I know Binondo many are only part Chinese or no longer speak Chinese & the ones that do speak Hokkien. I was scared you weren't going to find a Mandarin speaker, I was so happy when you finally found one! Here in California back then in the Chinatowns not many speak Mandarin also, mostly Cantonese, but today most Chinese can speak Mandarin.

The friendship between the Filipinos and the Chinese is hundreds of years old. The best friends of the Filipinos in Asia are Chinese, South Korean, and Japanese. 🇵🇭🇨🇳🇰🇷🇯🇵
😂 what hundreds? maybe thousand years.... even before Gregorian Calendar Chinese and Filipinos nowdays have been products trading partners. Chinese introduced their best porcelain products and clothings to ancient Filipinos while Filipinos introduced pearl, golds, and decorative shells.... they did barter of products that era.
In Pangasinan province, most Chinese come from Fujian province, PROC & most of them speak Hokkien. Pangasinan was once a tributary state during the Ming dynasty in China, early 14 century, before the colonization of the Phils.
Majority of the chinese immigrants in the philippines are from fookien province in souther china so the language difference i have personnaly witnessed this back in the 70's when a bus load of tourist from taiwan came to our place in manila to visit our chinese neighbors who sell's chinese medicine they cant understand each other.
Quadlingual Mana! That's awesome you can show off your Chinese-speaking skills! I remember you were a part of Sanyuan Taiwan with Mr. 3 lol...so I know you can speak Chinese/Taiwanese quite well! Anyway, I think you missed a specialty there at Eng Bee Tin which is the hopia and their various flavors, rather than the milk tea which I know Taiwan is famous for or maybe the originators of. So many things to discover there in Binondo but I guess time is quite limited. Glad you enjoyed, Mana! Hope you can continue to explore and share your experiences of the Philippines!
Your vlogs are getting better and better. And let me comment about your new hair. It's bagay sa 'yo! You speak so well in Chinese. I can also speak in Mandarin. NI HAU MA!
Yes. I saw some of the comments already. The earlier Chinese people who came to the Philippines are Cantonese and later from Fujian. The Cantonese then went back to China specifically Hong Kong because they thought that there are great things happening in Hong Kong that time and since they speak Cantonese, it is to their advantage. So the ones left are the Chinese from Fujian which speaks Minnan. If you say you can speak Taiwanese, maybe that's the Taiwanese dialect which is very close to Hokkien. But surprisingly in this video, you were not able to converse it when you heard Hokkien which should be similar to the Taiwanese dialect. Maybe the Taiwanese language that you mean is the mandarin language which is of course same with Chinese mandarin 😁. Love your videos Manna. Where are you? Why are you not making more videos lately? Take care.

Majority of the Filipino-Chinese originated from Fujian Province and they speak Hokkien. Some do speak Mandarin especially the new arrivals from mainland China. Some also speak Cantonese, the one spoken in Hongkong. So, you better speak to them in Hokkien if you're in the Philippines.
At the smaller family restaurants, there are often families that still kept up their traditions and can also speak chinese - or hokkien more likely, because like in other Chinatowns and early immgration, most of them came from Fujian. At the big merchandise places like Eng Bee Tin, not so much. Recommendations that are also next each other: > New Po Heng Lumpia House - for their Lumpia! > Quik Snack - for Oyster Cake and Kuchay Ah (chinese empanada)
