1 - your brain does what it thinks you want it to do, what it thinks is in your best interest and what you told it years and years ago and it’s up to you to change it
2 - it responds to 2 things - the pictures you make in your head, and the words you say to yourself
3 - you’ve got to make unfamiliar familiar and familiar unfamiliar

6 years ago, I had a brain injury. I had to relearn the entire language of English, which is called aphasia. This was quite hard for me, because I have always been a working writer. This is a deep part of me, something I wouldn’t life without. I was around a lot of people who also had brain injuries in my first year, and these people were completely negative in almost every way. Being around these people showed me I didn’t want to be like them. These people thought that there was no future, that they couldn’t get better. I have been working and working on relearning the entire language of English, and now I am working as a writer again. I write resumes! I have this part of my life back. It is the hardest thing I have ever done, but I believed in myself. The kind of thinking that Marisa is talking about isn’t magic. It is a reality if you want it to be your reality. I hope that this post helps.

27:00 self praise. make praise familiar. make self praise very familiar. what is the one thing you would have loved to have heard? you know what you need to hear. close your eyes, think of what you most wanted to hear now, or 30 years ago and say it to yourself. I am a good person. I am smart, I matter. I am successful. I am significant. tell your brain what you want. make great stuff familiar and negative stuff unfamiliar.

What surprises me is that these two things, about words and pictures triggering and influencing our moods, decisions, our whole life are rarely given the attention they deserve. The bad practice is recognized, but not too many people have heard it explained as Marisa does in this video. I appreciate the broad-scope explanation of something that could be told in 2 minutes. I can appreciate the significance of these ideas and how they can be a game-changer for so many people.

Very helpful. Wrote down the instructions. It is true...immediately changes your brain chemistry etc. I have PTSD from the military jobs I did in Vietnam...am treated by meds from V.A. and was hospitalized in late 1990's for it. Did not realize how negative my self talk was...and worrying about control, etc. Watch the video all the way through...do the physical demonstrations she asks the audience to do....the leaning test made me laugh positively because my body almost fell backwards....Thank you Doctor Peer.

  • @edwardhunia6315

    My take in a nutshell
    1) Your brain is conditioned by the what you say, and the images you imagine.
-next time you want to do something, use this fact to effect change.
-i.e. ever tried learning something that's really hard? track what you say, and what you imagine as you go about the task... Marisa also includes a feel element, so track that too... then use corrective dialog, imagination, and feeling to reprogram. use consistency to make familiar the new, and actively work to diminished negative response.
I've read comment that suggest there's no value in taking the time to listen to this talk, but you really should listen. It's good value

Well done Marisa. You've watered this down to its most basic (which Einstein would say is a sign of mastery and that, if you can't, you haven't grasped it and are BS'ing still) and shown people that they're fully responsible for their attitudes, for what happens next (no matter what happened or was done to them) and that people need to self-review regularly to catch themselves self-sabotaging and instead inject some hope, some enthusiasm and crack on for another day.
It's great advice and you are 100% correct that this sort of mental toolbox should be part of the school curriculum. It's the very essence of what the education system is about. Enabling people to grow.

I actually find myself tuning out what people are saying at times, so basically, i cant hear them, and i think its the same for a lot of people. I have to constantly rewind back and listen several times to one point before it sinks in. I am always reading books so i have used up a lot of mental energy on that so far. If i knew a way to focus more i would try it. I also paint and draw as my main hobby and this is something that requires a lot of attention, but i find it less strenuous than reading or listening to people. We're all our own islands.

Exactly what I needed to hear tonight. The way we communicate with ourselves really makes or breaks. I'm a sculptor and 3D artist and due to the intricacy of my line of work, I often find myself in situations where I hit a complete blank with a big project. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by it and calling it a shitshow I've noticed that convincing myself that this is intriguing and I can't wait to explore it already gives me a ton of energy and inspiration to do it confidently. Thank you Marisa!

For me this is the best Ive seen all the others talk to long about all the negative issues than get to the positive in the last 4 minutes. Thanks I am a therapist as well and have worked with various and diverse client populations hence all the issues are usually about thought distortions and when I do the movement and change the brain group they love, why ? Because it is effective. I really like this talk. It is in line with my practices and the Book I wrote, The 30-day Happiness tune-up journey. Do what she is talking about and it will work.

Wow this is by far the best video of Marisa I've seen. I've been depressed for two days. Been beating myself up and diminishing myself over a relationship that was doomed to failure anyway. I've been telling myself I was worthless and undeserving of love. This video has made my day. Thank you.

I have been so terrible to myself in reaction to how people have treated, abused me and rejected me. I neglected myself so much that I feel unworthy and incapable of dealing with the real World. I wish I COULD break out of feeling depersonalization and derealization. I'm at my Rock bottom feeling like I have nothing to offer the World.

I was having a chat with a brain surgeon at The Royal College of Physicians one night,.. he said... " I doubt we will ever truly understand how the brain works, maybe we are not meant to? ...everything is our next best guess"...human psychology is one thing,.. how the brain works... something else.

Last week I was stuck in heavy traffic due to ice & snow conditions for the best part of six hours, then my car overheated which ended up cracking the cylinder head, seizing the engine (around £1500 repair bill) which then left me stranded on the side of the road with no heating so I started to shiver & shake uncontrollably as my core temperature plummeted in minus 15 deg conditions, I tried to convince my brain that I was having the most fun id ever had in my life but it wasn't having any of it. This technique works great on paper though.

Maybe your mind could not override
The very real facts you were in that situation and you new it was going to cost a packet to repair the car and you were freezing cold and in a sad situation.
I dont think there's anyway you brain is going to believe your having a great time.
Your brain knows you are not telling the truth so it does not work.
Maybe accept the situation and get the best from the situation. What can I learn etc from this.
But we cannot fool our brain!
This stuff works but no ones brain will believe when its fed untruth.
Hope your warm and have a nice reliable car now. Take care
