These two had great chemistry for the few films we saw them in. They could have been really happy together. This scene was adorable, but also kind of sad in retrospect because they never got to actually get married in real life.
Definitely sad that they never married, bearing in mind that Jean’s kidney problems (terminal in the 1930s) meant that the marriage would not have been a long one. He gave her a star sapphire ring in late 1936 which she apparently referred to as her un-engagement ring!
He changed after Harlow’s death. Opted for a quieter life and never discussed Harlow by all accounts. He may have felt guilty for the unhappiness he caused Jean in not marrying her, something he knew she desperately wanted.
@@Canadiana71 To Powell's credit, he did take it seriously once he realised how ill Jean was. Nobody thought Jean's final illness was particularly serious at the start and she had a track record of similar illness from which she had always recovered. My own suspicion is that Jean was still blighted by the infection she picked up when her wisdom teeth were extracted a few months before (in March 1936). This infection may have knocked out what limited remaining function she had in her kidneys, leading to the kidney failure which killed her a few months later in June. The dental extraction was a foolhardy procedure in that all of her wisdom teeth were removed in one go under general anaesthetic. By all accounts, Jean's heart stopped at one point. This is indicative of how run down she must have been at the time. I don't think Jean had recovered from the influenza she picked up at the start of 1936 when she travelled to Washington DC to meet President Roosevelt. Jean's heavy drinking at this point may also have played its part in depressing her immune system and kidney function. I think a properly researched medical investigation into Jean Harlow's death is probably long overdue.

That was Louis Calhern in The Asphalt Jungle. Powell and Monroe were in How to Marry a Millionaire together. She thought a lot of him. He was very kind to her.
Did her father die when she was young because it seemed all her marriages/relationships were with men 20 years older than her.. Like she was looking for a father figure.
no, her father didn't die, in fact he lived way into the 1960's, years after she died. However, her mother and father did divorce when she was young, so she probably always missed having a father figure around the house to look up to.
Her Father lived until he was in his 90s - he died in the 1970s, she was 16 when she married her first husband who was 20, after him it seemed like she went for the older men
Her mother kept her from seeing her dad. Later when she was an adult, she had to meet her dad in secret, is what I read. Her mom was too intrusive in her life in several ways.
William Powell was a very good actor in his day even today I love watching his movies.

I can't seem to find any interviews with Powell whatsoever. Did he decline them after Jean's death?
