I have been to the Chickamauga Battlefield several times on school field trips and other outings. There is a rifle in the visitor's center from one of my ancestors. I am glad you made this visit and video.

My 4x great grandfather, William Gordon died at Chickamauga. He served u der the 2nd battalion of Hilliard's legion of Alabama cavalry. He was killed by union artillery during the battle, and the legion in which he served was so badly bloodied that they were disbanded after the battle and merged with another regiment. I was lucky enough to see a reenactment at the Chickamauga battlefield on one of the anniversaries.
I'm really excited for this one. I used to live very near this battlefield for nearly 20 years. I have been there hundreds of times if not thousands. An absolutely beautiful place with some amazing history.
In 1998, while visiting this battlefield, I and some friends, all ACW reenactors, just by chance, had the privilege of meeting Edwin Bearss, historian used in Ken Burns' "The Civil War." He stopped whatever he was doing there and we had a great chat with him. He passed away less than a year ago.
Chickamauga Battlefield benefitted from being in control of the War Department. And was mainly used to train troops at least until WW1. Not a lot of development nearby until after transfer to the NPS.
Wow I live 5 minutes from there and run through the park every week. It was really cool to see you in places I visit often. I enjoyed your knowledge of the battle I never knew

Unfortunately in school we mostly went over WW2 and it wasn't much different each year so a lot hasn't really stuck in my mind. I have learnt pretty much everything I know from you and your reaction videos.
If you can swing it I would highly recommend visiting Savannah. I know it's a long distance from Toccoa but there's a lot of history in the area. From forts to historic buildings

I finally got to see Shiloh Battlefield this year. 💥🇺🇸💥 It seemed to be larger than Chicamauga and better interpreted than Gettysburg.

It's really cool that you were where Breckenridge's Division was because I have two direct ancestors that fought under him, both in Stovall's Brigade.

I discovered Ken Burns' documentary series, The Civil War about 2 years ago. I purchased his DVD series of the war. Well done documentary. Since then, I have become almost obsessed with any UA-cam video about the Civil War. I also became interested in the history of other wars in world history. I love your channel! Your knowledge of the CW is impressive!!

One of the most well preserved battlefields is called Picketts Mill, which is just a few minutes from where I live. I also live on the battlefield of the Battle of New Hope, as I’ve mentioned in previous comments on your other videos. You actually inspired me to do a lot more research into this battle and visit the historical sites with more context.
I hope you had a nice visit in Georgia and I hope my home state treated you well!
Visited Chickamauga a couple of years ago,and did a ranger lead tour and it was excellent! Then drove around and stumbled on the Cleburne statue in Ringgold.
I went here in 2021 as well just a few months after he did and I have to say I put this right up there with Shiloh as must see battlefields but this place is so well marked and preserved it is just amazing definitely recommend it.
This video was great, don’t feel rushed to make a video on the Napoleonic wars despite all the demands, take your time and relax if you need to, I understand the stress that comes from this sort of thing.
My family went on a civil war battlefield road trip a few years ago, and Chickamauga was my favorite stop.
One of the places as someone from NE Alabama that I wished I would have visited before I moved out west. Happy to be able to see it from the lens of someone who loves history.
This, Shiloh, and Bull Run are the only major Civil War battlefields I haven't visit. Awesome video.
I believe the landscape was quite different during war time. The fields in some cases were much larger. Also, it was said the artillery mowed down trees into a mess.

This battle illustrated just how split many families were in the war. What i didn't realize until studying this battle was how high that actually went. BG Benjamin Helm, commander of the confederate Orphan Brigade, who was killed at Chickamauga was President Abraham Lincoln's brother-in-law.

Snodgrass Hill might have been easy to defend, but Thomas did it with the shattered remains of the Army of the Cumberland. It was Thomas and this same Army that took Missionary Ridge at Chattanooga and drove the rebels out of this theatre.
Not to rest on his laurels, Thomas then destroyed this Confederate Army at Nashville.
Grant did like Thomas because he was slow. While there is truth to this, Thomas was always very well prepared and didn’t make mistakes.

My great great grandfather was in this battle and so was his younger brother. They were in Co D 50th Tennessee Infantry CSA. His brother was killed. I also had another great great grandfather that fought in this battle. He was in Co D 34th Alabama Infantry
This is one of those battles where a culmination of seemingly unrelated little things add up to cost the Union dearly. Gen Wood had been ripped publicly by Gen Rosencrans multple times, so in spite of knowing that his unit was tied in with the units on both of his flanks...he moved knowingly creating a gap in the line. On the Confederate side (directly across from that gap), Gen Longstreet was one of the later units to get in place and found he didn't have sufficient room in the line for his normal width, so opted to employ units in depth. His subsequent attack, split Rosecrans' line and quickly began rolling up both flanks of the gap putting 2 of the Union corps to a route.
"Do or do not. There is no try. Only do." And you did.
You should visit Point Park on Lookout Mountain and while there walk the path up and down around the mountain. See what it would have been like for both sides in the Battle Above the Clouds.
I went to Point Park the morning of the 2nd day but it was closed so I didn't get to visit.

The Civil War reenacting group I’m in, the 21st Michigan, was part of the division that was moved and created that hole. Also company B of the 21st was with Thomas helping to defend Snoddgrass Hill
Visit to this battlefield is on my "bucket list". Hope to make it there in the Fall of 2022 fingers crossed. Figured you would give me a head start. Thanks for great content.

My ancestor was with the 4th Ky. US and wounded in the face at Chickamauga. Believed to be mortal but recovered and returned to the regiment in January. Later captured and sent to Andersonville with his brother. Survived the war but perished on The Sultana.
My ancestor Captain Benton Strang, Company B, 39th North Carolina, was Killed here. Great Video!

On your way back north you should make a stop in Knoxville (my hometown) and see Fort Sanders area. Unfortunately the only significant thing for it are a series of monuments in a residential area named after the fort. It's a pretty minor battle in the grand scheme of things but if it's on your way, it'll take an hour tops to see it all. Plus, we have tons of great restaurants in our old city that I could recommend...
That was a brutal battle. It's memory alone remains was a documentary made by University of Tennessee. It's phenomenal in its detail.
just passed the crest of Snodgrass hill, Thomas made his stand, ordered his men to lay down, rose fire, and drop back down to reload, in rows.
There's was justa few seconds in between well aimed full volleys point blank in order to stop the mass confederates.
The death and carnage it took to do so is unimaginable.
Coincidentally, Snodgrass describes a place on south western Scotland.
Meaning : "Smooth Grass. " 😅🤓
Recently starting watching your channel, and I do enjoy it. However, how did you come to our state and not visit my town, Frankin TN. We had kind of an important battle here (half of the war ended here). And the details of the battle are amazing. So, if y'all ever head down this way again. You might want to stop by.
Since you flew out of Pittsburgh, do you live near there? If so, have you ever come down here to the Fort Necessity Battlefield and the nearby site of the skirmish at Jumonville Glenn (which is where the French and Indian/7 Years War began for those that don’t know)
Georgia hot is a different beast than Indiana and Ohio hot. You feel like you need deodorant sticks mounted under your pits and it smothers you if you arent used to humid heat. I put the crane systems in the Nissin Brake plant as you come into Rock Springs and after that went to Phoenix to put a couple systems into an AZZ galvanizing plant. I prefer the dry heat to the wet kind but there is just something about getting up on the point and going through the battle tour and seeing what they were dealing with as well as just how many different spots the fighting broke out that makes you forget all about the heat and appreciate what it must have been like for they people that lived and fought there. And can we recognize how small some of those cabins that housed entire families were.
Any plans to visit Kennesaw Battlefield or any sites around Atlanta. I actually live in the Marietta, GA area and as you already know this whole area around Atlanta metro has so much Civil War history due to the Atlanta Campaign. I think it would make for good video coverage.
It was a skirmish battle during The American Civil War. I have played enough games and this battlefield not a joke.

Great channel and very very interesting content. I do have a question. Isn't Antietam was the bloodiest battle of the civil war and not Gettysburg?
Antietam was the bloodiest single day. In terms of battle casualties I believe it's 5th. Gettysburg had more than twice the casualties of Antietam but lasted 3 days.

Rosecrans was considered as a possible running mate for Lincoln in 1864. So much so that the head of the Ohio Delegation, James Garfield, personally telegraphed Rosecrans asking him if he was interested. Rosecrans responded positively but the return telegram never made it back to Garfield and so Andrew Johnson was selected instead.
Obviously, had he been made VP he would have become president because of what happened to Lincoln. I wish this would have happened because he couldn't have been worse than Andrew Johnson was.
Rosecrans would have also been the first Catholic president.

War weariness does that to people. 2 years of The Civil War took a toll on everyone.

Was the battle close range, from the look of the terain it would seem like it would have been, are the cannons mostly made of copper, a light plate of copper around them or are they painted green? I thought most cannon were made out of iron or a grade of steel.

In modern war we have radios they didn't and a lot of noise cannons, muskits,men yelling etc etc

My Great Great Great Great Great Uncle Gilbert Vail was captured at the battle of Chickamauga. He was held prisoner at Andersonville and died there from diarrhea (dysentery).
