At the time Glee was making a fortune on music sales. All the numbers from any episode were at the top of the iTunes charts the next day. The whole original song gig was about making even more money by not having to pay the writers of the hits they usually do. As you can tell, it didn't work out very well. "Loser Like Me" is still one of my guilty pleasure songs, though.
I don't mind what others think and I liked both songs! They both feel very personnal to me so maybe thats why but yeah....I still listen to them every once in a while! I had no idea this was the reason why they did originals...thank you!
Blackbird is literally so iconic, i get so sentimental everytime i hear this cover. This last 3 episodes are my favorites in this season, and also ep21
Came to say this! Episodes 17 to 22 are absolute fire and have some of the best covers of the show (My Man, Go Your Own Way, Try A Little Tenderness, Turning Tables)
I agree that it wasn't heir best songs, but the other teams weren't better so that's why they won. Raise your glass from Dalton was amazing, but the duet wasn't as good as Get it Right so that's probably what tipped it. They're just lucky they didn't go against Vocal Adrenaline lol
I'm not surprised that they won. The other songs from the Warblers and Aural Intensity weren't great, except for Raise Your Glass. I also know what you mean about the auto tune. Singers like Lea, Amber, and Naya don't need it, but the producers seemed to think differently.
They always used auto-tune with Blaine, a lot of the time with Arty, sometime especially at the beginning with Brittney, sometimes with Quinn and often when they did pop songs. They didn't really need to use it with Amber, Naya or Lea and they rarely did. Only notable exception what that ariana grande song the unholy trinity did in the football field but because the original does I guess.
I think Quinn becoming more of a brat whenever she's with Finn is honestly just good writing to show they shouldn't be together 😂 Also, the fact that they wrote their own songs was what made it impressive enough to win regionals... that's kinda why they did original songs
Rachel wrote the ballad and sings the ballad. Everybody else wrote the other song and… Rachel sing that song too… what happened to the sectional’s speech about the importance of everyone? Schuester really makes me angry 😂
I’m kind of upset they didn’t do Mercedes song, I mean, come on, that would have been fun as a full performance but of course Leah had to be the star because she was probably still the fan favorite at the time or something like that. Can’t have someone else be the soloist this early in the show right 😂
The absolute best part of this episode is watching Blaine look at Kurt singing Blackbird and realizing he was in love for real with his best friend 😍. I still like Loser Like Me enough to sing with it and seat dance, so I guess it must be pretty good, but I agree that Raise Your Glass was better. I guess it comes down to HOW the songs were sung - and the New Directions wins at that. The contest is between singing GROUPS, not a solo singer and a bunch of backup singers, and since the New Directions had several singers contributing in Loser Like Me, it was the winner.
I guess the thing that threw me is there’s no way those vocals in loser like me could be “live” or even believable to be. (I know they’re not live lol)
I love the second season of Glee! It has some of my favorite songs from the entire show ❤ Blaine’s performance was actually what got me into Maroon 5’s songs for the longest time 😂
17:12 they started cheering before they heard that they won. It's like a theme in Glee, New Directions start celebrating couple of seconds before it's announced that they won. Almost like they the power of foresight or something lol
Late to comment but my favorite moment of this episode is actually the talk between Quinn and Rachel. It’s sounds mean on surface level but if you really look at what Quinn is saying it’s actually a good read on the situation. Quinn will marry Finn and they’ll end up stuck in this small town, and live miserable lives while Rachel will go off to New York and become the star she was always destined to be. “You can’t hate me for helping to send you on your way.” She’s basically saying that Rachel is talented and too good to end up stuck in Ohio because of a guy she liked in high school. She’s just saying it in her… well, her typical HBIC Quinn way. Not saying Quinn’s right or that she gets to speak for Finn, I just find it interesting. Quinn really has just resigned herself to being miserable all her life with someone I don’t think she even truly loves in that way and it’s just kind of sad. The self-loathing on this girl is insane.
These kids are literally giving 👞 a list of ways the Sue is mentally and physically abusing them and his reaction is “oh this is all great songwriting material!”.
glee annoys me in the fact they acknowledge favoritism (like rachel and blaine) but they always do other characters dirty like they had to do quinn dirty when she was just acting better just so rachel would have more drama with finn and when they acknowledge 'hey let someone other than blaine sing!'' they give him a duet that doesn't fit chris/kurts voice at least blackbird was great but whew and this is just two examples, the show does this all the time with many characters for especially rachel and blaine and the show itself will pick at this but rarely actually do anything about it
I'll always remember this episode..... Not because of the original songs, because let's be real those were really cringy, but hey it felt age appropriate, like they were written by high school students. I'll remember this episode for Klaine's(Kurt x Blaine) first kiss! Oh my god the build-up, you could hear them breathe and the bgm was so quiet, you only focused on them. I was so happy for Kurt, he finally found someone after having to let go of both Finn and Sam
There is one original song yet to be performed (no spoilers who, when or where) that is my ultimate guilty pleasure. I CANNOT wait for you to hear it. There are no words to describe it and IMO rivals Trouty Mouth.
Also, yeah the autotune on this season is out of control. I think the singers probably had very little time to do several takes to perfect the vocals so the producers went wild with the autotune.
Canaries can live up to 12 years, but birds are very delicate, and most people just don't care for them correctly. They are especially sensitive to temperature changes, chemicals, and stress, so Kurt carting the poor thing around (in a probably too small cage) likely didn't help matters. Anyways, I think the original songs were pretty good, but you're right about their voices being kind of weird this time around. Blaine and Rachel both sounded a little flat to me.
it has been so interesting watching glee again through your channel. I loved this show with a burning passion and it hit me at a very crucial age, so it will always have a place in my heart, no matter how crazy it got towards the end. Your reaction to the songs and to the characters are making me relieve the magic that it was getting to know them 10 years ago, all the laughs, all the tears that would come from getting invested in this show. i think its precious you are watching all of it now, thank you for sharing the reactions. I also didn't feel the songs in the regionals this time around. It was kind of meh compared to the emotional impact of the previous competitions.
Welcome to early 2000s pop. I’m pretty sure this is when autotune was becoming much more popular. Originally it was just a way to fix minor issues with pitch and other things but now it’s become it’s own monster to substitute for people who don’t have faith in their own singing voice, to achieve unnatural perfection. Most of these songs were probably pretty-recorded also. Your definitely right, most of these actors and actresses have great voices and don’t need it at all. Especially not Lea Michelle, her natural singing voice is a powerhouse. It drew peoples attention but I’m with you, it’s very over produced in some performances.
this is not the only time they make questionable decisions about competition songs. I also was not sold about candles. And the original songs were good but they had a song with Leah Michelle killing it then were like, actually it would be better if u sounded like a different person now. strange
I'll never forgive the writers for that awful arrangement of Candles. It was such a mess in production that Darren himself had to step in and fix it. Unfortunately, this was the best he could do with it. It's out of both of their ranges and doesn't really highlight either of them very well. They have way better duets than this. I think they nerfed them so New Directions could win lol
Kurt being fed up with “The Blaine Show” is hilarious. The song is Kurt’s current situation. He’s in misery at Dalton. Blaine looking at Kurt and the shoulder hug is Blaine being in love with Kurt without knowing he’s in love with Kurt. Blackbird is sung beautifully. Blaine realising he’s totally head over heels for Kurt is such an amazing moment. Sue - 🙄 Brittany - hilarious as always. Kurt getting the duet with Blaine is all the Warblers shipping Klaine as a collective. Santana and trouty mouth is funny but poor Sam. Quinn’s obsession with becoming prom Queen gets old real fast. The kiss………….. ❤❤❤ The intake of breath………..❤❤❤ The hand thump to the table……….❤❤❤ Hell to the no. Love it. Sue again 🙄 can’t stand her character. The judges - why do they have to make them so weird? They did well at the time but looking back, you can definitely see the difference
Thing is, sadly, had The Warblers done the song from the beginning of the episode instead of Candles with Raise Your Glass it probably would've been nearly unbelievable that New Directions would win over them, imo~~~ But yeah, it seems like the writers knew that the Blaine & Kurt duet needed to be good but not great (so they could have New Directions win), and so that song was picked. It was sweet and all, but not a competition song.
Well a lot of the reason for why The ND won over the Warblers have to do with. how Tammy Jean Albertson voted. Tammy put Aural Intensity 1 ND 2nd and The Warblers last...Rod Rimmington Voted Warblers first The ND 2nd and Aural Intensity came in last ..Sister Mary Constance voted The ND. First The Warblers 2nd and Aural Intensity last....this is the only way the votes can happen to have the ND come out ahead ...However it shines a clear light that The Warblers list because Albertson was a bigot
Candles was a poor song choice. Kurt/Chris can sing in a high range but candle just appeared like screaming. Kurt’s Blackbird and their duet Baby it’s cold outside were a perfect pitch for Kurt’s voice.

Kurt is literally the cutest little thing I ever seen, and Blaine looks like he should go back in his mom's womb because he's too dang adorable! I love them both so much! One of my Glee fanfiction stories is about Blaine, the youngest in his family, being stuck in the shadows of his older siblings, Cooper (his older brother who we see in the Season 3 episode "Big Brother"), Courtney (his older sister), Coy (his older brother), Barrett (his older sister), CJ (which stands for Clarity June, his older sister), Riley (his older sister), Ava (his older sister), Madden (his older brother), Lola (his older sister), Whitney (his older sister), Chase (his older brother), Lynn (his older sister), Jenny (his older sister), Nina (his older sister), Lori (his older sister), and Sherman (his older brother). The story is set several years before Blaine met Kurt. In the cast list for the novel, Blaine is portrayed by Darren Criss. Blaine is still the same age when he was in the Dalton Academy Warblers. He thinks his older brothers and sisters are better than him.
@@carolinekaeser I total get that it totally could be an anthem and now it is. But I don't think you can write a sing, and just clam it's an anthem the first time you sing it. Anthems are very much voices for a generation, and I don't think the write and choose their song to be one of those voices. They can write it hoping it will be, or trying to capture the generation. but they can't just be like I wrote this anthem. Like they did and it has such a connection to the generation, but that's after the fact.
Woo, finally caught up on the Glee videos! I do like the original songs (and geez, that note Rachel hits during Get It Right!) and I think that they were definitely going to win when you look at Aural Intensity and then with the Warblers, they didn't choose a good song for the duet at all. Maybe if the Warblers had done a different song that showed off Kurt's range, it'd have been different. And let me just say, the look on your face when you saw the slushy cups was fantastic!
I love the original songs that New Directions do in this episode, even if they do sound a little auto tuned, however I love “Hell to the No” more than any of the other songs in the episode.
Trouty Mouth will always be iconic 🤣

I think that Loser Like Me was an anthem. Being such a statement piece. Throwing it back at bullies/The Man/anyone who’s against the little guys etc.
I literally just kicked my boyfriend out of the room so I could watch this!!!
I'm so excited!!
😂😂 poor guy !
@@TravisViews oh, he's used to me, don't worry 🤣🤣
I love the original songs that New Directions do in this episode, even if they do sound a little auto tuned, however I love “Hell to the No” more than any of the other songs in the episode.
Trouty Mouth is absolutely Regionals material
I used to love this loser song lol. I would watch it on UA-cam over and over again 😛
すばらしい!Great
Yeah, I also wished there was less autotune in this show
