    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Hey, I could really use your help.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
    A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    I came back to this video to practice only to realize I'd been signing "can" ( "can eat" ) wrong. Instead, I was still doing the same downward motion, but with a "C" hand. I'd usually go to the LP website to look at the dictionary, but I cannot remember the word for that specific sign. Would you mind helping me, please? Thank you.

    My favorite food is mac salad. Would macaroni/elbow noodles be spelled out or does that default to spaghetti too?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  Рік тому +7

      I would definitely spell "mac" and then do the standard sign for SALAD.
      There are those who might try to give you a hard time for using the SALAD sign with "mac" because they will say it is for "tossed green salad" type salads -- however, such a viewpoint ignores the fact that macaroni salad is also stirred around pretty vigorously during preparation. It also ignores the fact that over time formerly iconic / depictive signs often become more arbitrary.
      If someone gives you flack about using the SALAD sign for the "salad" in "mac salad," just smile, cut the person out of your will, and spell both "mac" and "salad" when you are around that person.

    Hi Dr. Bill thank you for the amazing content as always. I'm wondering if the grammar/syntax in this video is in ASL or SEE? I'm trying to learn more about how ASL grammar differs from English grammar. Thank you!!

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  9 місяців тому

      Please read this article: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/topics/subject-verb-object-asl-sentence-structure.htm
      Then read the 22 web pages linked to from here:
      www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/grammar.htm
      The biggest myth taught by ASL teachers and online (wannabe) ASL influencers is that there is a difference between the basic word/sign order of (most) sentences in ASL and English. In an unmarked sentence "The most basic word order in ASL sentences with transitive verbs is Subject-Verb-Object." That is a direct quote from the Gallaudet Press-published book: "Linguistics of American Sign Language." (3rd Edition, page 135.) Let there be no doubt in your mind whatsoever that it is okay to sign in Subject / Verb / Object order in ASL. If anyone wants to argue the topic with you, suggest they read the section on "Word Order" in that linguistics book instead of just parroting what they read online by some random poster or were told in their ASL 1 class by someone who may have never have actually studied the language they are purporting (claiming) to teach. How many random Hearing / English speakers are ready to teach an English class for pay? Yet it is common for college-level ASL programs to hire people who have never in their life had any formal training in ASL.

    Bill, is this an area sign? Both my Deaf coworker and ASL teacher/interpreter showed it to me. It's "Bored" signed with both pointer fingers pointed at/in front of the mouth and NDH ear, the pointer fingers flutter up and down while motorboat-mouth and an otherwise intense bored look, can't remember if head tilts, maybe inflection. Have you seen this? I'm familiar with the other common version as well.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  Рік тому +3

      The sign you describe is legit and widespread -- just not as common as the main sign for "bored." I'll add it to my list of signs to record and put in my dictionary.
