- India's "Naatu Naatu" and The Elephant Whisperer achieved a historic win at the Oscars. The win was well-deserved. But it comes with mixed feelings. Does India need the Oscar validation? What does it mean for us? And are Oscars the right judge for international films? Palki Sharma explains.

I mean....not that RRR doesn't deserve the win. But it already won million hearts across the globe. If this year's Oscars have high viewership rating, then it's because of RRR.
And palki mam said it correctly, the RRR did more favour to the Oscars, then the Oscars did to RRR. .....
Again global? Indians ko accha lag gaya matlab movie is successful , bahar ke log dekhe , na dekhe fark nahi padhna chahiye if you're a true nationalist. Start decolon1zing yourselves.
It was their plan to make viewership
Rightly said 👍.. I thought so too.. Thanks for putting it out
@Uchiha Itachi that's the thing.. If really care to preserve our culture then that's should be our focus.. It does feel bad but it's true that we have an clingy and looking for validation attitude in general big time..... We have to get our focus as sharp as possible or else in this ringa ringa roses show of pretending to be modern will completly lose our roots, & a tree without root dies... (just a reference see for instant Japan, even though they have hardest working citizens which made them the futuristic country of the planet they are facing serious social behavioral issues leading to their extinction, simply because somewhere they did get distance from their roots, apart from language and noodls and the natural difference in appearance that too is given by nature, where is the real Japan?)..... We have to be comfortable with the idea that we love our culture whether someone understands it or not that's it and in the process if it is appreciated then that's good for humanity in general simple.... We don't see any such gesture form Germans/Chinese/Spanish/or Japanese or American citizens seeking approval from the world and still they are respcted and are top choices for studying languages.
true
The fact that most Indian movies have had beautiful original songs and soundtracks since decades yet the Academy has never recognised any of our works is just absolutely ridiculous.
Congrats to RRR and ElephantWhisperers tho. Well deserved wins! 🎉
The movie has to become popular in the west before they recognise the songs in the movie. Naatu Naatu won because of the popularity of RRR in the west, not the other way around.

Academy award is important because It’s not about validation but there’s a hidden element of marketing our film and making it accessible to other world audiences. It expands our markets and gets better reception and business too.Honestly we weren’t able to penetrate to other non-Indian audiences across the world like how the Koreans and the Japanese have been doing.
I think it’s high time that the world audiences know what Indian cinema is capable of and winning an academy award and getting love from the west itself proves just that…

An Oscar win doesn’t mean to make us feel validated! We already know about the brilliance of movies like Bahubali or RRR. MMKeeravani has far better compositions in the past, compared to Naatu Naatu, even he himself knows it. This win doesn’t “validate” his talent!
An oscar paves the path for a wider audience of our roots and culture. Imagine how many musicians will actually follow MMK’s work now and stumble upon his earlier gems! how many ppl will try to learn a bit of Telugu, moving past the racial differences. Knowledge of other cultures removes prejudices, significantly eases international relations, trade and tourism!
If some foreigner praises our Dum Biriyani, we feel proud, not validated!
You are right we feel proud not validated and receiving an award like this paves way for global recognition of India !!!
You are validated by others comment on your work and that validation makes you proud. That means feeling proud by extrinsic means is a form of validation in itself. If you feel that your work is good and supreme, then any form of validation pales in comparison with the high that you get after observing your finished work. Oscar is a fools paradise.
FYI, RRR did get international exposure way before the Oscars or golden globes, it wasn't because of the Oscars or golden globes.
@@orientalguy9462 It is still far from mainstream. RRRs international exposure was mainly limited to film enthusiasts in the west despite being the most popular Indian movie internationally. Getting an oscar will certainly give Indian film industry more credibility outside of India and potentially expand its market reach. Although, oscar for RRR is just the first step. Other movies need to follow its footsteps from business standpoint. Still a long way to go. Rajamouli is as good a marketer as he is a director. He knows how to sell his movies. Others in the industry should learn from him.
@@harishrao2000 i think it doesn't matter much because if you see previous indipendent films from USA which have won the Oscars and which were not commercially successful they didn't see commercial success after winning the Oscars. Even the RRR was being re-release in more big screens in the west before they get these awards.
For a song released in 2022, competition wasn't much for Naatu Naatu, the catchy song that the world got hooked on to. But before 2022, there were songs that were leagues ahead of Naatu Naatu that weren't recognised by the Academy. It only took lots of campaigning for the west to open it's eyes just now to what India had to offer and that's saying something. Coming to validation by Oscars, it shouldn't be taken negatively. Like Mr. MM Keeravani said about the Oscars, "because it involves the dreams of artists from all over the world, which is not a joke. It takes a great deal of effort and credibility. That's why the Oscars is the Oscars. That's why we respect and value it very much. And I'm very proud to be nominated for the first time from [South] Asia in this music category. I'm thrilled."
I take getting an oscar as more of a soft power increase of India on a global level. Tbh we are far behind globally when it comes to soft power. For eg:- Japan has anime,Thailand has BLs,South korea has kpop and kdrama,China has cdrama,US has Hollywood. So we need to increase our soft power as well which showcases our positive side coz everyone around the globe is only shown a negative side of ours.

Congratulations to India! Having said that, India does not need an Oscar as validation, it is West that is growing (although way too slow) and learns to recognize and value the Indian cinema. It is West that will be asking for recognition from India once it reaches higher levels in terms or art and cinema, philosophy and culture. It is a huge injustice though that Kantara or movies from Sanjay Leela Bhansali have not won an Oscar as well. So, India can and needs to be happy and proud, but does not need a validation. We (as the rest of the world) need to congratulate, celebrate, respect and look forward to indian success.

THIS.. the tactics + woke inclusive + Oscars dropping viwership
For all those who are finding faults or shortcomings with Oscars, let’s ask ourselves a basic question as Indians..why don’t we have one Filmfare for ALL Indian Films??
For that matter any regional films in India were not given the same importance as the films made in Hindi until one man disrupted the industry and broke all the norms. We should in-fact be thankful to Oscars that we have been given an opportunity to showcase our talent on a global stage which opens doors for all regional films and even documentaries like the Elephant Whisperers. How many of the top Hindi actors or politicians have even acknowledged and bothered to congratulate RRR team…where are all these people hiding..let’s think big but take the right steps heading in that direction with a positive attitude. To sum it up, if you question why Indian Films should be validated by Oscars, you should also think why Filmfare failed to do the same that Oscars can do to recognize global talent, thereby automatically putting India in the leadership position and then we validate Hollywood movies in-turn..is that a fair statement?

Hello Ma'am, I usually do not comment but after watching this I think you should know other perspective too.
I agree that india have vast viewers and not just Oscar the whole world needs us in many ways but at the same time we also need them at the same level if not more. We Indian have grown ourselves into the mentality that we have population/viewers/market/workforce so we aren't need of others but it's completely wrong there needs to have a equilibrium and the world is reaching to it, if not already arrived. Also Oscar may have taken RRR into consideration cause of emerging market in India but tell if not the market then what should they look apart from obvious things like director/actor/song or anything that relates to movie. There is thousands of high quality movie coming every year and they can't give Oscar to all of them. So criteria changes to something else.
Our mentality is changing into something which aren't appreciated at all levels, we are important for the world so as the world, it is important for our survival too.
With all due respect. this is the time to celebrate. If you really don’t care about Oscar’s for RRR there is other time to mention not when most of the people celebrate. You can keep quote if you don’t like it.
You don't want to win because of political correctness that's not what your about , you win because of your talent , that's all.
Do check out the documentary if not checked out, this was the calf rescued in forest very close to Bangalore/Hosur and taken to Madhumalai for rehabilitation. Its such a warm hearted story and insight to people who still live in forests and care for the animals.
What’s wrong with you people? Just enjoy the moment, it’s not validation rather recognition of the effort put into and how people across the globe enjoyed.
Winning an Oscar is indeed important! How many Indians knew Rajamouli before Bahubali other than the Telugus and some south indians? If he would have thought as the same way this video says, he would been limited to Telugu cinema itself. After Bahubali he became popular throughout India coz of his sheer passion, risk, hardwork and dreaming something that no South Indian director of his generation dared to. Now he wants to gain fame in the Western World too and this RRR campaign could be the stepping stone. Some might argue if the Oscars is broken but I would still say it is still much better than the Natioanl awards, filmfare etc as 10k academy members who are distinguished in their fields vote for the Oscars
We Indians need to change our mindset now.
We NO MORE NEED American or European recognition or validation of our unique art and culture or anything else that is indigenous to our country.
All prize is good prize.
Don't participate if don't wanna win. Ask all the winners if want it or not.
Of course the highest prize in any industry or stream is a form of validation. Winning gives you so many good emotions. It's the not winning that should be taken in way to not loose hope and go again with full force.
We still have that colonial mindset where we need a ‘goras’ validation to feel confident of our talent.
As i feel it's nothing like that bro.. world should know the essence of Indian cinema right.. with this we get a chance to explore ourselves in many ways.. am sorry if I was wrong..

This has nothing to do with white supremacy or colonial mindset. US might be "west" for you but what is famous in US is famous worldwide. Stop looking at America as a "gora" country. They are not looking for Americans' approval or validation. This is a path to global recognition.
A British film, Slumdog millionaire, got popular worldwide after winning Oscars and that unfortunately put India on the world map as a slum country.
Be glad, Indian cinemas are now appreciated for quality, acting, innovative action sequences and decent CGI. Winning an award for an incredible dance number is just a cherry on the top.
Ahhhhhhh idk why many Indians are saying this.... First of all we are not celebrating cuz of the "validation" we got from receiving the Oscar.... But we are celebrating the "Exposure" we got from receiving it.... RRR has truly shown a different side of Indian cinema and attracted a lot of international viewers towards Indian cinema... And that's why we celebrated our Oscar win.... Not any other reason period!
P M Same you will run to america at the first chance if given an option 🤡
But I think when anchors ,news channels of India speak English to increase their audience why don't our films try to grab the audience of west and global..We should that only make us to show our strength in different categories....Truly kudos to #RRR and #elephant whispers for doing this...🥳🥳🥳
Looks more to me Palki is looking for her own sensationalism than Oscar looking for better ratings. Give it some time. Palki !!! Enough Negativity in the name of balanced journalism.
The biggest problem is that the Indian movie awards like "Filmfare awards" are often rumoured to be purchased by the highest bidders. I mean look at Times of India main or supplements. It's nothing better than a collection of advertisements and promotion campaigns.
It's most streamed movie on Netflix. Definitely Netflix need more viewership and the potential new market - india
Zelensky wants one.
The best male actor in a supporting role is apt.
@@SN23031978 worst actor tbh. He deserves golden raspberry.
Congrats to "Naatu Naatu" and The Elephant Whisperers. Wow! These are not Oscar validations, these are Oscar appreciations. Too bad that Palki sounds bitter with her misplaced pride.
Thank you! Good journalism here! Great questions!!
That’s what I thought when I heard the news.
Colo1al mindset which still Indians has unfortunately 😶.
In that case, this logic can be applied to every other award out there. Do we really need those awards to validate our feelings?
It is as simple as that 'What you give is what you get' ✌️ followed by one of the universal laws. Rise Roar Respect #RRR 🙏🏻🙏🏻
🙄 I just don’t understand the society or the media. When people around you looks joyful and happy try to learn to be happy for them. No need of your opinions. Learn how to enjoy the joyful moments, peace ✌🏽
for me it is our soft power. thanks to dr.jaishankar sir
As per ur logic if RRR lobbied their way at oscars why didn't they get any other nomination? They couldn't even lobby film federation of india to be selected as official entry. Money can't buy it is marketing they showcased their product to larger audience based on the initial reviews which were encouraging
Like RC stated we doesn't care but cinema is also an industry thus to publicity and open India cinema to the world and to attract global audience we needed Oscars .
We all know how western soft power is mainly due to Hollywood.
Taking Tollywood to Hollywood not only to capture global audience but created a window for Indian cinemas.
I personally think bhahubali walked so that RRR can run .
Now RRR ran in the west we can expect what changes might come.
this topic comes in when someone cannot compete. its not about validation, its about change in perception and competition. it doesn't matter when someone win aa filmfare in India. it does matter when the competition is huge.
Yes. Indian films need these kind of OSCAR awards and show how great is our culture, food to the world and get highest appreciation and also to grow the Indian film business globally.
As usual you are spot on. Their channels, their awards, their products, their language almost everything is promoted as worlds highest standard. Indeed it is not true.
Indian movies do not need validation from Oscars and it is ridiculous how some people are going overboard about the award being given to RRR for its 'original music' and the Elephant Whisperer' a documentary. As for original music there are any number of Indian movies whose music was not only original but divine and magical. Mahal, Pyaasa, Mughal e Azam, Mere Mehboob, Mera Saya, Woh Kaun Thi, Pakizah, Kabhi Kabhi, Silsila, etc. The music of these movies and many more is outstanding in every sense of the word. In recent years, the music of films like Aashiqui-2 was also good. I have only named Hindi movies. Music of the movies of other languages is equally good. It seems that Oscar's organisers were tone deaf for all these years.
Its not just about the songs themselves. Oscars are American awards however they try to color it. Natu natu became a hit, not on its own, but bcs of the movie RRR and western attention it got by word of mouth. So the movie team capitalised on that publicity. We have had far better songs than this, but not a movie as grand and as appealing as RRR to the western audience. Remember majority of the jury is white people.
We are our worst enemies. Instead of celebrating, we are discussing about the oscar validation. No, we don't need oscar validation, we already got that from audience and the award is just a cherry on top, but that recognisation opens the biggest door possible in the world in terms of reach. Just like it happend to South Korea with parasite and Squid Game, it happend to India with RRR.
So instead of being a cynical, be happy that today more people know about our film industry, culture and people then yesterday. Just enjoy the show.
It is not about validation…. It is about creating the exposure and thereby expanding the market (in terms of audience and revenue) …
Naatu Naatu to westerners was fresh, new & the choreography elevated the song to a new level with 2 massive stars.
Why do these stupid questions like "do we need Oscars as validation?" After we won.
Just be happy we won & they gave us a chance to take Indian cinema globally.
Even the lyrics were written to show the raw nature of our dance & we don't need refined dance steps to be shown that is dance itself, when we can embrace our own dance style.
Hearty Congratulations to the winners. S/Sri Bose, Keeravani, Rajamouli made a mark for themselves in Telugu/Indian film industry. What is the difference. Others also liked it. Value and celebrate our genuine greats. others will follow....
Critical value may not count. But the fact that they can't ignore India, Indian talent is priceless.... More will follow... Same happened with Miss universe and Miss world some years back
Oscar loves EXOTIC india ,🇮🇳
Sahi baat hai.
Anyone can make music like naatu naatu but the real winner is the elephant whisperers
To be honest I also learnt that not all indian movies are not bollywood quite recently...I enjoy telugu ones... I've stumbled across some that are simply amazing among my favs of all time they've taught me alot about a new culture, we need to watch each other's films, experience each other's art, it's like virtual tourism in a way.
We should support our awards and take them to their standards...
Validation is something you dont get when you seek it
True 👏
RRR was more than the song it should have won the Best picture.
🫤
It's a delight to watch Palki's presentation of news.
This is very true. I have no interest in Oscar's. I only looked at it this year in part to see if RRR would win. Indian film industry should never feel inferior to Hollywood. 95% of the films coming out Hollywood is 'crap!'
When we can't win Oscars on the regular, we talk like this. Nice coping mechanism 👏👏👏.
NOBODY said we need their validation, but getting the recognition sure does help. Go and tell this to the team that made RRR, and they'll laugh at you.
Maybe Bollywood should make a 1st world themed movie that is good enough to get nominated.
Congratulations!!!
It is the Choreography that propelled the Oscar. The highly energetic steps that enthralled people around the globe.
I hope that RRR team will be hired to direct a Hollywood movie.
I understand you are asking this question for your marketing and Oscars are looking at Asian market and nothing wrong in capitalizing on all publicity Indian cinema can get. Nothing wrong with RRR getting validated with Oscars
Exactly what I was thinking and then I saw this post. 👍👏👏👏
You are right Palki. Bollywood don't need Oscal validation. It needs Filmfare award or Zee Cine award or Ghanta Award... Where actors can buy the award OR Just agree to attend the award function OR just perform 1 song at award function to get the award. Ha ha ha.
Please be real.
It is not a validation but a recognition which can be a prime motivator for filmmaker s for India to compete and learn from global films , making more competitive movies,to break from conventional movie making revolving on love story and item songs.also responsibility is on viewers to show love to best films and discard those which are not .we want Indian cinema to go global
here global films means american films for you, there was a film festival i think we could have learnt from others in that event
@@shivam_nagar69 of course American films are considered global. Can you name any other film industry in the world that's as popular as Hollywood? What's famous in Hollywood is famous worldwide.
@@steverogers__ but if you want to learn about movies, why the fuck you consider american films as global, i thought oscars were about movies made in every country
HYPOCRISY at it's best lol
@@shivam_nagar69 firstly who the h3ll is saying they want to learn about movies??? When you talk to me talk about what I am saying, not what others said. I don't take responsibility for what others say.
Secondly, yes, American films are considered global (at least for now). Unless you are living under a rock, don't you know how many fans around the world waited for the release of Avengers, Avatar or Star Wars movies? Pick any film from any other industry that was most awaited by the fans around the world. I dare you!
Thirdly, Oscars are American Awards, not global. They don't go around selecting films from every country. There's a category for best foreign film and that's it! However, Any film is considered for oscars if it is released in the US and has a successful run like RRR or Parasite. Films from other countries competing with American films here in the US and winning an award in the general category is a huge deal! Try to learn something before barking at others with your half knowledge.
Why did you said now after winning oscar by RRR. Your tagline is "Take on the world" but films cant take on the world. What a pity.
Great take on the topic. Have been questioning the value of an oscar since Slumdog for years.
Even the biggest blockbusters in India don't come anywhere close to grossing the kind of money that American movies make. You might not need the validation from an Oscar, but the kind of exposure that films get from being nominated and winning an Oscar will surely help not only that film, but many more like it, potentially earn more money in the future. At the end of the day, this is a business and money is always the bottom line. Don't forget that. Praise from your fellow countrymen is all well and good, but how is that going to help produce bigger and better quality content going forward? I have never seen a country who likes to bite off their nose to spite their own face like India.
Thank you for this. Finally a news channel is giving out what audience might consider a thought to ponder on.
When we failed at oscars, people ask why we always fail. When we bag one, they ask why do we need oscar. Hmm… I’m confused.
While others were so focused on validation, palki again hit the nail at the right time.
Oscar is big because it’s the best award in Hollywood- it gives you recognition in a global platform . The reach is what the golden award gives you . All over the globe every film lover, workers and crew watch oscars . So that’s why Oscar is big . What are we suppose to trust Indian award who gives Ananya award lol. If Indian awards were given to the deserving talent then oscars will be ad on than the best thing to happen. Why do you think Indians mostly like national award. It’s fare . Western gives non western awards only to market themselves and asians are obsessed with west mostly .. power of money . The day every country person starts respecting and being fare to their own ppl , this westernisation will go on…
