  • Martin Scorsese, Mark Kermode, Brad Bird and Thelma Schoonmaker give a spoiler-free introduction to Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's 1946 masterpiece A Matter Of Life And Death, a supernatural wartime romance about a British pilot who survives jumping from his plane without a parachute before falling in love with an American radio-operator. The film stars David Niven, Kim Hunter, Richard Attenborough, Roger Livesey and Marius Goring.

It's a truly beautiful film, only beaten by Kind hearts and coronets.

Their films are masterpieces I bought A Matter of Life and Death, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Red Shoes and Black Narcissus. I am going to buy more of their films because they are all great films.

This is a fabulously heart-rending yet heart warming film. I saw it many years ago on television. It was part way through but I became entranced and watched it to the end. It was years before it was repeated. But when it was, I pounced on the opportunity to see the whole story. I was even more wrapped up in it the second time. Years later in a retro shop, I found the DVD. Of course I bought it. I try to encourage younger people to watch it. To let it nudge their subconscious towards a more positive outlook. To perhaps assist them to value life. You see heaven is in black and white while the living world is in colour. Maybe there's a reason for that?

Like Sunrise (1927) and Man with a Movie Camera (1929), it's a movie in love with movies and all of their possibilities.

Here's a question ---- In heaven we see a lot of dead soldiers and nurses from WW2 ... but none of them are Germans and Japanese ... so where in the Other World do you think They are? ... Hmmmmm.
