My only regret was that this wasn’t include on “Touch”, I feel like it would have made a great closer had it been. One of the best covers. I can’t believe there are comments saying this is bad??!
First song I ever heard by her. Heard it on the Towson State University radio station back in 89 or so. Guy on the radio said I should remember her name. I agreed and then she reappeared in 1992 with "Into the Fire".
I cannot be sure. All I know is that I was handed the CD over from a head honcho over at Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA). I believe the year was 1992.
Nice live recording. Yeah, that's Sarah alright. Nobody else has a coloratura soprano quite like hers. She's growling a bit in the lower registers, rocking out. It must have been fun for her to break down the expectations for a while.
@@thedanantenna you're right - that tasty fretless up high does kick in there. I guess I just meant the "lower" part at 1:50 when the groove gets going.
JackandPetey are right, this song is about when Peter left Genesis, he went to Solsbury hill to think and he had a spiritual feeling..."friends would think i'm a nut" as he was about to leave Genesis
I love listening to covers of great songs -- I go on "binges" just listening to the same song over and over again. Mini-review: Not as good as Peter Gabriel, but he sets a high bar, and even at this young age, she was better than a lot of the other covers I heard, and there were some nice moments too. I wonder if she ever covered this song again, perhaps in the studio?
You know what I mean? Back then all the singers were forced to imitate that "fowl" sound. Poor Sarah could do it with the best of them. She was true to herself in the end, and she made it cool to sound tender and beautiful again, took up the threads of Joan Baez and Judy Collins.
It does sound like Natalie Merchant. Back then all the female singers were supposed to make these shouty, rooster-crowing noises of Natalie Merchant . It was supposed to sound cool and "organic". I hated having to cover those kinds of songs...Zombie by the Cranberries.. You can hear Sarah doing it at the end. So glad Sarah ended giving us her real voice in her later career to show the world that making chicken noises isn't what singing is about.
I don't think it sounds like her either, other than a few recognizable inflections here and there. I hear none of the richness of her voice in this song
Sarah is, generally speaking, very good, but this rendition is cheap. Every artist, including big artist, should avoid to cover a song like Solsbury Hill. Or, if they really want to, just do a version far from the original.
tbwatch88 It is dreadful. I expected more from Sarah McLachlan. She can do much better than this. It's not one of her finest moments. Listen to this, then listen to "In The Arms Of An Angel". It's hard to believe it's the same woman singing both songs.
This is so bad! It sounds like a bad Vegas lounge act! She should stick to her lesbian inspired music it suits her voice! I like Sarah this is a song way out of her vocal range
My only regret was that this wasn’t include on “Touch”, I feel like it would have made a great closer had it been. One of the best covers. I can’t believe there are comments saying this is bad??!
Normally I would never listen to someone covering Peter Gabriel, but since it was Sarah McLachlan I was intrigued enough to give it a listen.
Lovely, lovely cover. She's got a great voice

Cool! I am here in Baltimore. I first heard it when Upper Management at CMS, HCFA at the time provided me with this single CD. I was astonished!
I've heard this song a thousand times. I just got full body goose bumps as if it was the first time. I even have goosebumps on my scalp.
Sarah comes so close to owning this Peter Gabriel classic!
I was a college radio DJ when she released this. One of my favorite versions of this song.
My heart went boom boom boom
I only just discovered she covered this song. I can die now
I only just discovered she covered this song. I can die now
Bella cover...brava Sarah.
Best female version, love it, thank you Sarah
My favorite version is this song. Love Sarah!!!!
Happy Air-Shaping Anniversary Sarah McLachlan [28 January birthday]
Well done cover. Great musicians
Two of my favorite artists! Sarah paying homage to the master.
What a great cover. Lovely voice.
she was 19 when she sang this people......sounds great to me
I'll give her a pass cause she was that young when it was done...
No. She was 21, not 19. This was 1989. She was born in 1968.
I cannot be sure. All I know is that I was handed the CD over from a head honcho over at Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA). I believe the year was 1992.

When the bass guitar kicks in at 1:50 is a goosebump moment for me. Such a great underrated cover of a classic.
the bass guitar kicks in at 00:24

thank you sarah....made my heart go boom boom boom...sincerely
A nice version of one of my favorite songs!
Live at the Town Pump. Vancouver, BC. 1989. Recorded by Tom Ferris of MOEV in a truck in the back alley.
I wondered about when and where it was recorded.
love that version !
Hermosa versión!!, me encanta su voz!!!
Nice very nice Sarah! Great Voice!
Surprisingly good. Very good. Thanks for sharing.
JackandPetey are right, this song is about when Peter left Genesis, he went to Solsbury hill to think and he had a spiritual feeling..."friends would think i'm a nut" as he was about to leave Genesis
Beautifully sung by Sarah
Wonderful indeed
Wonderful voice
great tune.very upbeat.sweet voice......
charming.
The smile on my face...
This one really rocks

Great comment!
what is your favorite cover of this song? i just found it and am obsessed haha
@@baseball8z It's this one. I've heard other decent covers of this song, but I love this one and the original.
Great cover😍😍
I heard this on the radio the other day. Didn't know it was her
Her "Vox" voice era. Incredible. My hears tell me she made a slight adjustment at Solace. A master musician who I consider the Queen of the EMO
Vox-my absolute favorite song of all time!
Thanks!
Very nice cover!
I can't listen to her music without thinking of suffering animals...
awesome

Big Peter G fan as well here
Great sound quality for a live recording.
This was recording from a live show done early in her career. Probably just having fun trying the song on.
... after having too much to drink. She's sounds like she's drunk.
Best female version, excellent!
Wow. Different. I like it. Obviously, prefer the original but this is great too.
Well I'm waiting
Good job
Peter loves...u

Not an easy song to cover but she does a good job.
Boom boom boom
Liverpool! We won it 6 times.
Crap sometimes it just doesn't work
Great bassline though
Good :---}
@xwingt65 check out jodi martin . she does this and in your eyes, both fantastic versions of pg songs
leave it to the pro sarah
Boom boom b...
Not as strong as Peter Gabriel, but still beautiful...
José Fonseca May not be as strong as Peters because as a rule a woman’s voice is not as forceful ! She does a wonderful job
1989
What year was this released?
This version, 1989. Peter Gabriel's original version was in 1977.
This is great but Peter Gabriel’s is iconic
is it not supposed to be salisbury hill? as in the place in england?
Solsbury, not Salisbury...........it's near the city of Bath in England. PG has a studio near there.
Not many people can even dream of attempting this song as it is IMO one of the best songs written.
Not a great cover to be honest, opinions vary.
love it, but can Sarah really do anything bad ? i think not !!!
wonder what she thinks about this rendition
Last time I checked this was Peter Gabriel’s song not whoever this is
@BriscoCountyJr23 listen to jodi martin. she does 2 pg songs. both are EXCELLENT!
Not originally done by Peter Gabriel
can't compeed with the original!!!!
do you think she knew this song was about he dropped acid and thought he was jesus
no
There's no way that's Sarah.... right? Doesn't even sound like her. o_O
I don't think it sounds like her either, other than a few recognizable inflections here and there. I hear none of the richness of her voice in this song
It is!! A very YOUNG Sarah.
sounds awflu compares to peter gabriel but it definatley beats all of the other crap out there in the world
Sarah is, generally speaking, very good, but this rendition is cheap. Every artist, including big artist, should avoid to cover a song like Solsbury Hill. Or, if they really want to, just do a version far from the original.
Sounds more like a timid Natalie Merchant than it does Sarah McLachlan.
Not great,not terrible either...
Umm... this hardly even sounds like Sarah McLachlan....
just......no
Rubbish as well
dreadful.

You clowns realize this is live, right?
She sounds drunk, slurring her words.
Yuck... Idk maybe it's just because I clicked this RIGHT after listening to Peter Gabriel's version, but I REALLY don't like this version.
It's not that great. :/
This is so bad! It sounds like a bad Vegas lounge act! She should stick to her lesbian inspired music it suits her voice! I like Sarah this is a song way out of her vocal range
So awful - check the original!
Uhhhh no.... just no.
Sarah is ok but she lacks stenght in this performence. This a song for a stronger voice, a man's voice.
Whiney...Know your limitations
Holy shit that sucked
This is the worst rendition of this great song I’ve heard.
Butchered.
This is really NOT good. She should have stayed away from this. Mr. Gabriel is probably unhappy. :)
