- We can't all be great all the time. For most of us the best we can hope for is to not be terrible most of the time and good enough when it matters. Also, never interrupt the enemy when they're making a mistake. That helps.

Jingles was a senior NCO in the RN and Erik was a loader aboard a tank in the Dutch Army.
So, Jingles drank his way around the world and Erik worked for a living?
Yes. That is accurate
Wait, you're assuming a tanker works?
At what, making tea and biscuits (or whatever the Dutch prefer)?
@@ELCADAROSA He was a loader, not a driver or radio operator, so yes, he worked, those shells are heavy.
Don't forget that in addition to drinking his way around the world. He spent an unduly large amount of time giggling at the city of Brest.
Errrrmmmmmmm he was a Cpl lots of love. PONGO’s
I too am in my 50s and spent part of my Life in.... Well, here's a laugh for Jingles and other Vets.
My Dad, who is quickly approaching 80, is a Vietnam combat vet- my Grandfather was a US Marine PRIOR to WWII when he left to become a Sailor. I'm from a Military Family. My Dad, however, was NOT what One would call enthusiastic to the thought of his oldest child Enlisting.
Soooo, I told him I had enlisted in the Military.... He and I went out to their patio and sat down over an adult beverage.
"Ok Christopher.... After ALL that both myself and your Grandfather have said has been ignored by You. So.... Marines? Army...?"
"No Sir.... I'm going to be a Jet Mechanic in the USAF!"
"AIR FORCE?!? WHEW! You had me worried there, Kid! I thought you said you were going into the Military..."😂🤣
As a 58 year old military brat who’s dad is a retired United Stated Chair Force Chief Master Sergeant jet mechanic, I approve of this post 👍🏻 😝
@@nmccw3245 I thought a slightly silly Military story was just what folks needed.
BTW, my USAF AFSC (My "Job") doesn't exist anymore because the plane Model (s) I was certified on don't exist anymore. Yep.... Going back a *bit*
Funny! My dad was in the Air Force during Korea.
@@colinsdad1 I always wondered what happens when the machine your an expert in is withdrawn from service, do they offer the chance/tell you to train up on something new if you have a long career ahead of you?

You've never been insulted until you've had a SNCO from His Majesty's Armed Forces shouting at you.
Or a US Army Sgt Major with (not kidding)23 years in...
He started off as a Huey door gunner for 4 tours then went in the reserves with a mech infantry unit.
What a SNCO
Or laughed as quietly as you can while a joe gets absolutely destroyed by multiple drills who are going at him like a pack of rabid dogs.
I think it counts for non commissioned officers and drill sergeants in most armies. Got very fond memories of being shouted at when I was a recruit in the RNL Army in the 1980ies, trying to hold my laughter. The insults were so bloody hilarious, I wish I would have taken the time and effort to make a compilation of them. I've forgotten most.

"Insulted by Professionals" 😂
For hardcore fellas, its an average game, but for average players like PapaErik, its the game of a lifetime, especially if its featured by a fellow military veteran like Jingles. PapaErik, GG and thanks for your service.
Yeah whenever you hit 100k as a Average Joe its a grate feeling.
@@jaywerner8415 I think if 100k is your benchmark for a great game you're not an average joe, you get to look up at the joes from the stats ladder
@@ainumahtar What?
@@ainumahtar I know. My average was 50k and I never got above tier 8, subs are what made me finally quit but, the carrier rework is what made it less fun. Felt too much like cheating!
@@TheBitter73 A lot of tier9+ ships have 80-100k dmg as their average per game overall, so if your 100k games are your 'great' games, you're actually worse than 'the average joe'. I'm not sure how much more clear I can spell that out, so if you still don't understand I don't know what to tell you.
I remember Flambass being asked how to improve by a viewer and his response was to learn to position; be in the right place at the time. He said something to the effect of being able to shoot is useful, but paying attention to the mini map and where ships are and then putting your ship in the right place to be where you're needed will win more games than being the best shot in the game, because it's no good being the best shot in the game if you yolo in and get blapped inside of 2 minutes.
This game is an Average Joes' demonstration of that; not the best shot, but was trying to be in good positions, firing at the right ship (including DDs) and later, not charging out after the Iwami. Sure it's not Unicum game, but a game to be pleased with. Well worth showing.
And yes, that Smaland was absolutely the MVP.
I'm sorry but there is no way you can say his positioning was good. And neither should he be expected to, he is a bad player (not even average). I don't mean to have a go at him because we fully acknowledge this. But he isn't utilising is health pool to the benefit of his team by just sitting back with a spotter plane.
Another comment sums it perfectly, copy and paste "The Iowa makes a good corridor gun platform but he played it way too safe and didn’t inch up with the team. Battleships exert pressure on the enemy team by existing and as your team moves up so should you to keep the enemy from doubling back on your over extended teammates. That’s what happened when the team went for B and he wasn’t there to keep them from thinking otherwise. You don’t have to go melee mode just scootch up a little and keep em scared of the big guns. Getting used to the weird guns on the Iowa isn’t easy and I don’t think he even had mods on the turrets as those things were glacial to turn. So yeah he played alright if he was used to the guns, positioning, and practice with the Iowa is where he needs work. Everyone is scared of everything in a wows match, you’d be surprised how much more often you’ll win if you get a little more aggressive. Trade some paint for territory then make them earn every inch they try to take back. You have ~4 heals a game try to use them all."
His positioning was actually quite poor for most of the game. He hung far too back behind an island and gave up too much map control. At the 9:30 mark he was clumped up with two other BBs at A, and ended up sailing further towards the 1 line. That was pretty much the worst place he could have been, and it was at that point someone started raging at him in chat. Where he really needed to be from the very start of the battle was up north between B and C where the team was weaker. There he would have been able to create a cross fire against all the enemy ships pushing south.
The truth is that he mostly got lucky. His poor positioning contributed to the enemy team getting a massive lead and in a majority of cases this would have just turned into another loss where he was "that" battleship, full health and last alive on the team with 50k damage. There was absolutely no reason all those low health ships needed to push in and give flat broadside at close range. This wasn't the case of his positioning forcing the enemy into a bad place, rather it was the enemy willingly putting themselves into a bad position for no reason.
*edit
Also as a general point, he spent too much time bow in not utilizing his rear turrets. I acknowledge its easy to fall into the trap of giving too much broadside in order to use all your guns, but the Iowa has decent firing angles and staying mobile with good positioning makes it a lot easier to get all guns on target.
@@yashma4187 The position will depend on what both teams do also, example, all your team races to cap circle a while you (in an Iowa) and a lone Akizuki go towards c. I ran into the whole enemy team and before I could blink, Torps galore!! We won because the rest of my team knew where the whole enemy team was minus 1 DD that was AFK in the start position. They knew what to do and I didn't because no one ever told me so, thank you for some wisdom!
please define "good positioning". this GAME is all about luck.
1) It’s better to be lucky than good.
2) Sometimes you make your own luck.
3) Never get in the way of an opponent destroying themselves.
WoWS in a nutshell.
Ya forgot one.
Use DD's as traps! They never see it commin!
Since the majority of us all are/were average players I see nothing wrong with featuring an average game.
Not everything has to be 300k and 8 kills.
Nothing wrong with average games yet don't make a mental mistake of making that THE standard. Excellence should still be the standard. That includes firing, being in position, having courage, trusting the game, and playing for fun.
sometimes the average jow vids can be more fun to watch then the pros imo. beacuse the "pros" know what to and not to do and "sail his way to victory", while seeing the average joe fight his way to a win with the do´s and dont´s does make the vid a little more exciting. and we all have been there and some stay average a little longer then others, but hey this is just my 2 cents.
tbh the main contribution he made was not dying so the smaland had more time to carry him
@@ainumahtar in the big scheme yes but he also contributed kills and damage to even if he wasnt used to the ship. everything doesnt just boil down to not dying
@@xzeke666x Except he didn't do any appreciable damage for the first 10, arguably 15 minutes, so no, I disagree. His main contribution was just not dying, which meant that there was an Iowa there which probably kept at least some of the enemies from pushing, but mostly "because Iowa" and not because Erik was effective in it.
@@ainumahtar i didnt say he did alot of damage and kills etc, but he had some kills and damage witch contributed. when you are new to a ship you are not effective in it, noone really is until you learn the ship. but just saying that him not dying was his only contribution is not right or true
@@xzeke666xhe got kills because the enemy gave him free kills.
9:47 he isn't using his smoke mr jingles, because he used it just outside of the B cap on the right, to hide from the airstrikes 😅
Jingles never change, blind for one thing, focus on another
Good team effort with poor DD's breaking their back doing the heavy lifting 👍🏻
That burning plane flying by @1502 was hilarious
I had to replay that a few times 😂
Watching Papa Erik sail the LONG way around the south of the map for the first half of the match was just painful.
It's fun to watch as the match progresses. His aiming improves little by little. I had this when I got the North Carolina, those super heavy shells does come with a learning curve. But once you nailed it they are God tier.
Once ingot my Monty and fully speced into damage, one Grosser Kurfurst lost 66k of his health in one salvo
This! The first time I placed shots properly on a broadsiding heavy cruiser(I can't remember the name, French tier 9) and took it from 90% health to 0 with 3 citadels I was SO happy! That being said, people in DDs and light cruisers love to flame people in Iowas for not pushing and tanking...which is exactly the opposite of what the ship is designed to do!
PapaEric, GG and thank you for your service! Congratulations on the win and getting featured on the channel. Thank you Akizuki, I mean Jingles (Oh, come on, we all know who the boss is here) for the replay!
Thanks

"Insulted by Professionals": never have I heard a more apt description.
ah... dutch panzer guys... back in the day when i was playing world of tanks i had the pleasure of stumbling across a whole bunch of them, joining their clan and having a real blast playing with them. fun times :D
Jingles was giving him a bit of a hard time for not landing shots. But im sitting hear impressed that he did not die early on. Thats a major win even if you can not hit the broadside of a barn. Just not dieing is a great help to the team
Very true.
I noticed that in chat that somebody told publicly for both teams to see where his team mate is and he shortly died after that. Hilarius.
Ackshually Jingles 🤓, the torps came from the Iwami that was just sunk, yes the Iwami has torpedoes, also I just realised something is this a secondary Iowa? I think I just saw the skill that improves the ships secondary accuracy, yep definitely, not judging that part, I put a secondary build on the st. Vincent
Yes I have the strange habbit to make all my battleship a secondary build, to compensate to my poor aiming something :)
"...struggling with the ballistics" is flowerbunchian for "can´t shoot for shite"^^ (no harm done pls, erik^^)
Good game PapaErik and from an average player like myself this makes me smile to see a game like this congrats dude
Another jingles video, goes well with dinner :D
This game gives me hope that my Destroyer replay I sent in may one day be graced with a mighty cast from Jingles. :)
Well played PapaErik. Great show Jingles!
Finally, A guy that knows how to spell Erik correctly! lol My commiserations on the struggle with the US AP rounds. Took me a while as well. Nice job and congrats on the win. Cheers!
Thanks for showing this gameplay - as an average player myself, it's good to be reminded that sometimes one of the best things you can do for your team is not do anything stupid and survive long enough to make a difference
Congrats on the Iowa and the win Papa Eric. As a USA military vet its always a pleasure to meet a vet from another country. (this includes both of you haha) :)
One thing I love is that we know the exact moment when Papa thought to himself "OMG, I'm sending this to Jingles!"
Thanks for featuring this video, Jingles. I feel miles better about my own games after watching this dude miss for 10 straight minutes.
The opposing team definitely contributed more than their fair share of this victory, but Papa Erik put in a darn fine showing. I actually enjoyed this one video a great deal!
good morning across the pond jingles just finished my shift and a great way to end my day
A fair video comes with fair criticism. First of all, it is great that erik managed to get a nice score, especially when it comes to the ballistics that can be quite unique ship to ship. However, I see no reason why he is running a secondary build spec on a ship that is mostly designed around its main guns. Of course, every player is free to build their ship how they like, but afaik, the strength of the iowa comes from the mobility and the main battery firepower, rather than the secondary guns, which would be better suited for a ship like the massa
Dunno how hard it is to respec, but one thing jumps to mind; While you're still learning how to shoot the main guns, why not give the secondaries a boost since those guys are already aimbots.
This is your best work. I've followed your for some time and I truly appreciate how positive your were. You allowed PapaErik to be imperfect. You called no one "stupid". I very much like your WoWs content. I loved today's installment. 07
Loving this Jingles, thanks for that!
I'm just as average a player and yes, seeing PapaErik getting used to the guns is painfully familiar, but still a great replay to watch with thanks to your commentary.
All I can do is salute you both, the best way I know how
Anyone else think jingle would make an excellent conductor on Thomas the Tank engine? Top notch voice over work!
Jingles, as a fellow Veteran (US Army), I can only warn that us average World Of Warships Players and Military Veterans may prey upon your excellent spin doctoring to be featured in an upcoming episode by simply doing OK and hoping for someone else to carry us to "not quite mediocrity". Either way, thank you to PapaErik and to you for your fellow Service.
This is why whenever I get a new ship, I immediately take it into the co-op battle mode. The meager experience points and the modest credits are bonuses, but gunnery practice and air drills are the name of the game until I've worked out how to fight with the ship. How to actually use it properly comes from the random battles where, I'm more often than not, bending over and thinking of Lady Liberty.
havent watched the might one in a long time, im writing this before the video starts to say i cannot wait to hear his voice again
The true horror is on the minimap 6,5 -7 friendly ships are held off at A by 3 enemies and 3 friendles start kiting, others stand still or just sail around back and forth. I do not understand.
I felt his pain with every shot. I do the exact same thing in my Alabama lol.
PapaErik, thanks for your game, aand your service
Another great video Jingles. Love the content :)
A few years back I got 2 cruisers and a DD to join me on two brothers to go down the center of the map when I was grinding my Tier 5 German BB and we ruined people’s days but this took us quite a few efforts
Being in the same average over-the-hill ex-military average player I loved that this game showed that we are not all unicoms.
Some of the dispersions of those shots. Sweet jesus. Every time i feel like playing again i just watch a wows video, look at the bb dispersions and decide "nah fuck this pos game".
It's because he's specd into secondaries instead of main guns.
its nice to see some average gameplay time by time. it already takes balls to average player to send replay to jingles if they know its average game with some twist
Old timers - in your 50s?! Jingles, you’re making me feel rather ancient!
this could be labeled as a game of throws mixed with Average Erik
Thanks for a fun video J Man
Jingles finally posts an iowa video that I’ve been waiting on for a while as I’m currently in love with mine and grinding towards the Montana and he FORGETS TO GIVE HIS THOUGHTS ON THE DAMN IOWA.
Probably because it's one of the original Tier IX BBs. Then again, he's gone back and added flavor for _Des Moines_ recently, discussing how its position in the meta has changed over the years (and how it hasn't.)
@@boobah5643I know but I really wanted to hear him talk about it. I use his advice quite a bit when looking for new tech lines to go up
5:48
And while Jingles was nattering about DDs, he missed Erik hanging 10K on that Smolensk.
The start of this battle was more frustrating than watching the Royal and Dutch navies drool into a cup in the south Pacific in early WWII.
The 2nd half though... Erik treated his enemies like they were trying to declare independence from him.
Thanks for featuring one us average schmucks.
glad you did watch and play this one
Dear Rear Admiral Mighty Jingles,
on behalf of .. myself, as I cannot speak for others ... I would like to point out, that it is rather your excellent commentary than the moving pictures in the background that entertains us ... err, ME.
Therefore, if I might be so bold to offer advice that was not asked for, I would like to suggest, however humbly, that the Rear Admiral could present to his devoted followers the most common of gameplays and spice it up through the power of his narration, the genious of his wordplay and the epitome of what makes UA-cam such a great place: the ambiguity of hyperbolism. ;-))))))
@13:30, those were Iwami torps,(one of the gimics of that ship) and its a good thing he dodged them too, they hit like a truck, typical for ijn torpedo's
I like Erik!! Thx Jingles!
Lets hear it for those lethal Iowa secondaries!
8:55 cv being salty about his team not capping, while refusing to support with any fighters, though being very close to the cap himself. Classic.
13:45 Those were Iwami's torpedoes. She has Shimakaze's default torpedoes: 20km range, slow, high detectability, max of 23k damage. Only difference is her launchers are one quad per side while Shimakaze has 3 quints mounted centerline.
Scraping the barrel, are we, Jingles? Props though, never slept as bloody well to any other thing...
Oh look, a video of the battleships on my team! Barely a scratch on the paint, lobbing shells across the map. Self-preservation is the better part of valour, eh?
I would like to see videos like this more often for learning experience. you can break down errors and we could learn from that....well...ideally
From one over the hill veteran to another Erik, well done sir. I do believe that at 69 years young I've got both you and our favorite Gnome by a few.
While there are different ways of "being useful" for some reason I strongly suspect that "Not dying" while still making attacks is certainly right up there.
I'm just guessing, but I'm sure there's more than a few of us in our fifties, are veterans, an enjoy watching Jingles lol.
Bloody well done by Papa Erik in the late hours I say !!........and Smöland !
14:55 was cinematic
Eric: Consistently underleads shots
Also Eric: Was a tank gunner
I don't doubt the real thing is much harder. Wait, that doesn't help.
All fun and games ;)
Real thing is easier, just lazer point target, drink a coffee and shot when ever it feels good ;)
Tell he was a tanker, he hides behind a hill. And waits for enemy to make him reverse. He could work for Wagner Group! Nice vid as always!
Jingles you fool! The Tromp was long dead by the time PapaErik took on the ships in the bottom left corner.
I'm pretty sure he builds in those silly mistakes in order to spark comments. So here, have mine.
It's a specific skill to LET your teammates CARRY you. Playing League of Legends, I see people capturing resources, giving the enemy team a lot of resources, trying to be the protagonist, when all they needed to do was serve as a distraction and they would'Ve won.
Just surviving is a step in the right direction, more often than not.
Well I'll be Jingled! It's another offering from our Overlord!
not to sound like a ass but that first half is a prime example of what not to do in your BB especially a iowa... now with that being said, the second half of the game was pretty fun to watch lol. Good game papaerik
what, sitting in the back and only shooting at targets more than 20 miles away..... you surely jest!! LOL
You know I swear i just watched an American battleship replay...Or maybe my day is repeating.
Over the Hill military veteran? I resemble that remark. You're a youngster Jingles.
I can relate to Eriks struggle with the guns on the Iowa. Those shells are soo effin slow.
aKtuAllY, Jingles, PE would have probably smacked that Mogami if it hadn't just ran into their own Iwami. LOL
you a riot, bro! "advanced in years". i did 21 in the USN, and retired at age 41 in Feb 1993. the USN has now paid me to just breathe for 30 years. i wonder what the vet population in your channel is, here? i wouldn't be surprised if it was a tad higher than in others.
Im a DD main. I can’t give BB advice to PapaErik but The most important piece of advice I ever received when I was just starting was that the 4 functions of a DD in any match were (in that order):
1. Survive
2. Spot
3. Cap
4. Deal damage
Any DD player should live and act by those goals
A few things that are apparent that Erik can fix is: stop investing into secondaries with your commander/modules in USA BBs (other than Ohio), and use grease the gears (could be wrong, but it didn't look like he had it).
That was a secondary build Iowa. What a mad lad lmao.
"We've been insulted by professionals."
And they had some especially good ones every payday.
Another mighty inghels video :D
This reminds me of a game I had in the USS Kidd. I'm a pretty average player, but this one particular game I managed to turn the tide of the battle by scoring 5 kills, just for the few remaining ships to throw it all away by getting themselves killed when all they needed to do was just run away....
so jingles is showing the above average matches of average players looks like i picked the right time to send one in lol
Ill back up my armored brethren with this. The most important thing is, was it fun..... i can play extremely well in WOWS, WOT. But there are many times that im just like "fuck it, just a game. Lets make this fun" and then get another vic from the garage a min later .
Better to be lucky than good. Works in liberty ports as well 😎. 26 CG Vet sends Jingles. Fair winds,,,,
Just a pronunciation tip for the future, try saying the å i småland as either the o in Smolensk, or like the a in small.
Great vid as always Jingles
In case erik is waatching this, that timer on the bottom left of your reticle tells you how long it will take for your shells to reach where youre aiming. The numbers on your reticle tell you how much lead you should take based on that timer. The numbers are calibrated for a ship doing 30kts. I still suck in US BBs with their shells since they move so slowly, but this should help quite a bit.
I imagine that he played like if it was a real ship and a real battle - keeping distance and trying to survive.
5:58 I had to check and make sure i wasnt that friendly Schlieffen, because that sounds like something i would do in it lol. You cant give me all those secondaries and have me not find any excuse to use them :D
The other day Flamu was once again blaming bad game play on the "boomers", and I pointed out that wow pop says the average age in warships is 28 years old. Yup, most players are not bommers, thus most of the bad play is not us. I reality I am sick of him laying bad play on our door. So there ya have it.
To be honest, I like watching average games lol. Often just simple positioning wins games, and also tanking by Battleships which in a way allows enemy ships to be spotted. GG Papa Eric, more lead on those shots, it's very very annoying how usa bb line ballistics changes so much as you go up the tiers, worst is from colorado to north carolina. Good Luck Have Fun Brotatoes.
Yeah, I remember going to NC from Colorado, with everyone in my clan constantly claiming the line would finally get good, but I hated every single game I played in that ship.
Actually I quite enjoy an average game on UA-cam. It lets you see some of the mistakes you might make yourself and is a learning opportunity which you don't quite get when you're in the thick of the fight yourself.
I have been that player most of my 3 years and was happy playing. Top Players need Average Players to Play.
4 torps, probably the Iwami dropped them, the Tromp only has triple torp launchers, and they reach out 20km, and Eric has a secondary build on his Iowa, as a main gun/survivability build only boosts secondaries to 7.3 km, and his main gun only reach out 23.3 km, vs the 24.6 km of a base Iowa with APR mod 1.
to be fair Jingles, everyone has the ability to download mod station, and get the mod that tells you how soon you will win,
LOL -- I would say I constantly have to readjust as I change ships as those arcs and ballistics across the differing BB's change so much. But I am able to change how I am aiming at another ship after one salvo and I realize yep high arc on this one. And if Papa got to the Iowa he should have been used to those high arc long time American shells. So to be open and honest, the team almost lost early on as Papa could not do his job as an Iowa and failed to adjust quick enough. And the team only won due to Red being overly aggressive at the end (Oh we are up so much lets try to kill all) despite their low health. And interesting match, and Papa was lucky. As you said, just any standard WoW player. Congrats to him on the win.
