Have you ever considered doing safety tutorials? I don't know what the legalities are in doing that, but there are a lot of people who don't know what to do in those situations, or can't take classes. That's so terrifying, but I'm glad you were there and were able to help her. So brave, such a good daddy!

Hi Chell, I love you! When my Goddaughter was 11 months old, she was on the floor by a plant. We three adults took our eyes off her for a second. She managed to grab a piece of a leaf and inhaled it. Her daddy realized immediately that she was choking. He literally turned her upside down and stuck his hand in her mouth and pulled out the leaf fragment which was about the size of a nickel. Most scary thing I’ve ever witnessed. We were in the same room! Thank you for saving her, Cory. It is okay to fall apart once she’s safe. You did a good job. Hugs and love to all of you.

Katie S that also happened to me with my child but was able to help him right away. He would get into everything I through my plant away and made sure nothing bad ever happened again I didn't take my eyes off not for a second, it happened with my sister watching him in living room while I was cooking never again horrible thank God all these babies are ok!!

Rosie Christ Oh, I’m so glad your little one is okay as well. I remember when I was young I’d look down on parents whose babies were bruised, etc. once you have a little one, you learn quickly how much trouble these little ones can get into no matter how diligent you are. It is a miracle that any of us survive to adulthood. 😊

My father choked when he was a little boy and it terrified him so much that he refused to eat after it for a while. The only way they got him to eat was to buy him a beautiful new teddy bear. He loved that bear. That was back in the forties as he's 83 now and I have been given the very old and loved bear to look after and will give him to my kids someday. :)

When my daughter was about 6 months old, I became an EMT and had just passed my CPR for babies and children. I was feeding her and my toddler son was eating a cut-up apple for a snack. He was watching me feed his sister and decided to "help" by popping a small piece of apple into her mouth when I turned to get her bottle. She started choking and turned bright red...I had no idea what happened since I didn't see it happen! I went into EMT mode and grabbed her out of her seat, started following the choking protocol and luckily got the apple out. After she started crying I broke down and cried too! I was so shook up but also so thankful I knew what to do...EVERY PARENT should take an infant/child CPR and choking class!! So glad your little pumpkin is OK 💕

I had a cousin who used to put EVERY thing she saw in her mouth. I'm talking from a watch battery that fell on the floor and in seconds it was in her mouth, to whatever crumbs she could find. It happens and I'm not even a parent and I know this ;)

I'm glad she's okay, and I know the fear you felt. In November, as I was getting my daughter ready for school, I called her in for lunch. She ran in the front door, tripped, and her hood caught on the door handle. She couldn't get up herself, her zipper was choking her fully. I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't been right there. Her neck looked terrible for about a week, and her doctor said she's fortunate nothing started to swell.
Being a parent takes years off of your life, but the years you have are so rewarding. 💖

So glad you used your intuition. What a relief. Very good advice re First Aid.
Well, my son was 17, yes 17. He had been flicking a coin up in the air and catching it whilst llaying on his bed. So he's flipping and the coin went into his mouth and he got such a fright he swallowed it. It was a 10 cent coin. (Australia). So he ambles out to me and says, "mum I just swallowed a coin. I can sort of feel it in the back of my throat but It's stuck". So this is about 10pm and I literally throw him into the car and drive like a maniac to the hospital, not willing to wait for an ambulance in case they were delayed. We made the 20 minute trip in 10 minutes. :) So they Xrayed him and it was stuck sideways in his esophagus so air could still get in and out. Had it slipped to be flat he wouldn't have been able to breath. So they admitted him to a ward and gave him 6 hours to move it. Gave him all sorts of gunk to move it into his stomach with the hope it would come out the other end. Otherwise, they were going to have to operate. Luckily, it slipped down and passed through. Now he's nearly 30 and every now and then I offer him 10 cents with a smirk on my face. So even at that age they can be a pain.

Oh my Lord, I'm so glad that she's okay!! Good job Cory, and I appreciate you sharing this with us. I remember when my baby brother choked on an ice cube in Tokyo. My Dad got it out, went to lay down for a bit with him, woke up and found him in the clothes closet after he swallowed a mothball choking again!! My dad was a hero twice that day, and now my baby brother is 46 years old. I'm sending you love and double hugs to Chell!!😊💟🐞

Last year I took my son to lunch at red lobster. He was eating the tomatoes out of my salad when he started choking. No one offered help and I had to dislodge it myself. He ended up throwing up all over me and the floor. Other than a couple at a nearby table, not one person asked if he was ok. I think it took me a good week to stop crying everytime I thought about it. It's one of the most terrifying thing a parent can experience. I'm thankful I had CPR training while at a previous job. I agree that all parents should take a course. You never know whose life you may need to save. 👩‍👦❤

my husband and I have gone through a similar situation. My 12 month old son started choking on a bitter biscuit. I looked at my husband and just saw him freeze. So that same calm came over me as i looked in my son's mouth and saw that i could pull the obstruction out. So I did, it was rather large, then i thumped my son on the back a few times to make sure everything came out.
After my son started breathing normally that is when i hugged him tight. I looked up at my husband and the look i saw on his face made me feel like i was a super hero! I think the only other time i saw my husband look at me that way was when i nursed my son for the first time.
So thanks to that situation my husband took a Red Cross babysitters course and we both took a more advanced first aid course. I took the Red Cross babysitter course at 11 yrs old and it still helped me 10 years later to save my son. So now my husband and I both have our first aid and CPR/AED certifications that we make sure to renew every two years! Next year my son will be old enough to take this course that helped save his life!

I have training in first aid and CPR, but my daughter started chocking and I couldn't think straight. I picked her up and ran down the hall to my husband yelling. By the time I got to him all the jostelling dislodged the candy and she was breathing fine. I am not so great in an emergency when my kids are involved.

Omg I know that fear as well! Several months back my daughter, 2yrs old, choked on some food. I don't even remember what it was she choked on. But luckily I was sitting right beside her when it happened. I haven't had cpr/Heimlich training in over 10 yrs but just like you said it all came back to me in an instant. I went immediately into rescue mode and then afterward straight to mommy mode. It took 2 blows to get the food dislodged and when it shot out of her mouth I immediately started sobbing. The scariest thing that has ever happened to me so far in my life.

About 3 months ago, when my daughter was 14 months old, she found a stale fruit snack under the couch. We don’t normally let her have whole ones/ we cut them in quarters and supervise when she eats them. I was doing dishes in the same room and heard her gasping for air, came running and she was starting to turn blue. Did the Heimlich on her, but the gummy was stuck to the back of her throat and didn’t come out. I was able to force two fingers down her throat to pull it out. It was over in less than 30 seconds but absolutely terrifying. Thankfully I remembered everything I had learned in first aid/cpr training from almost 5 years ago, but I’ve gone back to get my certification renewed since that incident. Thank God Chell is okay!

I have memories of being the choking child, 3yrs old, in a Payless shoe store, with a butterscotch candy. My mom had recently seen child CPR taught on her soap opera, All My Children. She did exactly what she was supposed to do, and the candy popped out.

When my now 11yr old was a toddler she choked on a bit of hotdog. It happened so fast even though I had taken precautions. I cut it up into small bites and didn't leave her to eat alone. She walked a few feet away from me and stumbled while chewing. She looked at me with that very scary panicked look and I knew. I quickly got over to her, turned her upside-down over my knee while standing and gave her a few solid downward "pats"

You are absolutely right, Corey! Everyone should learn CPR, especially parents with little kids. I learned CPR through Medical Assistant school. Never did I realized, I needed to know it. My 2 year old daughter at the time, choked on a dime. She was gasping for air. It was down the middle of her throat, out of sight. I panicked and the memory of my training kicked in. I had to calm down and sweep the dime with my finger down her throat. It was scary....Please, for those of you, do like Corey said, if you don't know CPR, I strongly recommend you to take CPR class. It can save your child's life and your loved ones.

I feel you, Cory. How terrifying! When my oldest was 2 (she's now 4) I was sharing an orange with her. At the tine, I didn't consider perhaps needing to cut the slices in half at the time. I left her in the kitchen to answer the phone in the living room and a half a second later she came running in, turning purple and choking on a slice of orange. So frightening. I kind of knew cpr, at least enough to dislodge it. But man. That experience actually helped me when a baby at the nursery I volunteer at choked abd I was able to help it when no one there felt confident enough to. We'll done, Cory!

Praise God she’s OK. I’m a retired ER RN. I can emphasize your point about learning CPR. When I was 5 years old, my sister (2 at the time) were playing in the back yard while my mom was gardening. I turned my back & next thing we knew my sister was in the pool face down in 8ft of water. My dad had been a lifeguard as a teen & a Marine for many years. He heard us screaming & like Superman jumped in the pool. My sister was already blue. He did CPR & had her back in seconds. She spent the night in the hospital to monitor for dry drowning. Fortunately, because my dad knew CPR she had no neurological deficit. She ended up being inducted in the national honor society & spent 16 years in the Marines. CPR classes are so easy & take little out of anyone schedule. It’s an investment in someone’s life. Thank you so much for sharing😘😘😘😘

My daughter who is 5 years old now, but when she was almost 3 she choked on food when she had a seizure it scared the crap out of me! We ended up at the hospital for a few days cause she had a few more seizures due to the lack of oxygen! It was so hard and I didnt know how to deal with it afterwards cause she does have seizures so how do you prevent a child from choking when a seizure kicks in and they are eating!?! It was so horrible, she was limp, her face was turning pale and her limps turning, her eyes was wide open, her jaws was locked shut! I still have that in the back of my head every single day when I look at her and say thank god you are still here little one.

I have never taken formal training for CPR but read instructions and watched videos on how to do it and the difference in techniques for small children or infants. It came in handy one day when I was around a friends small child. She was standing near her grandfather and I happened to look down at her. She was turning blue/grey around her mouth and choking. I leaned her down over my knee and whacked her back. The candy came shooting out across the floor. Only then did her grandfather see what was going on. Its so scary that something like that can happen and no one notice. She was so quiet...

I have never experienced someone choking until a few months ago. my best friend and her almost 2 year old daughter always comes to my work for lunch with me and we were having lunch and she was eating fruit and we somehow missed a piece of fruit that wasn't cut up small enough and she put it all in her mouth and she started to cough and we noticed, but then immediately she stopped coughing and started turning red and her mouth was wide open! we both jumped up and grabbed her out of the highchair and started to hit her to get it out... it was a pretty large piece! It came up but I still had to pull it out with my fingers! I work in a hospital and before working in a hospital, I did childcare for a few years so I have been certified for a very long time. Of course after we got it out, she started to cry and I literally had a melt down in the middle of my work's lunch room... literally bawling my eyes out. something that only lasted 30 seconds felt like a life time. I think everyone should be trained, really. You never know when something like that will happen!

Yes your child choking is the scariest thing in the world! I learned to give the Heimlich maneuver as soon as they came out with it. One of my cousins died from choking on a hot dog when he was only 3. That's always been a very scary thing in our family. Always cut up hotdogs in tiny pieces they swell as they get chewed. Grapes too..This happened before they had ever discovered the Heimlich maneuver. I'm so glad you found Chell and that she is okay. It will take time for things to get back to normal. my husband used to keep his change inside a little coin pocket. That way they would never be a chance a coin with drop. Mine was kept in my wallet Thank God for you, Cory!

My cousin’s youngest swallowed a coin and she realized something was wrong when a little blood came up on a cough and she looked down his throat and had to reach in and get it out. He also put beans (or maybe it was peas) in his ears.

A month ago, my mother was watching my four year old daughter. I walked in the house to give give her a hug and say hello and same expression you described Chell having: changing of her skin colour, sitting there just shaking!
I’m an educator, worked at a daycare putting myself through school and help intellectually disabled adults so I am certified and keep that training up to date.
Anyway, after seeing my daughter in distress, the second thing I noticed was a small bag of potato chips beside her, recognized what was going on and experienced the same thing you did, no emotion, adrenaline and training took over; I propped her on my lap, smacked her back a couple times and dislodged this huge completely whole chip. It’s incredible how calm I was, did what I had to do and than yup, afterwards I was a complete & absolute emotional wreck!!!
It’s amazing what can become a choking hazard in the right setting. After it came flying out, same thing, she took in this huge gasp of air - by far one of the scariest sounds to experience, coupled with relief to hear her start to breathe!! No clue how a chip can get caught like that, but I’m just grateful I had so much training over the years!!!!
I recommend everyone get there First Aid training, regardless of profession or if you’re a parent because you never know when someone may need it💜

Corey, a lot of parents have total empathy with you. It scares you to death when your child chokes or has a serious injury. What a blessing that you have choking training! You might want to pick up an Emergency handbook for home and have really good Emergency kit or Medic kit. It will come in handy!! Kids have accidents, you can't stop it, but you can be prepared as you well know. As they say "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Hug Miss Chell for me she is very precious! Retired Nurse, and I could tell you stories for hours about kids and accidents from the Emergency Room!

I remember a time my toddler niece was choking when we were in the car. It was a van, so there was a slight bit of space between us. Her mom and dad were in the front but I was in the back next to her and also not completely with it that day. She had been given... Either gummy worms or gummy bears, I think it was gummy worms, and her mom starts freaking and yelling when she realized she was choking on the gummy but every time she would go to help, she'd cough it up. So it was a lot of panic, ease, panic, ease, and since I was very not used to young children at the time and had just learned to basically be out of the way if the parents were around because they knew what to do most times, I didn't react immediately and then when I was yelled at to help, I go to reach for her to help and the seatbelt decided to be locked and pin me to the chair for some reason even though we were in a parking lot. I ended up having to unbuckle myself as I'm being yelled at which is very disorienting to someone not completely with it and when I got over to her side finally she was okay. She kept coughing it up then eating it again only to choke on it again then eat it again. Finally though she seemed to chew it up enough that she could eat it without choking.

So glad chell is ok. It's the scariest thing to watch your child choking. Our grocery store gives kids free apples and bananas. (My son is 2 and chokes alot when he eats) my son wanted an apple so we were strolling around getting groceries and he started chocking on the skin and I was yelling for help. The worker closest to me had ear buds in so he didn't hear my. I was panicking and started to hit his back. He finally spit it up. It was such a relief to see color back in his face. I was crying. We have had his throat checked out and nothing came back out of the norm. Hoping he grows out of it. I definitely need to take a CPR course. Love watching your family

What a scary situation. I am glad to know Chell is OK, great job Cory! I only vaguely remember it, but when I was very young I swallowed a coin (a big one if I remember right) and it got stuck in my throat my dad saved my life as he has medical training and was able to get it out. I don't remember much as I was so young at the time, but I do agree with you Cory learning how to stop a child chocking is important to know if you have or going to have kids.

And my son got out mouse trap (the game) from the closet and my 3 1/2 year old got ahold of the marble and swallowed it and she was choking. I threw all the marbles away. Thank God my husband was there! I am so glad she's ok!

Ok first off, Kristen that is the prettiest dress EVER! And second, I completely understand. I have saved my nephew twice. I know what you mean about letting the training take over. The first time he was about 4 months old and his bottle broke and I guess you could say he was drowning. 4 other people in the room panicking and all I could think was stop it. I had him in my arms before most of them understood what was going on. The second time he was almost 4 and was playing at the park. He picked up a rock and had it in his mouth before anyone knew he had moved. Once again I reacted without thought. I'm just so glad I was there, his mother never took the time to learn CPR and first aid. IT IS WORTH THE TIME AND MONEY!!!!!!!!! After all, can you actually put a price on your loved ones life?

Well done Cory. My Dad saved me when I was little. He told me that I walked over to the dining room table where he was sitting and he saw that I was choking. He turned me upside down and hit my back(60's) and a jingle bell from my plush toy went flying out. I remember seeing the bell rolling across the floor. I wasn't scared, he was, just like you!

Glad Chell is okay. When my daughter was 3 she choked on a lollipop that got detached from the stick and lodged in her throat. I did not know what to do. In desperation, I turned her upside down and slapped her back. Thank goodness the candy dislodged and came flying out of her mouth. It was very upsetting but turned out okay. I learned CPR and the Heimlich maneuver after that. I don't think you ever forget an experience like that.

Hi Corey and family! Oh yes I know how it feels to save someone from choking. When we were kids my cousins and I were playing, Connie started to choke! No one knew what to do! I went behind her and pounded on her back, a piece of hard candy shot out of her mouth! She still thanks me.

I don’t have kids, but a few years ago my Yorkshire Terrier named Roxie choked on something. We still don’t know what it was, but she started choking and foaming at the mouth and it was terrifying. Luckily, my brother knew how to do toddler cpr and saved her. But, still to this day, I’m a little bit of a helicopter mom when she eats anything or does anything weird.

I warn my dogs that there is a 'No Chocking' policy. Of course, they don't understand my policies. I worry sometimes, because their dearly-departed father had a habit of huffing a lot after drinking and I don't want them to develop that too.

To convert °F to °C you first subtract 32 and then divide by 1.8
    -> (75°F - 32) ÷ 1.8 = 23.8°C

So glad she is ok. When my youngest was around a year old I went to go to the bathroom. Wasn’t gone for more than 30 seconds and I come out to his face turning blue. After calling my husband to help me step by step (he was in the army for 7 years) and a minute of baby cpr two pieces of LEGO (from his older brothers room) came flying out. It was the scariest moment of my life and I wish at that time I had my training. I got lucky that I had time to call for help.
So glad Chell is ok ❤️

An example choking can happen at any age is, my youngest at the age of 8 days old, managed to choke on his feed. So much so, he stopped breathing and started to turn blue! I managed to turn him over, so he was facing the floor, slapped his back, and his airway cleared, by bringing up the milk. To be on the safe side, I spent the night with him, in the hospital. He is now a very happy little 6 yr old, but that evening was one I had never wanted to experience, but having had to, I will never forget! So glad you managed to get to Chell and knew what to do in time!

I’m glad she is okay. As a mom I experienced this with one child choking on a piece of meat. I pulled him out of his high chair so fast that I bruised his legs because I didn’t take the tray off! But he’s a happy 32 year old. Then I had to do the heimlich on my niece who also choked, this time on stringy bacon. I always gave my kids crisp bacon because I know how softer bacon can do this. The worst part about that one was her mother trying to rip her from my arms while I was doing it. And her dad screaming at me to help her. I finally yelled pat get her away from me. Because I was busy fighting her off while doing the heimlich. She was scared. She had no training and I’m an RN. We were in the middle of nowhere, and I thought I’d be doing it in the backseat of a car on the way to the hospital. Once she went limp I was able to pop it out. But I always tell people, if it fits completely in a child’s mouth make sure it’s out of reach. No change on the floor or table etc. Little legos were supervised in my house even when the kids were over 3 until I knew I could trust them to reason. No small hard candy. And gummies can be scary too. Popcorn and hotdogs are bad. Every parent should know cpr and the Heimlich maneuver and if Kristen doesn’t then she should take a class. One of my twins came home on an APNEA monitor so anyone who babysat had to have cpr training.
