    I completely understand your struggle with always having to be ‘productive’. That’s literally my entire life. What people like us need to learn is that sometimes the most productive thing to do IS rest. Often times meeting up with that old friend WILL bring you more value than say researching your craft for another 2 hours. It’s a hard lesson to learn, as someone who’s definitely a very determined and strong willed perfectionist, and it’s something I’m still struggling with daily. But thank you so much for sharing this, it definitely helps someone like me feel less alone!! ❤❤ Thank you for always being an inspiration~ 🙂🙂🙂

    I can relate to have the feeling that you constantly have to be productive. Even when I am doing my hobby, it has a goal. Can really be frustrating especially when you're tired..😅

    🙂 I can totally relate to the feeling of needing to do something. I had the same problem in the past. I am 34 now and I kind of slowly outgrew it with time, because it did just not work for me and my health in the long run and also I got more established in my life and there was less and less future to get ready for (if that makes sense) and more and more that I had already achieved.
    Also, I stepped away from some of the goals I might have had when I was younger in order to be able to be more and do less.
    Now I spend a few hours after work just relaxing. At the moment, I watch youtube several times a week that. I especially enjoy things that are not related to my life and my future (e.g. I will never be a ballet dancer... I am a doctor, by the way, that always wanted to be a dancer...😉).
    I watch just to relax and enjoy and see something unexpected and colourful. But a few years ago, this would have been impossible and felt like a waste of time. Now I see it more as a way to recharch my battery.
    You´re still very young, I am sure, you will learn how to rest with time! And with age, some factors come into play that make it easier to be able to rest, I promise.

      Thank you for putting my mind at ease that as time goes on this will mellow out. I already feel like it has done to a certain degree from when I was younger. I think accepting that you only have so much capacity as an adult who is trying to survive (cook, clean, eat, sleep, work, have a social life, and pay all the bills) all things that as a teenager were not so pressing or zapping any of your energy 🙌🏻

    I completely relate to this feeling! Recently, my perspective has changed a lot due to my mental health. The past year and a half have been some of my worst moments mentally, and at times it makes me unable to work or even get out of bed. I feel so guilty about my life path, especially for dropping out of university and having to start over because of my mental health.
    On the flip side, I have learned to be a lot more forgiving to those around me as well as myself. Sometimes what we see as “lazy” is inevitable and so necessary! Not that I wish for anyone to go through my stuff to get to a conclusion like this lol but I think putting things in perspective will really help as well as maybe trying therapy or counseling?
    Wishing you all the best! I hope you know that you are such an incredible and hardworking human, and that you will still be that way even if you take days off ❤ treat yourself like you would treat a friend who told you she was having the same thoughts!

      It’s important to take care of ourselves mentally. I’m just sometimes unsure what the best ways are to take care of myself. I’m still looking for my outlet outside of my profession.

    I highly recommend meditation. I know prayer has similarities, but the point/process of meditation is to quiet the mind. It takes practice to get there, but once you do, you can reach out to that in moments when you catch yourself thinking too much, or stressing yourself out with the shoulds and ought-to's. 🙂

    Couldn’t relate more with everything you said Hannah ! I’m grateful to have such a burning desire to reach my full potential, but this good energy is sometimes transformed into an overwhelming state where the mind seems to be continuously spinning 😵‍💫
    It’s still a work in progress, but I started doing cardiac coherence exercises for 5 minutes before breakfast a few days ago and it has really been a game changer. It might help you as well ! And it has a lot of scientifically proven health benefits as well

    I totally get it! I think particularly people who are/were athletes to a high level have this mentality of constantly needing to push themselves, even through tiredness/exhaustion. Its what makes you a successful athlete imo.
    The problem is trying to get out of that mentality when you've done it all your life, as it definitely stays with you. It's super important to look after your mental wellbeing though, as well as physically, so having some downtime reading a fiction book you can lose yourself in, or doing arts/crafts or anything like that, can be hugely beneficial. It helps stop burnout. Maybe try looking at it as looking after your body mentally, rather than not doing something "productive". It's still productive for your wellbeing. Just in a different way! I know i struggled a lot with that as an ex athlete, and still do now, even in my 50's 😅. It's hard to lose that mindset.

      Certainly it’s an athletes mindset. I’m caught between trying to fight it and embrace it. As it’s important to be disciplined but at the same time we all need to breathe now and then between the craziness of life. I’m certainly getting better at finding the balance but I’m not quite there yet 😅

      I totally agree. I'm not an athlete, but when I've been feeling burned out about my job, finding hobbies and crafts helped a ton! On the days I felt especially unmotivated and overwhelmed, I would knit and crochet in between my work sessions.

    As a professional French artist (still in formation though) in the dance, acting and singing/music area, I relate so much on what you’re going through. My teachers always told me to repress my energy since I was a kid otherwise I go too far to the point I got seriously injured (whether it be physically or mentally) I literally can’t stop working. I thought I could work better on it growing up (I’m nearly 20). But now that work full time in my dream area (working on stage) I realize that it tends to be even worse because I am even more passionate about what I am doing and need to achieve my dreams to really become a professional artist and do that for a living (I am still in pro training). My school’s also famous worldwide and it adds more pressure when I see how amazing people are here. Feeling like I never work hard enough even if at that point I can’t say it’s true. This is a real struggle. Resting is a huge struggle and I feel you a lot on that. Your words describe perfectly what it’s like honestly. Thank you, I needed that reminder to me less harsh on myself ❤ Take care of you ❤

    I haven't danced for 4 years and I still struggle with this . I won't go out with people , and can't enjoy anything that isn't associated with ballet because I feel guilty about wasting time . Yet.... I'm not even dancing anymore . It's very hard . I think it's the identity of a dancer to always need progression and strive for the impossible never-ending ideal of perfectionism. I don't think it ever goes away .

      Wow.. that’s so interesting to hear that this thing doesn’t just stop even beyond the dancing part of your career. It makes me realise how important it is to understand and work on this aspect of my life now so it will be easier later 😅

    Valuable insight presented here. Maybe a part of our internet culture, go, go, go all the time, never shutting down, etc. I am much older than you but i can identify. Thanks for reminding me that i need to allow myself to slow down and enjoy things. You are a lovely dancer and a smart woman as well.

    There was a Zen buddhist guy who once said to me that people are always thinking of what's at the end of going through a door, but never are present at the act of going through the door. It's good to look ahead, but sometimes trying to be present in a moment is good exercise. Prioritizing is also something we all need to learn to do. By the way, your eyes match your sweater perfectly. (See? Stop to notice the little things). Also, I was amazed at how casually people dress for your church. I could never do that going to our synagogue. Wish I could....

    I relate very much to the 'need to be productive'. For me just thinking of my day in percentages really helps - I know that I need to have at least 5% percent of my waking hours be rest and that obviously gets modified by how hard on my mind/body what I'm doing is - if I'm just doing manual tasks that would compensate for some of my 'off-time' (because they just don't tire my mind as much).
    I also understand the 'if I don't do it now, it will never get done' mentality - for that I have an app that I do all my to-do lists with reminder and deadlines and if I remember anything new while resting, I have committed myself to adding the task to the list and continuing to lounge 😆
    I don't know if it's a good olution, but it definitely helps me

    We all need play! And play is when you do something without purpose, just because it's fun. Giving myself permission to play is something I struggle with too (especially when I became a mom).

    I love to use a heating pad and relax whatever muscles are bothering me and then I’m able to usually rest pretty well.

    This may sound ridiculous, but doing a jigsaw really empties the mind. Rest is so important in ballet, sometimes less is more.

      @@HannahMartinRG Yes! It’s so important to slow down at different points of the day to be present in the moment, just like closing your eyes and breathing or partaking in a spiritual practice. I suffer from a racing brain that thinks too much. I make myself so anxious sometimes., and I also find reading is a form of meditation. Two books that changed my life too were ‘The Tethered Soul’ and ‘The Power of Now’. I highly recommend them 🌸🌼

    Such a challenging lesson! Taken me a while to learn and still not perfect at it! Something I love when I’m super busy and having a hard time balancing rest is putting my feet up a wall esp before bed. The weight of the legs on the hips sends a signal to your brain to lower cortisol and helps calm you down! 2 min is really helpful! 😍

    I've actually recently come full-circle with this one: Yes, I'll rest when I get really tired but I really do enjoy being productive most of the time. I dont worry about doing versus being any more. And it has the added bonus that you really can get a lot of things done-- very satisfying. As long as you're happy and healthy and not burning out, then just be yourself, whatever that means to you. I feel like I wouldn't be me if I wasn't running round "getting things done" a lot of the time. Yes, the constant mental to- do list can get a bit overwhelming at times, but honestly, I'd rather have that and be true to myself. You are a great inspiration to many and a big part of that is your motivation and positivity. You are perfect just as you are!

      I definitely find myself close to the burnt out cycle then I’d like to be sometimes, so I am certainly trying to find ways to be as productive but continue to take care of my physical and mental well-being. It’s coming but I’m still figuring it out 🤪

    🙂 Nothing worse than being physically exhausted but mentally awake. Do what you can one day at a time and that is enough. Plodding through a list is ok as life is ongoing and that’s ok x

    Resting is an investment in Future Hannah's health!
    Quick fix solution: tell yourself that your challenge is to rest!
    
    Some people try meditation. I find I get distracted very easily but if one sets a timer for 30 seconds at a time, do 4 reps, and then try to increase it from there, it gets easier with constant repetition. You already have your daily activity of reading your Bible studies every morning. Maybe you could try meditating while you stretch?
    Most overachievers have the same problem with rest. This is not abnormal. It's best to accept that this is just the personality type one was born with. That there are positives and negatives and one just has to learn to maximize the positives. Eliminate feelings of guilt, frustration, shame.
    Ask yourself whether you would scold a friend for having this type of personality. Probably not, right? So there is no need to scold oneself.
    Is there an actual fear of resting? If so, it would probably help to get to the root of it.
    I know you have worked on socializing more and that's great! This is one of the most important things humans do as we are a social species. Socializing allows us to practice conversational skills as well as learning to read other people's reactions, emotions and body language. One often learns things from talking with other people that one would never have found out otherwise.
    That brings me to "wasting time" by reading or consuming media that is not immediately relevant in one's life. One never knows when the most obscure bits of knowledge that are hanging around one's brain will come in handy.

      I totally agree that I waste more time on social media as sometimes I mix the lines of the work I do on here and passing time. I check my Instagram more then I would like to admit. It’s very addicting. I think if I controlled this more I would have less clutter in my brain to deal with.

    Here's advice that worked for me and changed my life. I listened to a conservative talk-show host here in America 22 years ago. He talked on the phone to a caller and told her that everyone has some kind of God-given talent. He then said to succeed in life you need to match your favorite skill with a natural passion. Put the two together and the success will come naturally. He was right. I put both together and within 13 months I owned my own business, which has provided for me financially full time for 20 years. Also, since I put those two pieces together I was able to give up the anxiety that I'm not doing enough, or that I'm not doing the right thing. I do what I want to do regardless of other people's opinions, as long as it's within God's will of loving him and others. Granted, some of that autonomy comes from age and maturity. But it also comes from following the Lord and putting together a natural passion with a favorite skill. Just my two cents, or two pounds. :) All the best and God bless.

    Hey! I was awake through the night and there is a “Hannah video” yay! Not to put on more pressure though 🤦‍♀️.
    I was thinking about rest….
    1. Yes I absolutely feel this way even though I barely do anything overall. (Chronic illness forced someone to stop but it doesn’t stop the emotions.)
    2. The biggest point…. “And he looked at everything he had done and said it was GOOD and that was the sixth day. So t he seventh day HE RESTED.” Genesis 1-2. God, stopped! He did his evaluation on day six (which is Friday) and saw it was good and RESTED the next day! Day seven (Saturday!). We celebrate and have church (typically) on a Sunday and this varies as some people see this as a day of rest but I don’t find church restful but I do find it good! But tradition is that we have church at the start of the week to START the week well. Regardless, God rested. Realising this and the idea of a sabbath day absolutely changed my perspective.
    3. So as I mentioned I’m pretty sick. I work when I can (hasn’t been for awhile), I do what I can, manage what I can and interact etc as I can. But on Saturdays (which work best for me but not everyone) I have a sabbath day. I don’t automatically cut myself off from the world but in the last 5 years I have had visitors or planned something on a Saturday three times. That’s it. I will still text, call people etc but if it may require an obligation, then I’m pre-booked.
    Now, even if I’ve had a week where I haven’t cleaned my house, made my bed, competed the admin tasks or even had a regular shower, so nothing essentially…. Come that Saturday morning I am now able to actually rest because there is nothing I HAVE to do because it’s “rest day”. If I think I SHOULD call someone or I SHOULD plan my week, I stop myself. If I WANT to do something (read, watch a movie, play a game, have an extra long shower etc) then I will…but I don’t HAVE to do it. And yes it takes awhile but the fact that it’s scheduled time off? It helps immensely even when I’ve done nothing all week and especially when the week has been busy. Even God rested.
    4. The other thing I’ve begun doing on a practical level…. I always keep a way of jotting notes down close by so my mind isn’t trying to remember everything…. But I don’t act on everything immediately. However, I’ve also started with small post it notes with what I want to accomplish that day on it. Then I can scribble it out (so satisfying) and crumple it and throw it out when it’s done. I use post it notes because they stick right where my eyes will see them so again, I’m not trying to keep it all in my mind. This ALSO helps me rest. But I doubt organisation is your issue….. it’s pressure.
    So I go back to…. God rested. 1/7th of the week was exclusively for rest. He is a loving JOYFUL God! We’re not here to destroy ourselves like that, serve? Yes. Love? Yes. Stomp out sin our lives? Yes. But to always work and be miserable? No. Love and joy and reflecting the glory of God.
    Praying and you can do this! (PS our society and the Bible don’t mix, so while working is biblical being super busy 100% is not.) xo

      Thank you so much for sharing all of these insights. It’s truly inspiring to hear your story and experience of controlling this sense of productivity that seems to chase us!
      I write lists all the time, but often my mistake is that I put to many things on the list so it never actually gets completed and therefore feeds the machine of not feeling like I’m doing enough or getting enough done. I think perhaps I need to be more realistic on what can be done within a 24 hour period 😂😂

    I totally get it. Actually the reason I’m a professional ballerina trained in Moscow is because I was a hyper active/flexible child who was climbing everywhere like a little monkey 🙈. My parents knew I needed to have an outlet for so much energy. My brain 🧠 never stops either. I’m always studying/investigating/learning… I was just diagnosed with ADHD , which made everything make sense. I’m like a sponge 🧽

    Have you ever done a video on what you eat in a day? Several things you eat look yummy and healthy and I'd love to see some recipes!

      I have considered it but I like to keep my diet overall a bit more private as many opinions are offered when I share what I eat 🙈 sometimes the mixed messages can be confusing so I tend to just post a few meals on the vlogs
