  • Here is the first in a series of 3 1/2 minute long Westinghouse commercials where Betty Furness shows off the entire Westinghouse line, even TV's in this spot. The magic Westy refrigerator is rubbed and Betty appears! The 1958 Laundromat and Dryer in this commercial are just beautiful.

The original front loaded washing machine. Really nice. We need a time machine to take us back to the good old days...

In fact, Desi guaranteed the president of Westinghouse that the series would sell a Pennsylvania warehouse full of their appliances by Christmas 1958 in time for management to hold a New Year's Eve dance for their employees in an EMPTY warehouse. Sure enough, after the start of 1959, Desi received a telegram: "We gave the dance".

You have to hand it to corporate America! Back then American's took everything at face value! their were no recalls, buyer protection or extended warranties, let alone the Consumer Protection agency or consumer reports! Back then a name brand sold itself, if the product was not up to par, a reputable dealer would replace the machine! Lucy and Desi were reputable personalities, I saw a documentary about there Hollywood home filmed in the 50's, they did use and stand by Westinghouse products.

"WESTINGHOUSE DESILU PLAYHOUSE" aired from 1958 through '60- and, as the sole sponsor, Westinghouse expected Desi and Lucy to sell their appliances, with Betty Furness, at the end of every episode, even in their monthly hour-long "WESTINGHOUSE LUCILLE BALL-DESI ARNAZ SHOW" {retitled "THE LUCY-DESI COMEDY HOUR" when repeats started in the summer of 1962}.

1:03- John Cameron Swayze also pitched Westinghouse products at the time.

The reason why the Laundromat did so well in the "sand test", the washer had a neutral drain.

All front loaders have neutral drains, the top loaders were solid tubs

@@michaelremillard2215 From what I remember, Kenmore and Whirlpool (and I'm sure there are one or two others in that era) also had a neutral drain.

Yes I know, but the top loaders in that " test" were sold tubs so they failed

@italobambino43 Actually there was a Consumer Reports magazine at that time, they used to review cars, TVs, radios, etc. I read an article from a C.R issue dating for the 1940s once that someone had posted, it gave performance reviews of the various makes and models of radios.

Kind of surreal when they step in and out of character...the "Desi-Lucy Fiesta of Values" - that's right, Fred! Shouldn't it be "Bill"? Or does "Fred" hang with Ricky and his doppelganger Desi? And is Lucy Ethel's friend or Desi's husband? LOL.

MUSICOM PRODUCTIONS Spot on - Ricky and Fred wouldn’t be buying all that stuff!
Boy, they love that sponsor, don’t they? Really giving all they’ve got. Westinghouse got some good value here.

And shouldn't "Ethel" be "Viv" (or "Vivian")?
