I too grow this plant three different ways and have found that my plant in a self watering pot grows the most and is the most lush. Such an adorable plant 💚

I just got my second one today from Steve’s Leaves. My first one died. Maybe I should try a self watering method. I hope it works, I love this plant.

Just got one a few weeks ago, so this video was very timely. 👍

So happy for this video. I had a nice ovata. Used some of it to mount and sell to make some money during the pandemic. Then accidentally let it dry too much and my plant died. So sad. It was one of my faves. Plan to get another when I can afford it.
    Thanks Nick!

Thank you for sharing this information today! I love this plant! Mine is growing like a weed and now I’m thinking of making a semi-hydro second plant to see if I can get it to grow a lot faster 💚😎💚 amazing plant!!!

Hi Nick! I will be looking for one of these. I would try it as a shingling plant and in passive hydro like yours. Thank you so much for sharing!

YES! This is exactly what I’ve needed. Bought some nodes a few months ago. Doing ok but some white stuff on some of the older leaves. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Thx for the video!

The white stuff might be dried sap from when it got cut, i had it too and i got scared that i had mealybugs...once i lightly scrached it went away.

@@Draculiana Thank you, I tried wiping it off and scratching it off but it looks like it was cuticle damage. I didn’t know for sure so I just plucked the leaves off (which was sad because they were the two largest ones) but oh well. It’s looking happier now that it’s outdoors

Hi Nick, good Morn to ya Sis. I love my lil Dischidia Ocala. She still juvenile, but brings me Joy. I'm going to try the passive hydro as I'd love to increase her rate of growth! Have a great week.

I love this cute little plant! It’s so easy and grows year round. It especially loves being outside for the summer. I may try propagating and growing it in leca.

Ok question with passive hydro… does the nursery pot hover in the cover pot to leave room for roots to grow into water? AKA… if the nursery pot is SITTING at the bottom a cover pot, will the excess water keep the soil too wet and cause rot?

    • @par3433

It can sit if the plant is using that much water from what I understand. Warmth + light help the water evaporate faster, and the roots develop differently in water!

When watering the large one do you water from the top or just the reservoir?

I think he made a mounting video- or so I seem to remember 😁 it’s not hard at all.

Anyone have any tips on propagating a variegated vanilla bean orchid? Or a Alocasia squid?

I think Nick has, inadvertently, created more of a self watering pot situation. Basically, the plant with soil sits above a small reservoir of water that doesn’t touch the bottom of the pot. The roots of the plant detected the moisture below and grew to reach it and ended up being very happy. I have a similar situation in which I have a plant in a real self watering pot with a wick the extends from soil to water reservoir. The plant decided that it would dip its roots into the water, as well. Hope this helps.

Btw- planterina had the same situation here-> ua-cam.com/video/HaK0axxQPrc/v-deo.html
