But it only likes english. When trying to feed it with other languages i speak, it freaks out. They just weren't so massive in scale and mainstream until about 2 years ago. Hell, even before transformers (invented in 2017), we had LSTM models that could write fairly coherent sentences - which is what Google Translate used for a while.
