. A different nib might get the lighter tones/shades of the deep blue.
Hey DDawg! You’re very welcome ☺️ I’m so happy you found this helpful. I had the exact same issue and thought around this, so I made sure to answer that question and make it a resource for everyone. Hope you enjoy your M1000 EF (or another nib size) when you get one :) Thanks so much for watching.
@@KenchanKrafts Cheers. Unfortunately your video confirmed my fears - the EF nib is also comically wet and broad like the other sizes. I am coming to the points of accepting that I'll probably need to have an EF or F nib stubbed if I want anything remotely fine-writing. The M800 EF nib is a nice size for me (Japanese FM/M) it just seems to jump up majorly with the M1000. I did notice you wrote you the main sample pretty heavy handed and I write very lightly so perhaps it won't be as broad if I'm not spreading the tines as much.
@@DDawg1144 haha yes, I do have a heavy hand when writing, 20 years of writing in school with pencils that I have to unlearn with fountain pens. But hopefully the thinner lines before the slight pressure writing gives you an idea of its thinnest lines when written with a light touch. Paper also affects this line since tomoe river paper absorbs ink pretty nicely and lines tend to be broader on here than like clairefontaine paper. The alternative too is to have your M1000 grounded to a specialty grind that fits your writing style. But I know this isn’t accessible to everyone. If you ever get a chance though, JC from The Nib Tailor does a beautiful pindot grind that restricts ink flow just enough to still flow well but comes out at a very thin point. I really enjoyed it since I like thinner lines sometimes. It’s a really great option for a thin nib grind. JC explained it as the grind before needlepoint.
How long will it take to get radened? Have you had that done before? I didn’t even know that was a possibility. Not that it’s in my measly budget but…. 😅
Hi Lorelei! Yes, it can be RADENED!! XD I saw it on Instagram and I was bedazzled, I needed it, too!! I will need to think of a design and if I want maki-e on it or just mother of pearl raden shells. The cost is $350+ depending on design and the artist. It takes about 3-4 months (after the queue/wait-list) since they'll put layers of urushi on top of the layers of raden and let it dry over that period of time. Also will need to be sent over to their shop (most of which are in Japan or overseas). XD I'm super excited about this project ^_^ Thanks for watching!
DAMN!! Yes, you did say you love your juicy broads! I just don't know how ya'll do that!! TRIPLE BROAD? Do you journal with such big tips? :D I think the EF already will provide me with good headers and stuff, but it's also nice for daily writing if I write lightly. My next Pelikan will be a Fine :D I...don't even know if I want to venture to a Medium Pelikan. Will need to test that out at a hub or pen show next time I go! I was too hasty and only tried what I knew I wanted to try out.
@@KenchanKrafts I've never liked fine points, even with ballpoints. I don't mind Western gold fine nibs sometimes, because they write broader. Yes I write with my broad nibs in my journals, but that is a problem because I can't use an A5. It's too small, and getting into A4s are expensive, and a bit too big. I like to have a journal that'll be about 18 cm wide. Not easy to find that with fp friendly paper. Plus, I like a super smooth nib, and the broader you go, generally the smoother it is. My M1000 broad is super duper smooth. No feedback. Even my mediums have just a hint of audible feedback. Even my steel Pelikan broad is smooth.
@@ironmic9244 Hell yeah ! I guess I assumed it will have almost no feedback the broader you go. I will say I am intrigued just to have a 3B just to see what I can do with them haha. I get writing with such a smooth Pelikan will have its own array of experience.
@@KenchanKrafts I love a 3B. Depending on the nib, it might sing. I have a SCRIBO 3B that squeaks like a sharpie. I love it. The smoothest nib, with as good as no feedback is OMAS.
@@ironmic9244 sir, you'll need to recommend me with a link to a good omas pen. I need one, JUST 1, the right one, in my collection someday :) I trust your judgment. I like a smooth pen that has no feedback, if I can control the writing. BENUs are too smooth and I lose control of it sometimes. Like not lose lose control but, it's not a pleasant feeling.
I love these pens. I think I want my first gold nib pen to be a Pelikan. I have been drawn to them since I first started. I love the m600. I cannot write at the bottom of the page, or the right margin on the left page. My handwriting goes to hell when I get there.
xD Yessss, I'm not the only one, it's utterly terrible writing at the bottom! I hope you get your first gold nib Pelikan someday soon ^_^ The m400s are just way too small, and the m800 becomes slightly heavier and longer and more expensive. I think m600 is a perfect middle ground and best for smaller hands. What M600 design were you looking at as your first?
Those are such beautiful pens! Thanks for showing size comparisons. It helped me to better understand the scale of the M1000. Congrats on getting such beautiful pens at great prices! I look forward to seeing your raden pen 😊
Thanks, Kristen! I think the initial shock of how small it is disappears with time, but I'm very happy to share my experiences and comparison. I am so happy with the prices I got them at! I'm sure...in a better time when we aren't in this inflationary time, the prices of these Pelikans can probably go down a bit T_T We can only hope! ♥ And yes, please look forward to the raden/maki-e design work I'll be planning for it ^_^
That's a great question, Sijal! You're lucky I'm at my desk and this question piqued my interest! I just did a writing test with them both. The Pelikan EF writes just a tiny bit thinner than the 823 Medium, but otherwise, they would write very similar line width with the same ink. I have a drier ink in my Pelikan at the moment. I prefer the Pelikan M1000 EF nib to the Custom 823 M. I would rate the feedback of the Pelikan a 3/10 (1 being no feedback, 10 being too much feedback) and the Custom 823 a 2/10. Both are smooth and the feedback feels amazing on both, but I think I like the Pelikan just because it is a touch louder of a feedback. The EF Pelikan can write western Fine when you write lightly up to a Western B when flexed. I like it!
I possess 5 Pelikan Pens. The Thing is, for my hand, I just enjoy writing with the M800 and M1000. I like the fact that the piston mechanism in both pens is made out of metal. I also have one M400 and one M600. They are very lightweight the nib is too stiff. I hope to find a M1005 in F!
What’s your opinion regarding japnese F (pilot) , sailor (M, MF) vs Pelican (EF)? After using m400 (M) I feel it’s a water gun 😂. My friend told me use it for 1 week.,I said no never😀😀 Don’t try to give me a good answer because every time you force me for a NPD.😅😅 You prove yourself as a trustworthy friend for me.❤❤❤❤🙏🙏
Haha you are so silly! I appreciate your friendship very much! Pelikan EF is best nib size for daily writing! F is very juicy for a fine! But it’s great for drier inks and inks that need a broad nib but when you don’t want a really broad nib to use, Pelikan F will show off lots of inks off very well! Pilot F and Sailor MF are about the same! Sailor and Pilot M is almost the same as Western M (very close to an Italian medium or jowo medium). :) I suggest a Pelikan M600 EF 😂

what ink is in the sailor MF? That m605 looks very pretty in EF.
@@KenchanKrafts Thanks for the reply!
Wow... zaza looks much more like blue black there in the video!
@@psunemi17 Yeah, it's pretty much a blue black! But it's a wet ink, so it writes pretty dark in my Sailor. A different nib might get the lighter tones/shades of the deep blue.
Thanks for this, it’s hard to get a grasp for the width of the M1000 EF nib based on reviews, this helps a ton.
@@KenchanKrafts Cool thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking a Masuyama stub.
The end credit tid bits were so cute😭
Hehehe ♥ Thanks, love!
Congrats on the M1000. It is one of my favorite pens. I have it in a broad. Juicy, wet, if I push it will go to 3B.
Great video
Thank you! :) Hope you found it helpful!
♥ And yes, please look forward to the raden/maki-e design work I'll be planning for it ^_^
Is pelican M1000 EF broader than Pilot Custom 823 M? Also is it more feedbacky than Pilot Custom 823?
I like it!
@@KenchanKrafts thanks that's extremely helpful.
Whats that notebook you use?
@@lavenderpurp6610 I’m using the Every Day Notebook from Galen Leather! It is 52gsm Tomoe River Paper. I bought it beside TR changed their paper.
My thoughts exactly on all those points! I can’t wait to get an m800! Good luck on getting your next m1005 ^_^

What’s your opinion regarding japnese F (pilot) , sailor (M, MF) vs Pelican (EF)?
After using m400 (M) I feel it’s a water gun 😂. My friend told me use it for 1 week.,I said no never😀😀
Don’t try to give me a good answer because every time you force me for a NPD.😅😅
You prove yourself as a trustworthy friend for me.❤❤❤❤🙏🙏
Haha you are so silly!
Very nice pens indeed. May I ask the you the Instagram account of the person you bought the M605 Black Tortoiseshell from?
Hi Guairenito! Thank you so much for watching and inquiring! The IG for the seller is "izumi_pen" He sells rare pens from time to time (and usually only has one or two of the pens in his posts). I also purchase through "goodpenlife" on IG. She can help search for pens in Japan for you.
@@KenchanKrafts thank you very much for the info. I have bought pens from Japan before but only through eBay. It is always better to have more options.
