  • India's "Naatu Naatu" and The Elephant Whisperer achieved a historic win at the Oscars. The win was well-deserved. But it comes with mixed feelings. Does India need the Oscar validation? What does it mean for us? And are Oscars the right judge for international films? Palki Sharma explains.

I mean....not that RRR doesn't deserve the win. But it already won million hearts across the globe. If this year's Oscars have high viewership rating, then it's because of RRR.
And palki mam said it correctly, the RRR did more favour to the Oscars, then the Oscars did to RRR. .....

@Uchiha Itachi that's the thing.. If really care to preserve our culture then that's should be our focus.. It does feel bad but it's true that we have an clingy and looking for validation attitude in general big time..... We have to get our focus as sharp as possible or else in this ringa ringa roses show of pretending to be modern will completly lose our roots, & a tree without root dies... (just a reference see for instant Japan, even though they have hardest working citizens which made them the futuristic country of the planet they are facing serious social behavioral issues leading to their extinction, simply because somewhere they did get distance from their roots, apart from language and noodls and the natural difference in appearance that too is given by nature, where is the real Japan?)..... We have to be comfortable with the idea that we love our culture whether someone understands it or not that's it and in the process if it is appreciated then that's good for humanity in general simple.... We don't see any such gesture form Germans/Chinese/Spanish/or Japanese or American citizens seeking approval from the world and still they are respcted and are top choices for studying languages.

Academy award is important because It’s not about validation but there’s a hidden element of marketing our film and making it accessible to other world audiences. It expands our markets and gets better reception and business too.Honestly we weren’t able to penetrate to other non-Indian audiences across the world like how the Koreans and the Japanese have been doing.

An Oscar win doesn’t mean to make us feel validated! We already know about the brilliance of movies like Bahubali or RRR. MMKeeravani has far better compositions in the past, compared to Naatu Naatu, even he himself knows it. This win doesn’t “validate” his talent!
An oscar paves the path for a wider audience of our roots and culture. Imagine how many musicians will actually follow MMK’s work now and stumble upon his earlier gems! how many ppl will try to learn a bit of Telugu, moving past the racial differences. Knowledge of other cultures removes prejudices, significantly eases international relations, trade and tourism!

@@orientalguy9462 It is still far from mainstream. RRRs international exposure was mainly limited to film enthusiasts in the west despite being the most popular Indian movie internationally. Getting an oscar will certainly give Indian film industry more credibility outside of India and potentially expand its market reach. Although, oscar for RRR is just the first step. Other movies need to follow its footsteps from business standpoint. Still a long way to go. Rajamouli is as good a marketer as he is a director. He knows how to sell his movies. For a song released in 2022, competition wasn't much for Naatu Naatu, the catchy song that the world got hooked on to. But before 2022, there were songs that were leagues ahead of Naatu Naatu that weren't recognised by the Academy. It only took lots of campaigning for the west to open it's eyes just now to what India had to offer and that's saying something. Coming to validation by Oscars, it shouldn't be taken negatively. Like Mr. MM Keeravani said about the Oscars, "because it involves the dreams of artists from all over the world, which is not a joke. It takes a great deal of effort and credibility. That's why the Oscars is the Oscars. That's why we respect and value it very much. And I'm very proud to be nominated for the first time from [South] Asia in this music category. I'm thrilled."

For eg:- Japan has anime,Thailand has BLs,South korea has kpop and kdrama,China has cdrama,US has Hollywood. It is West that will be asking for recognition from India once it reaches higher levels in terms or art and cinema, philosophy and culture. It is a huge injustice though that Kantara or movies from Sanjay Leela Bhansali have not won an Oscar as well. So, India can and needs to be happy and proud, but does not need a validation. I am very happy for the teams behind the song and the documentary that won, they deserve it, but also equally feel bad that we are celebrating a recognition from an institution that doesn't give our art-work the same weightage they give to their's. It has always felt feel like it's their thing and we excused ourselves into that club, and now seeking validation. While happy that our work got recognition, it certainly doesn't feel like it deserve to be celebrated as if it's a pinnacle of accomplishments. These token awards feel like a validation we are seeking. Also why we call ourselves Bollywood, Tollywood etc which sound like a knock-off/cheap versions of Hollywood! I hope to see India cinema come together and adopt names that sound Indian. We have produced so many great movies, and has potential to produce many more. It gives Asian and Indian movies the much needed exposure to compete with Hollywood. The incredible potential of the Indian film industry needs to be harnessed in the right direction and getting the Oscar is a good start. For that matter any regional films in India were not given the same importance as the films made in Hindi until one man disrupted the industry and broke all the norms. We should in-fact be thankful to Oscars that we have been given an opportunity to showcase our talent on a global stage which opens doors for all regional films and even documentaries like the Elephant Whisperers. How many of the top Hindi actors or politicians have even acknowledged and bothered to congratulate RRR team…where are all these people hiding..let’s think big but take the right steps heading in that direction with a positive attitude. To sum it up, if you question why Indian Films should be validated by Oscars, you should also think why Filmfare failed to do the same that Oscars can do to recognize global talent, thereby automatically putting India in the leadership position and then we validate Hollywood movies in-turn..is that a fair statement?

So yes, if we are to make a dent in the soft power across the globe, Oscar is a great place to start. And let's not be stuck up on Kimmel's comment about Bollywood dancing. I agree that india have vast viewers and not just Oscar the whole world needs us in many ways but at the same time we also need them at the same level if not more. We Indian have grown ourselves into the mentality that we have population/viewers/market/workforce so we aren't need of others but it's completely wrong there needs to have a equilibrium and the world is reaching to it, if not already arrived. Also Oscar may have taken RRR into consideration cause of emerging market in India but tell if not the market then what should they look apart from obvious things like director/actor/song or anything that relates to movie. There is thousands of high quality movie coming every year and they can't give Oscar to all of them. So criteria changes to something else.

After Bahubali he became popular throughout India coz of his sheer passion, risk, hardwork and dreaming something that no South Indian director of his generation dared to. Now he wants to gain fame in the Western World too and this RRR campaign could be the stepping stone. Yes. Indian films need these kind of OSCAR awards and show how great is our culture, food to the world and get highest appreciation and also to grow the Indian film business globally.

Indian movies do not need validation from Oscars and it is ridiculous how some people are going overboard about the award being given to RRR for its 'original music' and the Elephant Whisperer' a documentary. As for original music there are any number of Indian movies whose music was not only original but divine and magical. Mahal, Pyaasa, Mughal e Azam, Mere Mehboob, Mera Saya, Woh Kaun Thi, Pakizah, Kabhi Kabhi, Silsila, etc. The music of these movies and many more is outstanding in every sense of the word. In recent years, the music of films like Aashiqui-2 was also good. I have only named Hindi movies. Music of the movies of other languages is equally good. It seems that Oscar's organisers were tone deaf for all these years.

Its not just about the songs themselves. Oscars are American awards however they try to color it. Natu natu became a hit, not on its own, but bcs of the movie RRR and western attention it got by word of mouth. So the movie team capitalised on that publicity. We have had far better songs than this, but not a movie as grand and as appealing as RRR to the western audience. Remember majority of the jury is white people.

We are our worst enemies. Instead of celebrating, we are discussing about the oscar validation. No, we don't need oscar validation, we already got that from audience and the award is just a cherry on top, but that recognisation opens the biggest door possible in the world in terms of reach. Just like it happend to South Korea with parasite and Squid Game, it happend to India with RRR.
So instead of being a cynical, be happy that today more people know about our film industry, culture and people then yesterday. Just enjoy the show.

Naatu Naatu to westerners was fresh, new & the choreography elevated the song to a new level with 2 massive stars.
Why do these stupid questions like "do we need Oscars as validation?" After we won.
Just be happy we won & they gave us a chance to take Indian cinema globally.
Even the lyrics were written to show the raw nature of our dance & we don't need refined dance steps to be shown that is dance itself, when we can embrace our own dance style.

NOBODY said we need their validation, but getting the recognition sure does help. Go and tell this to the team that made RRR, and they'll laugh at you.
Maybe Bollywood should make a 1st world themed movie that is good enough to get nominated.

It is not a validation but a recognition which can be a prime motivator for filmmaker s for India to compete and learn from global films , making more competitive movies,to break from conventional movie making revolving on love story and item songs.also responsibility is on viewers to show love to best films and discard those which are not .we want Indian cinema to go global

@@shivam_nagar69 firstly who the h3ll is saying they want to learn about movies??? When you talk to me talk about what I am saying, not what others said. I don't take responsibility for what others say.
Secondly, yes, American films are considered global (at least for now). Unless you are living under a rock, don't you know how many fans around the world waited for the release of Avengers, Avatar or Star Wars movies? Pick any film from any other industry that was most awaited by the fans around the world. I dare you!
Thirdly, Oscars are American Awards, not global. They don't go around selecting films from every country. There's a category for best foreign film and that's it! However, Any film is considered for oscars if it is released in the US and has a successful run like RRR or Parasite. Films from other countries competing with American films here in the US and winning an award in the general category is a huge deal! Try to learn something before barking at others with your half knowledge.

Even the biggest blockbusters in India don't come anywhere close to grossing the kind of money that American movies make. You might not need the validation from an Oscar, but the kind of exposure that films get from being nominated and winning an Oscar will surely help not only that film, but many more like it, potentially earn more money in the future. At the end of the day, this is a business and money is always the bottom line. Don't forget that. Praise from your fellow countrymen is all well and good, but how is that going to help produce bigger and better quality content going forward? I have never seen a country who likes to bite off their nose to spite their own face like India.

Oscar is big because it’s the best award in Hollywood- it gives you recognition in a global platform . The reach is what the golden award gives you . All over the globe every film lover, workers and crew watch oscars . So that’s why Oscar is big . What are we suppose to trust Indian award who gives Ananya award lol. If Indian awards were given to the deserving talent then oscars will be ad on than the best thing to happen. Why do you think Indians mostly like national award. It’s fare . Western gives non western awards only to market themselves and asians are obsessed with west mostly .. power of money . The day every country person starts respecting and being fare to their own ppl , this westernisation will go on…
