Kims dad was a huge movie buff to the point that he kidnapped a movie director and his wife to make movies for him.
Now seeing things like this come out of N.korea makes me believe they do this because military, fighting, spy movies have alot of over the top feats of physical strength, fighting moves, combat skills and what not.
Think of it as Kim sees his military a lot like the movie Universal soldier with Jean Claude Van Damme.
Just my thoughts on why Nkorea, China, and others are known for displays of military forces like this.

The reason is simple, there so programed to do ANYTHING there told or they'll be killed, that they literally can not function on their own or in a think fast situation. Basically like fighting a robot. Sure long as the orders are clear, perfect, and nothing outside the box happens there good, but cut them off from command, or put them in a common combat scenio where there's chaos they're screwed. Don't believe me, research and study Japan against Americans during WW2. It's exactly why the Japanese lose so bad, and why there American educated general knew ahead of time they would lose in the long run. The sheto "spelling" style of discipline was just to much. He was 5'6" and a body builder. Pretty short "big" little dude. Huge cut up arms, could bench an unGodly amount of weight. But none of that mattered when it came to standards. He got a waiver from the post commander because of his body builder physique. And other soldiers actually supported him on that. They vouched for him. The demonstration that you said you couldn't understand is much the same as the sweeping the water off of the flight line. It's to demonstrate the discipline of the troops and to a lesser degree their strength physical and mental. Breaking bricks resisting damage from the hammers laying on spikes and having a brick broken on your stomach all require a level of discipline that is rare even among martial artists.

During basic training in the Austrian army they warned us about posting anything, especially with the weapons. One of the officers showed us a video where during the basic training for our elite unit the "Jagdkommando" a recruit was called out for posting a cringe shirtless pic, half in uniform and posing with our combat knife, acting all cool. They printed out a whole page with his posts, 5 am in the morning outside during exercises, asking him if he is really as cool as he posted. He crumbled immediately and didn't make it through the first exercises.
