I had one go broody her first year but didn’t finish the job. But this year she went broody and hatched out a clutch! I picked up a few chicks from AZ Chickens and she accepted those as well and she’s being a great momma!
🥰This has come in handy for me a few times now having chickies raised by a hen. I doubt my current egg layers will ever go broody though, since they are Freedom Rangers. They don't even sing the egg song. I really wish I was closer to you. I tried Bress twice; once with hatching eggs and once with 2 juvenile roos sent in the mail and they were the worst; small, loud, flighty - not even slightly meaty. Terrible gene pools. Oh well. I'll be trying my luck crossing the FRs with those Delawares I mentioned. Good luck with the broody!
I’m so happy to hear that pullets from broodies have a higher tendency to be broody! I had an awesome broody mama this spring and I’m hoping the pullets that she raised will follow suit.
Our Hatcheries are doing their best to breed the broodiness trait out of the American Bresse so they can control the source. It would be nice if everyone could have a Broodiness pen to try to preserve the broodiness of the Bresse. They do have the propensity to go broody, so it is not like they are void of it and/or have had it bred out to an unmanageable extent. I have a small flock of Icelandic chicken I got just to have some setters just in case SHTF.. Prepper mentality. But is sure would be nice to have a few momma Bresse that could take care of setting and raising a brood on a regular basis. She would deff be a keeper in my book... and whoever her daddy was to breed back to. Like they say, broodiness is a hard thing to breed for, but if one was to breed back to specimens that came out of a broody flock, including those that make the cut as breeding roosters out of broody hens, odds are a good broody line could be established.
One of my hens I hatched from your eggs went Broody on me. I marked 2 eggs to leave in her nest, after about 15 days one got broke but she hatched the other one. I had just hatched 5 in my incubator(from another one on two) that same day so I got the chick she hatched and put with them. After that she went back to eating and staying out with the other hens she is with.
My biggest Bresse hen went broody this year and is currently raising about 20 olive egger chicks (she hatched 12 herself). She looks like a mini white turkey all fluffed up and angry, strutting and charging. I also had a different Bresse girl go broody and hatch a couple chicks last year as well, plus a few other part-timers that weren’t serious. I’m in Europe though, so maybe breeders here haven’t been selecting against this trait.
I had one go broody last week, another one a few days ago and tonight there are THREE in the box🤦♀️. I'm collecting the eggs they tuck under themselves twice a day because we don't want chicks right now.
Lol, I've not had one of these girls turn broody yet but I've had an Ayam Cemani do it, and I was told that they absolutely will not. Will they will... But they make horrible mothers. They're great at hatching them out don't get me wrong. Very dedicated sitters. The problem is that at that point in time they can go die and whatever they couldn't care less. So anyway.... I wanted to tell you I had not forgotten about your generous offer to check out my boy for me call mom however we have had severe storms almost every day of this week so I'm kind of waiting for the weather to calm down and make an area where I can show you what I want to show you. And then I will get my assistant to help me record it. I have two extra roosters that are free range right now but one is very narrow and the other one is very plump but his legs are nowhere near as dark as my main boy
The rules in my Homestead are as follows LOL... You get to keep it safe, you get to teach it to eat and drink, this baby is your responsibility! I hatch all year long, and so I have whatever birds I need for my breeding program covered. However, if they want to go broody and raise some babies that's fine with me I just marked their eggs and after we get up to 12 or so, they aren't getting anymore. If they want to hatch babies and be mamas that's fine but they're on their own lol.

One of my pullets was successfully broody and not even a few weeks after kicking her babies out she’s tying to go broody again 😅
