  • This is a close look and honest review of DovEggs Hearts & Arrows vs. Crown Arrows vs. Astro cuts as well as a comparison of their DEF and GHI color ranges. More info below 👇:
GHI = Is “Near Colorless” and is said to have some “warmth” to the stone. This means that it is not as bright clear white as DEF, but instead has a tiny bit of extremely subtle, almost undetectable, very very slight yellowy undertones. GHI is closer to the color range that you would most likely find in a department store diamond (one that isn’t flawless / colorless, that is).
DEF = Is “Colorless” and is more cool, and is said to be more bright white / clear. This is closer to the color range that a flawless, colorless diamond would be. There will not be any tints or colors to these stones.
Now, here is my opinion / things to consider, feel free to take it or leave it. 😊
    1. Both are amazingly sparkly. Both are great options!
    2. If you are on a tight budget, like I am, GHI is a wonderful option. It is still extremely white, and honestly DovEggs often picks F or G stones when you choose GHI, so there should not be any obvious tint / yellow to the stones. All of my pieces (other than my colorful tinted stones) are GHI, and I do not notice any yellow in them. It would bother me personally if I did. Although I once thought I would prefer DEF, I have changed my mind.
    3. If you have an unlimited budget, or a more flexible one, DEF is supposed to look, as mentioned, more top of the line and flawless. To some people its coolness is off putting, but to others, the colorlessness looks more high quality. 🤔
    4. Sometimes the color of the gold of the setting can reflect into the stones. If you are choosing yellow or rose gold, and not white gold, I would personally especially suggest a GHI stone, since the yellowy tones of the gold setting might reflect in the DEF stones anyways. But again, that’s just me personally. 😉
So, long story short, it all comes down to your budget and personal preference. Would you prefer a warmer stone, or a cooler one; a more colorless / flawless style, or one that looks more like what you might find in a department store / non-flawless stone; and finally, is your budget tight or flexible?
Here a a few links below too of examples of GHI vs DEF that DovEggs has posted previously in the DovEggs Facebook group.

    On to the cuts!
Hearts & Arrows cut is an ideal cut used exhibit intense sparkle. When done correctly, 8 symmetrical hearts when face down and 8 arrows when face up can be seen in the gem.

Crown Arrows is the top 10% of DovEggs Jewelry’s Hearts and Arrows stones, and is hand picked for the best quality / cut. It’s said to have the most brilliance for this reason. 🙂

I just ordered a one carat round Astro solitaire and I hope I love it! I was torn between that and the Nova - I’m a little nervous. Thanks so much for sharing this video! I searched the group and the consensus seems to be Astro rounds are not as nice. Fingers crossed!

Hey! I’m glad I could help! And I love my Astro! It’s beautiful, and looks very much like my mother’s diamond engagement ring. I hope you love yours too! ☺️

Could you post a video with detailed comparison between H&A and C&A?

Hey! Absolutely! 😁👍 I will plan to order a CA round stone soon so I can make a more thorough comparison (I currently have CA in cushion only, and have round in every cut except CA. So in order to make a thorough comparison of all 4 in the round cut, I need that CA stone). 😉 Once I have it I’ll make a video for you / everyone.

Do you know the name of the ring with the H & A stone? (It looks like a 1.5 ct center with four equally sized smaller stones, two on either side) Thanks :)

Hey! Good to know!! Thanks for sharing. 🙂👍
It looks like my most recent event ring came in a blue box (though I did upgrade it to gold, so that might be why). 🤔

Honestly I can't even tell the difference between the Def and the GHI color through the video. They both look the same in color in my opinion unless you inspected side by side in person. Otherwise it is very difficult to tell the difference.

It's the cut that is causing that

DEF? Is it a D... E... or F in color? Sounds like you've started your own Color Grading System. Please explain it to us.

I’d be happy to try explain further! DovEggs offers “GHI” and “DEF” as choices for their stones. If you select the “DEF” option, then it is going to be completely colorless. If you choose the “GHI” option then it is going to be nearly colorless (and have a bit of warmth to it). DovEggs uses G or F stones for their GHI color range option. For their DEF color range they use D stones. So in short, the stone that is “DEF” in the video is actually a D, or colorless, stone. 🙂
