great to see an initial review from a working professional.
Jamesons is here. Such a small community.
Due to cost, I'll never own, but hoping the RP2 might be a mini R3
never thought i'd see you here
Don't have a clue about professional cameras but this was really interesting. Hope you enjoy shooting with them. Heres to many more great shots of F1 🍻
Glad it was of interest to you
Makes my 40D look obsolete which it is, Lifelong Canon fan started with AE1 back in 70s showing my age now! All the best for new season thank you for all the work you do.
I had two AE-1’s, and still feel like they’re some of the best Canon ever produced. Showing my age as well…lol. Certainly don’t miss the days of carrying and loading 10 rolls of film and then waiting forever to see if any shots were worth keeping. Really spoiled with knowing what a shot looks like before I take it but do miss my AE-1’s from time to time. 👌✌️
AE-1 was my first too. Yep, we're getting older ;-)
My first was a Rebel 2000. My second was an R6 (well, for Canon anyway)
It's one thing being a good photographer it's another making it interesting, thanks for the videos and many great pics this season :)
I've been using the R5 for nearly a year and it's just incredible - so the R3 looks even better with the eye focus!
It's great so far
I love the 30 frames per second. But the 195 raw frame per second comes in handy when I'm shooting baseball.
I work with Canon R5 and they really are remarkable cameras, they test your own abilities, and reward you if you're on it. I've handled an R3 and it completely reminded me of my old, beloved Nikon D3, lovely handling. I hope you'll come back with mid-season, and end of season user reviews of your year with the R3. Have fun!
Your style of video is just great and enjoyable to watch
I started photography with a Zenith E and I now have the EOS R3 ............ what a difference half a century makes 🤪
Kym: This video is pure passion. Pleeeeease stay passionate. Huuuge hugs from Colombia
Good video but on DSLRs with a touch screen you don't need a separate device for bulb, just turn touch shutter on and tap screen it will go into bulb mode
Not even into photography but I love seeing the equipment it takes to do your work! Unbelievable how much money can be spent to get the best photos.
It's an expensive profession
Got my R3's a couple of months ago even though we got ripped off in the UK I love them so much so you made me hit subscribe .... cheers Hieth
There's certainly a lot of new features for me to learn
@@KymIllmanThere certainly and I am looking forward to learning along the way with the master .... 🙌
I am a Sony Shooter but I watched the entire video because I love how passionate (haha) you are about your gear. Of course like every other photographer is. But I really enjoy your videos. Can't wait for the new season.
Thanks for watching the whole lot
I'm digging all of the EOS R5/3 and RF lenses for sure. We switched to the Canon ethos several years ago and no regrets.
When you mentioned your were hoping these cameras came in before you leave, I felt nervous for you. I know you would have been fine but I know what it is like to itch for new gear right before a project begins! Congrats! Happy Travels!
My Dad was President for Fremantle Camera Club for many years.. Even back then he said Canon was the way to go..
Hi kym greetings from Thailand very interesting another top video 😊😊
They used to come with 2 manuals. 1 Quick guide and 1 thick book.
Always fun opening up a box full of new toys/tools. You will likely adjust quickly to shooting mirrorless. There will be a bit of a learning curve with shooting in electronic shutter vs mechanical. Banding from LED light sources can be an issue with the electronic shutter, but the R3 does have a faster sensor readout speed. Also, you many need to experiment with when to use anti-flickr setting and when not to use it. If you need an even lighter back-up in your kit, the Canon R6 has same/similar sensor to 1DXIII, shoots 12 mech/20 electronic fps, can upload wirelessly through wifi/bluetooth, and has a nice file size. However, it has potentially less weather sealing than R3. Looking forward to seeing shots from the upcoming season!
Just got myself the canon r6 absolutely love it for the sports photography, hopefully after some hard work the r3 with be in my collection. Also I highly recommend you try out the 100-50 RF lens, just had it for the weekend and it was phenomenal!!!!
a tilt screen is better then a flipout screen for shooting low. much better. flipout is much better for shooting yourself in video.
Another video. Thanks Kim
Agreed
you're most welcome.
Can't wait for the Shots from the R3!!!!
Delighted for you and your like a kid on Christmas ☃️ Day
I've been using my R3 covering sports for a couple of months now. I had to turn off the eye control AF as it was just to erratic. To get it to focus you need to select the subject with the eye and then press and hold the AF back button, it WILL NOT focus with the eye control alone, this is used purely for selecting what to focus on. If you want to change AF position just release the AF back button, refocus with your eye and then press the AF back button again. Hope this helps!
I can’t get it to go where my eye is focused.
Hey Kym, Please make a video on how you take care of your cameras and lenses on the go. I am sure those are used quite intensively and we need to know some tricks for long-lasting camera equipment.
To be frank about it, I do nothing more than occasionally use a blower on the sensors. .
@@KymIllman The Reason behind my question was I live in Mumbai, India and I face the issue of lens fungal every year even after keeping it dry and covered so needed your advice on that as you travel all the spectrum of climate.
Happy to hear the burden of carrying all of those units will be more manageable! Don't forget so many of us photo enthusiasts live vicariously through you, good Sir! The bar has been raised for even better content going forward, of course. Good luck lol
Let’s hope I can take these beasts.
Tame
Been shooting Canon for many years but I also have Sony. Love my R6 and when I grow up I will get the R3. Thanks for the post. Wishing you a great photography season with the new gear.
Wishes accepted. Thanks
3:40 rf caps will not go on ef, but at least aftermarket ef go just fine on rf... they also don't need to be indexed as precisely to go on.
Noted
Amazing content Kym!
Glad you think so!
I've had the R3 for a good month or so now, coming from a 1DX mark II and 5D Mark IV, it's so worth (the UK crazy price mark) I does take some time getting use to the Auto Focus system, I love using the Eye Tracking, it's a real game changer, just needs setting up right. but you'll love it, definitely RF system is the future here! can't wait to put mine through its paces this year!
I work at a camera store in the netherlands, would love to have a customer like you with the big purchaces 😂😂
I’m sure my vendors are banking plenty of profit from spend. Perhaps I’ll get the new Canon 1200mm
Thank you Kym...love your videos and looking forward to the upcoming season!
Bring it on
I'm sold!
My 9yr old daughter want to be a photographer (she has a canon m50 mk2). This is the best channel for us cause we watch F1 as a family (and you happen to.... never mind)
She has watched more videos on your channel than me.
Hats off to her! Thanks
Nice cameras, even if i’m a Nikon shooter 😀. Looking forward to se your photos this raceseason. Keep it up👍🏻
A thing to add is that the prices in Germany (and I think UK as well) are always including VAT, so we don't get ripped off :)
Like most places. I can’t stand the ++ of some countries.
The Canon R3 is absolutely insane I mean you can literally create a short vid with the 30 fps
I would love a photography class from you Kym
Great video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it
Very interesting to see what a professional looks for in a new camera.
7:29 Just a little correction, that was 30fps electronic. In electronic you can choose if you want it to be copletely silent or if you want that electronic shutter sound. The R3 is weather sealed to the same level as the 1d and 1dx series with the hotshoe cover so it won't be a problem taking it out in heavy rain. Otherwise great, intresting and fun video. Hope you're satisfied with your new cameras. Al the best from sweden!
I had a little chuckle when you pulled out the lens bag. I’ve been shooting (semi) professionally, I’m an artist, since The mid 70’s. I have never used a lens bag either.
Just added weight.
@@KymIllman And there’s a better way to protect them
@@KymIllman I should see if I can find a couple. They would make nice gift bags.
Looks like a real good bit of kit!
Loving the content!!
Wow Kym doing camera unboxing and review now. 😄
Now I'm just waiting if he'll get a shirt with "I SHOOT RAW" on it. 🤣
He doesn't have the hair for it.
One caveat with the interval timer (assuming it works the same as the R6) : once you start it, the only way it stops is it takes all the shots, or the camera turns off (switch or battery).
Noted. There’s plenty to learn with this piece of kit.
I'd like to upgrade to an R6 soon in the future, I'm no pro but I certainly have noticed the mirrorless advatages, specially in focus speed and memory buffers
I can't wait to see Kym getting R1 next year! I have tried R3 and the EVF eye tracking is so phenomenal !
I can’t make it work
You need to set it up before it will work
@@nismo09nz Yep, I calibrated it multiple times and the staff at my local Canon Imagine Square told me that it just doesn't work for me. Anyway, it's still a cool feature, I hope they can update the firmware to fix it
It looks good. I sold my 5d Mk4 recently and bought into the Sony system.
Nice
Search on B&H for "OP/Tech rain covers", they have these rain covers that can over your ill your new ThinkTank ones arrive. I've shot in heavy rain here is Syd with the 400m sized one and kept everything dry.
3-6mths for the eye piece. How are they that slow to react?
Nice video and new camera day is lovely. I’m itching for the R7 to be shipped. Any interest in that as a backup/ even more weight saving camera?
Love all the new Canons …heck, all of the OEM’s have really produced their best flagships recently, but I’ve always been a Canon fanboy. Recently picked up my first Canon 70-200 f/2.8, and I absolutely love it…really lives up to the hype and worth the money. Would love to add the 15 or 16-35. Between the glass and the new body, you’ve got a great combo! I’d be happy to take any of the “old” ones off your hands…lol. 👍🏻
I normally always have a 70 to 200 mil lens on one of my cameras
I love the 1DX Mk III but think my next one is going to be the R3 . ( You take 8000 shots in a weekend at 30 frames per second... Four minutes work...nice work if ya can get it.... ) Thanks for the review.
Great pic at 6:32!! LOL... I've been looking at the R3 but holding out for the rumored R1... Cheers!!
I will be keen to see that model too
hey Kim, I am a big fan of you and I have started watching your channel since your channel starting day
Good to hear. More videos on the way plus some exclusive UA-cam members Meet N Greet functions at a number of races this year.
Really enjoy your videos, nice bit of kit.
To not hold the button down in bulb mode, just go in live view and use the touch to take picture feature on the screen.
Works great on my 5d iv :)
I’m not sure how I do what you’ve suggested here.
@@KymIllman in live view you have an option to use the touch screen as the shutter (I think it has a toggle on the bottom left, at least it has it on the 5d IV) so in bulb mode I just focus, lightly tap the screen (mostly with a 2 second timer to get rid of shake) and it starts shooting bulb.
I just lightly tap the screen when I need it to stop.
@@KymIllman the use touch to take photo button on the bottom left looks like a camera with hand touching the screen. Just try using it with bulb mode on :)
Great video Kym, thank you.
You’re welcome.
I have the r6 And she's amazing, You must enable this option in the Auto Focus category * initial servo of points *
Can’t find anything like that in the menus.
I need that, the eos r3 for racing photography,
Can't wait to test it out
At 08:40 you say that the 1DX3 doesn't have WiFi. According to Canon it does have WiFi and Bluetooth (2.4ghz), the WTF adds 5ghz
I love unboxing!!!!!
Can’t wait for this season from Kym with new kits.
ps. I hate those new RF cap, you need to align it perfectly to put it back on, prefer the EF design that you can screw it back with eyes close.
You do.
I used a silver sharpie and drew a line into that marker. I can now see it at night as well.
@@tekguyphoto thx for the tip man, that’s brilliant, I’ll definitely give it a try. Every time I would need to have one hand holding my phone as a light source, too many close call situations already.
Great video mate! Please get back to us to see how did you find the camera on the track! You are awesome!
Will do
grate unboxing
I just got my first ‘expensive’ camera, a Canon RP. I mainly shoot 1080p video for UA-cam and it had the features I needed; the eye detection AF, RF mount, and a flip out screen. I’m thinking about also doing some photography with it. Hopefully one day I can afford a camera as nice as yours, I love buying gear haha
Love your gaffer tape hint - will be looking into that for my camera - will be giving the new one a spin this Melbourne GP 😊
You have to get the good cloth style gaffa tape
@@KymIllman cheers - only use Nashua gaffa tape 😊
I wish they made a single charger for the 1dx mark 3 batteries
The image stabilization on these lenses are killer. Just got the consumer 600 RF for the BAH GP to try on with the R5 in the stands. Hope to bump in to you Kym.
I will look for you
Lol its probably cheaper for me to fly from the UK to AUS to buy that camera then buy it here
UK has always gotten "Reamed".......which is why I buy pretty much all my gear on the "Grey market".... Never had any problems. 🤷♂
Hey Kym. Lucky guy. Any chance you can give us a look at what you do ( or your people back home) to edit your pics?
I’ve done a video on that. Check back through my back catalogue
When quoting American (U.S.) prices, people always forget local (state) sales tax (unless you live in Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire or Oregon)... I used to pay anywhere from 8.25% to 8.75% on top of the price on Newegg, B&H etc. So, if I still lived in California, I'd pay $6,523. In UAE, $6,807 from Canon direct (with 5% VAT included).
That’s something we Australians just can’t fathom.
@@KymIllman Well, UK 🇬🇧 and EU 🇪🇺 prices you mentioned have their respective VAT included, just like in Oz 🇦🇺.
Doing quite well there... expensive gear!
Can t wait to see the season ''with you''
Can't wait to share the season with you
I was kinda hoping you might snag some banging shots on the test body and lens you had on loan, glad you have the best of the best though I have to say.
Been mucking about with my recently arrived R3s And there is some work to be done
You’re making me want to get rid of all my Nikon equipment now!!!
Cool!
Going to mirrorless is like going from a gas to an electric car. It’s easier, lighter, more nimble and if you like it you love it. If you don’t like it you hate it. Once you start you don’t look back. I’ve been using mirrorless for over a year now and had to have it repaired so had to use my old DSLR for a while and what a jump backwards it was. The AF system and the feel is completely different and kinda debilitating
Great video, a lot of solid content was provided. If possible, are you willing to share some RAW photos taken from the newest EOS R3? I am struggling on whether I should be moving on and buying a EOS R3, or stay up on buying a 1Dx mark iii, it will be great if you can share some RAW pictures from those two different cameras, or filming a comparison video between the 1Dx Mark iii and the R3!
Members of my UA-cam channel get raw images of each race plus JPG wallpapers. Hit the JOIN button and reap the rewards.
When I used to be a race marshal the F1 photographers used to walk by and I noticed the majority use Canon over Nikon. Any particular reason?
I guess at the moment it’s probably 40% Canon 40% Nikon 20% the rest
Camera equipment has become expensive since I was using the F1 system in the mid-70s. I guess that was expensive then too.
I’m not sure it’s ever been cheap
No rain in Bahrain
Still waiting for my apprenticeship Kym...
You will love the evf and the auto focus ( With vehicle tracking) ... You will never touch DSLR again,😊
u got the R3 already? 😳 im still using my old n trusty canon 60D 😂 great content as usual Mr Kym!
I'm always amazed how people can walk around with an absolute brick in the R3 .
I very deliberately choose for M50 MII with the adapter for my Sigma lenses because my small hands allow it🤣
Why not switch all lenses to RF? They are unreal - lighter, and much sharper than the EF. I switched all my lenses over last yr and can't be happier!
Very interesting.
Will you be using the automatic car tracking focus? I'm with you on labelling everything. Used to shoot Indy Car racing, red carpets, World Cup, concerts etc. Lens hoods were always falling off and sometimes when you put your camera down in a crowded media area like at Fashion Week it can be confusing which 1D is yours amongst all the other photographer's cameras : ) Enjoy the new camera. Let uis know how it compares to your 1DX later in the season.
see you've used the standard EF to R adapter rather than the control ring version to control things like ISO
Great video Kym! I always love videos like this that you make! A quick question, do you have any videos about the EOS M50? I have one but I want to learn more about it
Never heard of that camera Jeske.
Ah okay, not a problem at all. Thank you anyways for replying tho!
6,238 US in Canada
Have you tried the Olympus O-MD 1´s? If, What did you think? Gaffa tape the rubber top piece
Never tried an Olympus
£4900 in the UK for a gray import.
Are you sure it's the same battery model, because usually it will be the same shape of battery, but it will have more watts stored in the battery as technology gets better
Exactly the same.
@@KymIllman Interesting! It is almost as if they thought there would be too many upgrades to the camera and left out a couple key advancements and tools to make the camera even better
Finally a Pro one can trust...
High praise indeed
Manufacturers don't call the UK Treasure Island for nothing, sadly.
Awesome Kim! Curious - have you tried the Eye Control AF?
Yes, does not work for me. But I haven’t spent enough time with it to be fair
