    Using a leather strop is one of the best ways to hone your knife or axe to a razor edge. Using a strop regularly will prevent the need for frequent sharpening and will prolong the service life of your tools. There are two basic types of strops and it is important to choose the right strop based on the grind of your blade. Let's discuss what type of strop to use with different grinds.

    This is absolutely hands down the BEST demonstration and explanation of strops and blade grinds I've seen online. You are an outstanding teacher!

    Thank you very much matt. I tend to stay away from strops because it puts a micro bevel on my knife. Since I do a lot of wood working it unfortunately does not work for me. I just do 20 strokes on a 8000 grit stone. Have a wonderful week. - Josh

    Veggie tanned leather or tooling leather is the best leather to use. I don't know if using a strap is any better than using a block. I use a block set up, I siliconed a piece of leather( veggie tanned) to my flattening stone used to dress stones, on the flat side not used. Now it's dual purposed.

      Thank you Frank and I agree 100%! I am honored by each and every subscriber I have but it is always nice to see someone who you respect greatly taking the time to watch and comment on your channel! It also shows what a genuine person Lonnie is to take that time and make the effort to interact with a small channel like mine. It is most appreciated:)

      Black Hat Bushcraft The size of ones channel often times has very little to do with the persons knowledge. Mors Kochanski's channel is an example. He probably is one of the most knowledgeable people in the world today on bushcraft, survival and wilderness living. Yet Mors channel is still not very large. I enjoy learning and realize that we all learn from each other. Keep on keeping on and continue doing what you do.

    Matt, you're always very informative. I didn't see these strops on your Amazon influencer page. Can you post links to these 2?

      Thank you so much Paul! I appreciate your kind words! I appreciate you checking me out on Amazon as well. I will add two links in the description box. If you go to the Amazon page, check the category for Tool Sharpening and Honing. Both my paddle strop and barber strops are listed there. The paddle that I am using now is made by BUTZ. It is the best I have found. Thanks again! Take care.

    I have never used a strop before and don't have one. My question for you is, can I use and old belt, or do I need to buy a official strop. Thank you!

    • @blackhatbushcraft
      @blackhatbushcraft  4 роки тому +2

      Yes sir, as long as it is a leather belt, you can use the backside and hone with it. I have done this many times. Just be aware of the grind of your knife. If it is a Scandinavian grind, you may not want to hone it too much on the belt as it will convex it slightly over time. The paddle strop is the best tool really for Scandi grinds. In a pinch in the field though, it is a good way to improvise. Thank you for your time and interest!

    You do a great job with the information you provide and the way you present the facts. What you have relayed to viewers of your channel corresponds to my thoughts and beliefs. Could I ask one favour - when demonstrating sharpness, I realize shaving sharp is depicted by cutting arm hair, but could it be more safely shown by tilting a fingernail downward and resting just the weight of the blade on the nail. A suitably sharp knife will stay there, while a duller knife will slide off. Not a criticism here - just worried about the neophyte who tries that with a dull knife, gets frustrated, tries harder and ends up with a serious injury. One would think I was somehow familiar with this concept - not admitting anything mind you, just saying LOL

    Another great video. Where I find knife 🔪 the one you are using. I've tried to Pathfinders school store but they don't show any knives sheath-knives not even seen the one from Dave that talks about two different ones. If you can find the time to give me a lead on where to find a knife like you're using and a single wall metal water bottle 32 oz. I'd appreciate it. Gingdah 🚶💀

  • @lettingthebearout7528

    So confusing. I see more often than not to never strop a scandi. I wish I knew for sure. Are you saying the block strop won’t impact the blade geometry on the scandi. I know the strop always works on the convex but I’ve heard often the strop will screw up the scandi ??

    • @blackhatbushcraft
      @blackhatbushcraft  3 роки тому

      The purpose of the paddle/block strop is to maintain a straight bevel. It is for a scandi grind really. It will not work well with a convex. The belt strop is needed for convex to maintain the proper geometry. So scandi on the paddle/block and convex on the belt is absolutely the correct way to use these. I hope that helps.
