    My rule of thumb for those three screens is:
    Inputs: here you can address shortcomings of the inputs/handset (expo, dual rate etc.).
    Mixers: here you do your actual programming/model functions.
    Outputs: here you can address shortcomings of the model - servos mounted the wrong way round, midpoints being off etc.

    Excellent video as usual. Simple and easy to follow. I was a JR Radio user back in the day and when I started flying helis again 18 months ago I went to OpenTX. It was a bit daunting at first but these days I can set up a modern heli in about 30 minutes. The concept of the three areas, input, mix and output is logical if you think about it.

    Been using opentx since the x9d came out and the first model took me 3 days to figure out. I have been following and using your videos for specific setups and thank you for the time and effort you have given to the community. Without you tubers l believe Open/Edge TX would not have been successful. Certainly Frsky did not provide enough support for users!. The only thing I see the need for is a script which would do a simple 4-5 servo setup with rates and expo being able to be inputted in the same style as the new model setup just more comprehensive which would help new non computer literate new users get started. So thanks again for you considerable help in getting people using the open source programs. Cheers. Have a Merry Christmas and a Good New Year. All the best for 2023 👍

    I have been looking for this type of video!!! I can't wait to watch it. I just switched to a TX16 and even though I have never picked up a manual or watched a video for any transmitter in the last 30 years this one has me overwhelmed.

      I would love a series that walked menu by menu and gave a overview of each function. Not a deep dive persay but build a framework to build on. Most videos are based on teaching a single function, but without a solid framework I find myself parroting the settings over to my radio without a firm grasp of what I am doing, or how to apply it to other use cases.

    I have a differential thrust watercraft and use the inputs and mixers in conjunction with switches to either limit throttle position or gain in different modes, limiting or eliminating reverse in some of the modes. Switches can also be used in conjunction with servo settings to lock them in place, e.g., maintaining a camera angle without the worry about inadvertently bumping things on the control. It does get confusing as to where and when one might use functions, between the mixer and the inputs in particular, especially when essentially programming compound functions. Sometimes I wish "they" (i.e., the brilliant Edge/Open TX folks) would just give us AND and OR gates on the control configuration to do what we wanted there as it would be a lot more intuitive. The slopes on the "curve" aren't always intuitive, especially when/if used with switches.

    Thank you Lee. I intended to come to Open TX but when I got my Tx16S and switched it on I found EdgeTx! Your videos have been extremely useful. I came from Multiplex and soon realised that the icons at the top of the screen corresponded to the markings for the buttons on my Royal Pro Tx. That made things a bit easier for me to understand but I must say that the Edge Tx is actually easier for me to program than my Multiplex gear. However, I have yet to try to programme a 4 servo wing,
    but I feel that it may be easier. So far my Tx is just used for indoor helis and I am finding the flexibility of Edge a great help in getting my helis to fly in a controlled way. Especially the flexibility given by the curves. It really is useful to understand how powerful these can be.

    Great explanation. I’ve gone from old school futaba to edge tx about a year ago. I understand it better now, and yes you can literally set anything up. for me, the very basic fixed wing sport pilot, the redundancy is really annoying. I think there could be a mode for fixed wing where you get all of that on one screen, and done. My old super 7 can v tail or elevon mix, and it’s literally the easiest thing to do in the world. The Lua script seems to help quite a bit for setup of a basic model for us primitive creatures.
    Edge tx is sometimes too powerful for its own good lol.

    Fantastic video, Lee! Thanks!!! 😃
    I use the outputs to set the limits of the gimbals, so the FC receives exactly between 1000 and 2000.
    Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

  • @KernsJW
    @KernsJW Рік тому

    The why- I believe it is old functionality left over from before FCs or before they were as powerful as they are now. They are also still there for when you don't want to use an FC. They also come in handy for custom input and outputs.
    Good video, I haven't thought about those screens causing confusion, but I have been using it for many years

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  Рік тому

      That's right. If you use a flight controller then most of the complex stuff on the radio is not used as all of that is configured in the flight controller (rates, expo, mixing etc.). It is only for things like gliders and non FC controlled models that I get into that stuff now.. Happy flying!

    Hi Lee. Great video and information about how mixing works. I only had one plane that I was using mixing, I had a 1/3 scale Extra 300L, and I used mixing for knife-edge flying. I could add a little bit of elevator to the maneuver so I could fly straight without much input. Thanks again for the video and information.

    I started with a Spektrum radio, and I never did understand it fully. Everything always seemed to have a bit of mystery to whether or not my attempts at configuring would work or not. I was ok with it, but being an open source developer, supporter, and believer in open source software, I didn't hesitate for a second on switching to OpenTx. Althought the three screens being so similar was a bit of a confuser, and of course it was a new interface (thankfully on a real screen and not on the radio itself,) overall I found OpenTx to be a lot more intuitive than the Spektrum. As soon as I started using it, everything was making sense.

    Be warned! If you change the servo direction in the input tab, the trim will be opposite. I confettied a 30 year old Big Stick this way! I took off and was over some trees when I bumped the trim for more up. It didn't seem to do anything, so I just held the trim for more up trim and it went right into the trees. Poof! It was a new Taranis X9D radio, 10 years ago, but it had openTX.

Anyway, the reason I reached out to you is that I'm trying to setup that plane I mentioned before. Here is where I'm confused. My input screen shows RUD, ELE, THRO, and AIL. In that order. My mix screen shows AIL, ELE, and THRO in that order. My output screen shows CHAN 1 as Ail, Cha2 as ELE, and Chan 3 as Thro. When I plug in any of those wires to the correct pin, nothing happens. If I put the aileron wire into channel 1, nothing happens. Thro in Channel 3 nothing happens. I'll watch the video you sent. Thanks for your time.
