It looks like a Chinese knot to me. They used this back in the day when making clothes - they would use scrap cloth to make the buttons. They still do it on traditional garments.
Well, at first I thought you were right! But, then I went back to The Ashley Book of Knots, and from what I can tell this is a Chinese Button Knot or also called a Pajama Knot (The Ashley Book of Knots #599). There is another slightly bigger Chinese Button which is knot #604 (The Ashley book of knots). Thank you for your comment. But, unless you can prove to me otherwise, it is going to stay a Chinese Button Knot.
There isn't any trick to tightening the knot. You just have to keep pushing on it until it tightens up into its rounder shape. Once you get it close, you can tighten it by pulling on one string and running all the way through around the knot. The smoother the line, the easier it is to tighten, that's why I used parachute cord.
Beautiful knot, and good instructional video, although it could use some explanation of the carrick bend as a start and how does it differ from the diamond / lanyard knot. Just my 2 cents. Thanks a lot for the video.
Thank you! Well, it varies from string to string and it is mainly related to how thick the string is. I usually start with a long string and cut the excess later. Better safe than sorry! :)
Thank you! Is it too much to ask ? Like if you are making a jacket then you have to make the same material buttons, and making the string of your own is so dificult for me, maybe coz i dont have any tools or experience, is there special technic to make your own string? Thank you again
peldon kinlay You can ask as many questions as you want and I'd be happy to answer to the best of my knowledge! I would say, get some yards of string of your desired type! Do some practice, finish the knot, then mark your string at both ends when you're done - including the excess that you need for sewing the button to the jacket! Then you should know how long of string it takes for each button. Then do the math and you'll know if you have enough length or you should get some more! It's rather practical and theoretical. Start and I'm sure you'll do just fine!
Thanks for your time and patients! I can make the knots after seeing your tut, with readymade strings. But what i mean is so difficult to make the strings by myself. Do you have any video on that? Thanks
Thank you! Please find in the video's description, the link to the related video on our website, and read more about this knot. Let us know what you think about the website and this post! Thank you in advance! :)
tim hitt actually in his defense I think he messed up , having to pull all that loose line through. Their is a video to show you how to pinch either side and pull it to get it to come out right. I've watched some videos and couldn't follow what they were doing. Then some kid did it in 1 minute and I could follow him lol. Go figure PEACE
It is not a diamond knot or lanyard knot, @SignedSign. It is indeed the Chinese button knot or ABOK #599 (Ashley's Book of Knots). The lamyard or diamond knot is #787. They both start with a Carrick Bend. But #787 goes arpund the other loop strands and then enters through the middke. Whereas in the Chinese Button knot it leaves that step out and enters into the middle on the same side where it exits.
Mabel Marble it is a diamond knot, it can be tied in several different ways to allow different amount of strings or loops to come out of it, it can even be tied as a loose sliding knot on another piece of string/rope, and yet its the same knot, a diamond knot.
Finally! Yours is like the 4th or so instructional vid I’ve watched for this knot and it worked! Success! Now I can move on with life, thank you! 😆

Chinese Gongfu Academy 5
That's exactly what the title says. Lol
They really made this look harder than it is. I learned to to it another way and I think the one I learned is easier
Yes, it is almost exactly like the diamond knot except for the last to tucks.
It's also called Mongolian deel button/knots. I learned it from my mum, but need to practice it.
Thanks for the comment! Good luck! :)

Thanks for the how to video.
You're welcome! :)
I only can say wonderful!
Thanks! :)
Ha, You couldn't resist the lure of the Chinese Button Knot!
This is wonderful! Can you tell me how long string you need for 1 button and the extra for attaching on the jacket? Thank you

is where any difference between this and the diamond knot??? new at the the knots hobby...
Thanks, that is good to know! But, this is also called a Chinese Button Knot in the United States and other places.
It's a decorative knot, therefore people don't care how long they spend on it! :-)
You MAKE it LOOK to hard to MAKE...and it's really EASY to make another way...thanks
That looks hard as hell.

The explanation until the knot was nearly done was good, but the sequence and how pushing the hooks were not clear at all..

This is not Chinese, but Dimonds knot. Otherwise, your video is very well done
It is not the chinesse button nor the Diamon Knot it is a french royal navy knot and the true name is the" Noeud sifflet du Bosco".

Sorry man this isn`t chinese button knot, this button knot is named "сампин" And used in
mongolian traditional clothes of "дээл"
Why in the world would anyone want to go through the torment of tying this knot? That is a 6 minute knot with someone that knows how to tie it!
