PET Scans and Cancer

PET scans are a type of test that creates three-dimensional (3D) pictures of the inside of your body. These scans use a mildly radioactive drug to show up areas of your body where cells are more active than usual. PET scans reveal possible cancerous areas earlier than other forms of testing, making them very valuable for early detection and treatment.
They can also be used to determine how much cancer is in a person's body and how far cancer has spread. Since it can detect more cancerous sites than CT scans alone, they are often used in the initial staging and follow-up testing to see if and how the cancer is spreading. In addition, PET scan results may lead to changes in your treatment plan.
