A few days ago I upgraded from 2.5 to 2.6 and one thing I noticed is that my screen brightness no longer went all the way down to black. I enquired about this on the ETX discord and found out that this was an intentional change to prevent someone from getting locked-out of their radio because you couldn't see the screen. Just thought I'd share.

Moving a lot of my planes from my SX20 to my TX-16S Max. Yeah, there's quite a learning curve, but once you get used to it, it seems a lot more intuitive than the DX20. And the touch screen sure speeds things up.
You can implement a special function using a logical function (XOR SF DOWN) in a model to achieve turning screen off if you have the arm down and disarm up - you posed this question in your video. Hope this helps others. Thanks for vid

Just a heads up, I'm using Edge TX 2.6.0 on the Radiomaster TX16s and it all works except for turning the screen backlighting completely off. They made a change in 2.6.0 so that radios with a color LCD will only go to a certain minimum brightness and not completely off. Even the OFF option in the Mode options has been removed. You could just use the first global function and turn down the brightness all the way down in radio setup. This will have the desired effect of "turning off" the screen while armed. It also works with 3 position switches.
It might be possible actually. It could be done by measuring the change in DbM when you are near the transmitter. Sorta like those RF body proximity detectors.
This was the first thing I did, I put the brightness on a pot and then setup the screen so it’s locked from touch and goes dim while armed. I also have an override switch so I can use the screen while armed if needed. It’s easy to overdo it with all the functions.
Yup, one of the first things I set up on my new TX16s with EdgeTX. It's great to be able to tweak the brightness with a knob depending on the light conditions, and to turn it off completely when flying.
Thanks for this. T-lite has no momentary switch so set it to my turtle mode switch off. Also had to make 2 globals since I use a 3 way for disarm/angle arm/acro arm
I'm using the SA arm switch and it's all working fine using the momentary switch accept, it's not turning right off when armed? Still turning all the way down though so a big upgrade for this guy. I did the volume too, who knew setting up two nobs could be so satisfying, lol.

To use something more "static" than a momentary switch. In Harware, we can set an additional switch, e.g. SI as a toggle, and then we will no longer have a physical switch. Only set the SI which will always have a constant value. Well, unless someone modified the radio by adding additional buttons.

So far no problems running out of battery. Using a 1W module I get 2-3 days. With the 4 in 1 more like 2 weeks. But I could see this being useful for siming in a dark room.
My biggest gripe with the TX16S is that the screen goes dark when you wear polarized sunglasses as it's a polarized screen. If they'd just rotate the screen 90 degrees that problem would go away. Sadly, I have been unable to find sunglasses (particularly ones that fit over prescription glasses) that have a compatible (or no) polarization, and almost all good sunglasses these days are polarized. It's really annoying. Do I want to be able to see my airplane? or see my screen? It shouldn't be a dilemma like that.
Love my TX16S hate you need 17 degrees to operate it I've been trying to turn up my volume since I owned it lol guess it will stay on low volume cause I'm not smart enough to figure it out much less the brightness lol
dont' forget to lock your touch screen with a switch, and put volume on a nob as well. But unfortunately the brightness doesn't go completely off to 0 anymore with the newest EdgeTX update. So that makes me sad.
I've always thought those big screens benefit fixed wing but not really anything else. Helicopters and fpv their isn't much looking at the transmitter while your flying. Black and white 2d text lcd is good enough for me. Even on a heli with telemetry I would use a vibrating alarm to let me know when the voltage was low and it was time to land before I dropped out of the sky.
Through trial and error i THINK i have a solution for where you pull to arm and push to disarm. Did this on my FrSky XLite. I have the radio backlight setting set to ON. Reading from left to right as I dont know what the field names are off the top of my head. In Global Functions: I have the first field set to my arm switch down (disarm positon), second field backlight. The third field is set to a knob/pot, in my case S2 (right shoulder dial). Checkbox enabled. Now. In the disarm mode. Backlight is ON. Dial does nothing. When armed, dial controls brightness. I just keep the knob at zero but it lets me dial up the brightness to peek at the screen if need be while armed.
Hello, I have the version of Edge TX 2.7.1 and there is no mode off and the selection Backlight (radio setup), using the Poti S1 in the GF menu is functional but the screen cannot be completely darkened. In order to save as much power as possible, I can only select the option (Both) in the menu (Radio Setup / Backlight) and force the backlight to turn off, but as soon as even one stick or other component is moved, the screen switches on again with the preset potentiometer value . It would sometimes be really helpful to know which firmware is requirement in case of any problems, I only read after a while that with the version 2.6.1 the complete darkening is no longer possible. A reference to this should actually be given along with a current video like this one.

Joshua, can you help me how to program a 3 position switch to work as On and Off for wheel retracts that will disregard the middle postion of the switch?
On my Boxer the knob has that potentiometer jittering so the screen starts flashing randomly if the knob is between the potentiometer positions. When I tried to use it for volume control every time I restart - the knob has different range of adjustment.
My guess is that when you calibrated the sticks, you didn't calibrate the pots. You have to calibrate all analog inputs including the 6-position button.

Followed your video, I'm on edgeTX 2.6 on the TX16S. Strange thing in my case can't alter the timeout of the screen in on mode and in other modes can't get it to 0. Also when setting up the knob It's kinda working but can't get the screen turned down completely to black
I commented directly but after your comment, they made a change in 2.6 so that the screen can't go bellow a minimum brightness only for controllers with a color LCD.
I found that if I temporarily set Logical Switch 64 to be active and assign the global function to turn off the backlight.... then delete the L64 switch from my model it will then behave properly..... it's a bit of a hack but it doesn't tie any additional physical switches and I don't think I will be using all 64 logical switches.
Joshua, thanks for all your great work, I have a Jumper T18 and it does not give me the option to add in a special function as you have shown. I can not add a switch to the Backlight function. I have the latest firmware, any idea's would be greatly appreciated.
@@SmudgeFPV You know I stand corrected, it looks to be 100% dark but your right, I can see (only in bright light) a few of the white menus. When on the home screen I see nothing. I would say it's not 10% but much lower than that, maybe 3% if that. I wonder if this can be fixed in future releases although for me, I can't even see it so looks good to me LOL.
I have a 2 month old TX16S... my Global Functions page looks different than yours... after ON and Backlight actions, it looked like you pressed the Roller switch while your cursor was on "Trainer" ?? so weird for the life of me i can't get my screen to shut off it dims all the way down after setting it up with the exact settings but not off unless i set the setting to BOTH with a 5s timeout. I did notice that i can't make that 0s no matter how hard i try it only goes from 5s - 600s. but as soon as I touch a switch it turns back on
I just set this up on edge tx 2.6.0. I used S1 as you showed, but turning the knob all the way down doesn't turn the screen all the way off. I calibrated all the knobs as well as the sticks after flashing 2.6.0. Just in case I tried it with S2 and also the left slider. All give the same results, all the way down makes the screen dim but not off. Do you have any suggestions on where I may be going wrong? I'm new to FPV and your channel has been so helpful, thank you!
Very nice (though I'm wondering about the situation where a programming goof disables the backlight, preventing viewing the display to fix it - maybe it's still legible with the backlight off?)
With 2.6 you can not switch the display on brightness to be off and the timeout for automatic off is at least 5 seconds to prevent this from happening.
@@malte9999 is this why I can't get the screen to turn off when I arm like this video? I mean, it works but it doesn't turn off completely.. Just dims when I arm. Not really useful if I can't turn the screen off completely. I did notice once I updated to 2.6 it didn't turn off completely with the S2 knob anymore
Hey Joshua. I think I may send my TX16s to the TV show Unsolved Mysteries. For several months after going from Opentx to Edge TX, I have had a touch screen. Suddenly it's gone. Special functions has a choice "no touch". I never selected it. Why is it even a choice? I upgraded to Edgetx 2.9.3 (providence) hoping it would restore touch screen, but it didn't. Is there a way you know of to restore touch screen ?
My tx16s controller doesn't turn on when connected to the pc for sim practice. I have to disconnect it and turn in on then reconnected again, can any body give me a hand or point me in the right direction. PLEASE...??
Ok so just set mine up and it only works for half the switch if you get what I mean brightness won't go all way down to screen off will go so far then if you turn it back up again it uses half the switch to full brightness other half is dead 🥴
You could also use the 6 position switch for the second global function the first one is also '0' and selected on startup. Who uses these ugly things anyways, right ;-)
I have made sure to follow the steps exactly(edge tx 2.7.1).. issue# 1 my radio wont allow me to select 0s for the backlight timer and issue#2 is that my radio does what yours is doing except it just dims the screen instead of shutting off. Is there anything I'm missing here?
Hello Joshua, is there as way to do this Globally if using a sticky arming switch. I place sw SD- and toggle the momentary SHup for .5sec and It activates Aux1 and moving SD to either other up or dn will disarm for quads.I use the SDdn sw as a throttle cut for my planes. Is there away to Globally work with a logical sticky ARMING for this or will this have to go into the functions for all my quads.
This is awesome. For some reason, when I set this up, my brightness does not turn all the way off when the knob is in its low setting. Is there a reason for this? I was in EDGETX 2.6

Hi I followed everything on here. However my screen doesn't go completely off or to maximum brightness. I am using s1 rotary control. Edgetx 2.10.2. Is there a way to increase the amount of s1.
Why does mine only dim all the way when I arm instead of turning off completely?! I been trying to figure it out for like... An hour. I have it setup just like you, except the SH as value. Trying to get the screen off completely when I arm, but it only dims.
Having followed this tutorial, I'm at a loss as to why my screen is still on when the dimmer knob is turned all the way down. I've calibrated. I've made sure the range of brightness is correct... Ideas anyone...?
Wow, I'd have sworn I could turn it all the way off on my boxer... Obviously wasn't paying attention! When left to its own devices the screen timeout allows the screen to go black... Your video makes it appear to go black too... Maybe I need to get my eyes checked !
I did something similar to this but on the last EdgeTX upgrade I did, the backlight stopped going to off on the lowest value. That and some other issues made me switch back to OpenTX.

Well, I think the momentary switch is a good idea. Because, if in any weird situation you need to look at your screen while armed... You have that.

Elrs devs will probably come up with eye tracking somehow with the tx modual to just turn the screen on when you look at it. I'm only like 50% joking.

Really, it's the same. All edgetx radios have almost the same functionality.
Worked out where in edge TX you can set trims to sub trims? I haven't found it yet....

On edgeTX 2.6 it will go down to only 5s. The lowest brightness is just min brightness but not OFF.

what can be the reason for s1 and s2 knobs not working even though I did exactly the same things ?
theres a problem with the knob thing heres why it makes the volume on turn on super loud...then it quiets down once the screen loads.
This is all great. But where do i get the replacement touch screen/ parts for my jumper t18 to take full advantage of edge tx?🤪

@@SmudgeFPV You know I stand corrected, it looks to be 100% dark but your right, I can see (only in bright light) a few of the white menus. When on the home screen I see nothing. I would say it's not 10% but much lower than that, maybe 3% if that. I wonder if this can be fixed in future releases although for me, I can't even see it so looks good to me LOL.
Full brightness off does not not work with EdgeTX 2.6.0 on the TX16s as other have mention in the comments.
I have a 2 month old TX16S... my Global Functions page looks different than yours... after ON and Backlight actions, it looked like you pressed the Roller switch while your cursor was on "Trainer" ?? I can't figure out the step of assigning a Value? Thanks again for your videos; they really help us FPV newbies !
After clicking the jog dial, simply flip the switch in question to auto-fill that switch as the value.
I have edgeTX 2.6.0 but cant turn off completly screen off like u can, do I need latest?

so weird for the life of me i can't get my screen to shut off it dims all the way down after setting it up with the exact settings but not off unless i set the setting to BOTH with a 5s timeout. I did notice that i can't make that 0s no matter how hard i try it only goes from 5s - 600s. but as soon as I touch a switch it turns back on
I just set this up on edge tx 2.6.0. I used S1 as you showed, but turning the knob all the way down doesn't turn the screen all the way off. I calibrated all the knobs as well as the sticks after flashing 2.6.0. Just in case I tried it with S2 and also the left slider. All give the same results, all the way down makes the screen dim but not off. Do you have any suggestions on where I may be going wrong? I'm new to FPV and your channel has been so helpful, thank you!
EdgeTX 2.6 doesn't go all the way to 0% because they don't want to risk you not being able to see the screen if you screw up the programming.
Very nice (though I'm wondering about the situation where a programming goof disables the backlight, preventing viewing the display to fix it - maybe it's still legible with the backlight off?)
It is barely visible, but if you have a flashlight, you can shine the light into the screen, and this helps enough to be able to fix your blunder :)
With 2.6 you can not switch the display on brightness to be off and the timeout for automatic off is at least 5 seconds to prevent this from happening.
@@malte9999 is this why I can't get the screen to turn off when I arm like this video? I mean, it works but it doesn't turn off completely.. Just dims when I arm. Not really useful if I can't turn the screen off completely.
I did notice once I updated to 2.6 it didn't turn off completely with the S2 knob anymore
Hey Joshua. I think I may send my TX16s to the TV show Unsolved Mysteries. For several months after going from Opentx to Edge TX, I have had a touch screen. Suddenly it's gone. Special functions has a choice "no touch". I never selected it. Why is it even a choice? I upgraded to Edgetx 2.9.3 (providence) hoping it would restore touch screen, but it didn't. Is there a way you know of to restore touch screen ?
My tx16s controller doesn't turn on when connected to the pc for sim practice. I have to disconnect it and turn in on then reconnected again, can any body give me a hand or point me in the right direction. PLEASE...??

Ok so just set mine up and it only works for half the switch if you get what I mean brightness won't go all way down to screen off will go so far then if you turn it back up again it uses half the switch to full brightness other half is dead 🥴
You could also use the 6 position switch for the second global function the first one is also '0' and selected on startup. Who uses these ugly things anyways, right ;-)
My commands work great and then stop working, any ideas?
I have made sure to follow the steps exactly(edge tx 2.7.1).. issue# 1 my radio wont allow me to select 0s for the backlight timer and issue#2 is that my radio does what yours is doing except it just dims the screen instead of shutting off. Is there anything I'm missing here?

Hello Joshua, is there as way to do this Globally if using a sticky arming switch. I place sw SD- and toggle the momentary SHup for .5sec and It activates Aux1 and moving SD to either other up or dn will disarm for quads.I use the SDdn sw as a throttle cut for my planes. Is there away to Globally work with a logical sticky ARMING for this or will this have to go into the functions for all my quads.
This has to be on a per model basis.
My tx16s won’t turn the screen off. It’ll dim to the lowest ‘dimmerM setting but won’t go completely dark 😕
They made this change in Edgetx 2.6 to prevent you locking yourself out of your radio.
Does it work on the latest opentx firmware?

This is awesome. For some reason, when I set this up, my brightness does not turn all the way off when the knob is in its low setting. Is there a reason for this? I was in EDGETX 2.6
Edgetx 2.6 won't let it go full dark to prevent accidentally setting up the logic to lock out the screen.

That is model specific. You'd need to set it up on every single model.

For some reason I can’t get it to change the switch to On. It won’t scroll down there. I’m on Edge 2.6, is there a bug?
It definitely works on 2.6. But I don't know why yours witn change to ON.

This is a change in Edgetx 2.6 to keep you from locking yourself out of your radio.

I followed everything on here. However my screen doesn't go completely off or to maximum brightness. I am using s1 rotary control. Edgetx 2.10.2. Is there a way to increase the amount of s1.
They no longer let the screen go 100% off, because it would be possible to lock yourself out of the radio by accident.

Why does mine only dim all the way when I arm instead of turning off completely?! I been trying to figure it out for like... An hour. I have it setup just like you, except the SH as value. Trying to get the screen off completely when I arm, but it only dims.
EdgeTX 2.6 and newer won't go full dark to keep you from accidentally disabling your radio screen if you mess up the settings.

Having followed this tutorial, I'm at a loss as to why my screen is still on when the dimmer knob is turned all the way down. I've calibrated. I've made sure the range of brightness is correct... Ideas anyone...?
Edgetx won't completely turn off the screen, to prevent you from accidentally locking yourself out of the radio.
Wow, I'd have sworn I could turn it all the way off on my boxer... Obviously wasn't paying attention! When left to its own devices the screen timeout allows the screen to go black... Your video makes it appear to go black too... Maybe I need to get my eyes checked !
The screen timeout always resets itself when you move a control. In theory, the special function could completely lockout the screen.
I did something similar to this but on the last EdgeTX upgrade I did, the backlight stopped going to off on the lowest value. That and some other issues made me switch back to OpenTX.
